Nevertheless, it's still quite valuable and I doubt it will be much lower in the near future.

Two of those were in a ~30โ‚ฌ bundle, I just thought it's worth mentioning.
Otherwise one monthly, one "proper" bundle

Granted, but the latest one was $10, and albeit a long time ago, we may still expect it to get bundled again.

It hasn't been bundled in 3 years almost to the day and it goes on sale at this discount only once a year on the anniversary of the release so tbh, it's a must-buy if you're interested in the game. It is unlikely to be cheaper in the foreseeable future and it's unlikely to be in a cheap bundle.

As someone who usually only buys games at 75% off or more, Stardew is a game more than worth the $5 (and full price tbh).
I have at least 200h+ in it and there are so many mods that add extra life to it.

Have never seen it dip below 50% off.

Do you maybe have some advice or tips for somebody who likes the cute pixel graphics and many of the things I've heard you can do later in game but had problems warming up to the game the first time they tried?

It's already been a few years and apparently I've only played 5 hours so far (I thought maybe 12 or at least 8) so sorry if my description of my experience with Stardew Valley is gonna be a bit vague ๐Ÿ˜…

So my first problem was you start out with very little money so you can't really come out of the gate and start hardcore farming because all I could afford was 4 seeds. So I think I cleared a little bit of land on my farm and planted those but because they took a few days to mature and there was little to do on my farm I spent most of time fishing. Fishing gave me a little bit of extra coin and I think I did 1 - 3 harvests of my first plant type and managed to get up to 6 seeds but it all felt kind of painfully slow ๐Ÿ˜• And since there was not much to do on my farm I decided to explore the village and befriend the townfolk. I had read that you can befriend NPC if you give them the right gifts. So I made my round through the village every day but each NPC would only talk to me for 1 sentence per day and those conversations didn't give me the slightest hint what kind of gifts they might like.

I know 5 hours is not a lot of time to give a game before you put it to the side and maybe it's just a typic case of Apprentice years are not master years Does this idiom exist in english? If not I suppose it would roughly translate to "You have to dig through a lot of shit if you want nice roses." but maybe you could give me some hints about where I went wrong.

I really want to like this game. I've spent at least 100 hours in Starbound tending to my farm alone - and cooking and trying to figure out new recipes and I'm generally extremely into what my friends would call grind-heavy games like Terraria, Starbound, GTA Online or ARK: Survival Evolved.

I also found a very professional looking guide by somebody called Redlace and skimmed through it but I think that was a couple months after I played it and at that point my initial motivation had already been a bit hampered with.

Perhaps when you played, it wasn't the right mood? I love grindy games but starting them at the wrong mood is gonna make them not fun, right. I think it takes the first year to get everything up and running. It's a bit faster in multiplayer. And I suppose what most people do in the downtime is mining, which you didn't mention, so that's interesting? Because you have limited energy in the start, so mining is a profitable way to spend your energy and it's pretty fast too.
You can get more hints about gifts in the befriending cutscenes, I think (you get points for completing tasks for them or just by talking). Or just try to give them whatever you think they'll enjoy.

Just take it slow and create goals to unlock the next thing that will help you grow your farm! I also really love Terraria and I feel they both give a similar sense of discovery and progress :)

The wiki for this game is amazing! Specifically which crops are best to invest in, gifts to give the villagers, and when certain fish, forage and crops are available! There are things called Secret Notes unlocked in the beginning of Winter which give you hints to some of these things as well (such as which gifts villagers like)

To begin with, fishing is nice but people usually don't rely on it for too long when they can start growing more crops. Foraging around the map is good, going to the mines, and collecting wood (not for money though, you will need a lot to build/craft things)

The Forest Farm is recommended, it's the prettiest too imo! You have to work on the Community Center over time to unlock some special stuff :) The mines are a very important part of the game, along with the crops you grow.

Yeah, game wikis can be really helpful but I've already played several "wiki games" (very complex games that almost mandatorily require a wiki to figure stuff out) like Project Zomboid or ARK: Survival Evolved and it gets a bit stale and interupts the immersion. I'm not saying that's the case in this game since I obviously haven't played it enough to have an educated opinion but I think games shouldn't rely on wikis too much but instead offer a certain degree of accessability.

The other reason why I'd rather not use a wiki too much is that I've heard this game has Shenmue style timed events like "find me sitting under the big oak tree on November 14th" and I'm a bit of an obsessive person...
So once I start looking up stuff there's a decent chance I'll look everything up to find them all.

I started this game recently (encouraged by "Play or Pay" group), in January. Had more or less the same feeling as you -- growing too slow, felt a bit "directionless"... I was so afraid of wasting my few resources, I ended up looking up a few wikis to see what gifts people liked, and it annoyed me -- same as you, I think consulting a wiki really gets me out of the game. So I left the game aside for a while, and retried last week.

So, after some 7 or 10 game days, I think I started to understand and enjoy the game systems, and quests gave me just enough direction to keep me going. I just finished my first spring, and though I still have very limited resources, I am enjoying everything a lot more (and I no longer look up the wiki, want to figure out the rest on my own).

So, if you are like me, you might warm up to it with time. If you want a few hints about the start, here they are (I might be wrong about these, though, just starting the game!):

Foraging: it might be a good source of things to gift and sell. It seems most people like flowers as a gift so far. Most.

Surviving by Farming?: I guess it is not that essential... I did plant all seeds I found, and I bought a few more to keep going, but I seem to survive on other activities just as well. I feel the game gives you options so you can pick what you like... But I could be wrong, let us see how my first winter goes... :D

Birthdays: you probably noticed, there is a calendar at the main store with all big events and birthdays. So far I made a point of giving each person at least a little something on their birthday, and my social skills have been slowly increasing with them.

Side quests: check the board at the main store too.

TV: watching TV every morning seems to be quite "free", and you get a recipe every week if you do so. I have not used any of them yet, since my house still does not have a kitchen, but I guess it is a good idea to watch every day.

Storage I: I invested a lot of money to get a backpack as soon as I could. I feel it was a very good investment.

Storage II: I also crafted a chest, then recently a second one. Also feel essential to me so I can organize my stuff.

People which are experts might be laughing at my errors here, but I will learn it slowly. I will probably play a lot until I get satisfied, and then LATER look up these "special timed events" for completeness sake.

Cheers!

Thank you for sharing your experience that you had similar problems with the game at first but managed to warm up to it eventually ๐Ÿ˜„

It's an odd feeling trying out this thing everybody loves and in theory checks all your boxes and finding out it's quite different from what you expected.

I won't be able to give it another shot right away because I'm currently catching up with the latest 2 story updates in GTA Online but I'll keep your tips in mind when I try again.

  • The game is VERY slow for the first 7 days till you unlock stuff. You can either sleep in bed to end the day early (skipping those slow days) or do fishing.

  • Stardew in general is slow-paced but rewards your patience (its so nice to see the fruits of your labour). If you're not someone who likes delayed gratification, then I'm unsure if you'll enjoy the game as much as others who do.

  • For gifts, most people either use the wiki or a villager gifts mod. Personally I use the wiki, but I started to learn all the neutral/universally liked gifts and one of two fave things each character liked over time.

  • Community mods may help. I know there's Stardew Expanded if you want more people to talk to / deeper conversations, but I haven't done that yet.

  • Give yourself things to do. The game is relatively open-ended with a basic "story", so having goals like "I want to upgrade my tools" or "I want to decorate my farm" etc helps.

Forgot to add that you can also Play with your Friends!
Sometimes having that extra person just makes it more interesting.

Thanks for your advice ๐Ÿ˜‰ Maybe I was just still in a different mindset like from Fallout 2, thinking my character will die of old age if I don't get things going.

If you're not someone who likes delayed gratification, then I'm unsure if you'll enjoy the game as much as others who do.

Granted that was several years ago but in GTA Online I've grinded for 8 - 10 weeks, 2+ hours a day, 4 or 5 days a week to get high end gear like the Gunrunning bunker or the Opressor Mk 2 (also referred to as noob bike ๐Ÿ˜… as I learned from my little nephew who wasn't even old enough to to play that game at that point - because it used to be soo ridiculously overpowered) so that probably won't be a problem. First normal Contact missions and then I got really into gunrunning which financed most of my other gear and playthings ๐Ÿ˜„

Just to be safe: It's impossible to overlook what I unlock after 1 week has passed, right? Knowing the first week is supposed to be so slow will probably help me deal with it better. I think I was just expecting there would be more farming in a farming simulator and was annoyed nobody would talk to me.

I mean taking care of 4 plants can be fun as well but that's the exact number of kitchen herbs I have on my window-sill 2x rosemary, thyme & chives so in a game I was hoping for a bit larger scale like I had seen on the screenshots from later in game.

I won't be able to give it another shot right away because I'm currently catching up with the latest 2 story campaigns in GTA Online and I'm writing a review / guide for Despotism 3k but I'll make sure to try again soon and have bookmarked this thread so I can re-read all those tips.

Sadly my real life buddies would NEVER play a game like that which requires you to make your own story with me.

They quit ARK: Survival Evolved after only 30 minutes because the game doesn't explain every tiny detail to you and also "Where are the cutscenes?" ๐Ÿ˜…

They are used to stuff like Assassin's Creed and Borderlands.

There are some crops that give you insane amount of money. I don't want to spoil too much though. But even when you buy any crop in big numbers it'll give you a nice income. Some crops are profitable because you get a lot of money from them, some are profitable because you can harvest them every 6 days. So it's the way to start earning at the beginning of the game.

Fishing, honey and animals are also a great way of income once you'll get them. There are different types of honey depending on a type of flower growing near a bee hive.

I liked to check TV every morning to plan my daily routine. For example I was going to caves when fortune teller told the day os lucky and spent time on farm when it was unlucky. There is also a guide on how to play the game in the game. You can learn a lot from TV programme and in library (once you'll find old books).

There are some universally liked gifts for example flowers. You can get some free flowers by foraging. Then you'll find notes on villagers with their favorite things. Some villagers talk about other villagers (and what they like). You can learn about some villagers favourite things by searching their houses.

And this is just a tip of the iceberg of what this game has to offer. I have like 200 hours and I haven't seen everything yet.

If it's something you're not that interested in, fair enough. But 4.99 is very reasonable. It's sale price in Europe is โ‚ฌ6.99.

Already own it on a couple platforms, but would have jumped at getting it for $5.

This is my favourite game!

The non-sale price for this game is already amazing considering the hundreds of hours of content, thousands of mods that can add even more to that (new areas, npcs, items, crops, weapons, buildings, recolours to the whole map)

The entire game was made by just one person who has put out countless updates, fixed any bug he can find, and obviously really loves his game :) He could easily never put it on sale and still have no trouble selling it :D The price is insanely good for how loved and special it is

literal 7 days? Cos I played the game for 5 hours before I threw in the towel. If I have to play 25-35 hours before the game really kicks in, it's unlikely I'm going back to retrying it. I played over 250hrs in My Time at Portia, but there was never any crazy-ass slow grind to the game.

7 in game days, one in game day is 20min real time.
So if you played for 5h its probably too "slow paced" to your liking and that's fine.
At least you gave it a go.

Its because it was made by one person originally, lack of new farming sim/life sim games at the time, low price for the time you can get playing it, community modding supported (and it adds a lot of life after your og no mod run), updates coming out years after the game could be considered complete. Community is also very nice in general.

Ie Cozy farming game with a good one-person developer.

I get that if you don't like delayed gratification, you may not like this game.

Interestingly it's a historical low price, which was only matched once on Steam... last year for 24h on the game release date anniversary too.
So if you're interested, you should grab it or be prepared to wait another year for the same discount
