Hey guys!

I have been having a pretty boring time lately as I've been taken out from active duty and assigned a project to work on.

Just starting a thread for some of you guys who may have any interest in aviation, particularly in Air Traffic Control. If you have any related questions then feel free to ask! You can also share any of your favorite aircraft pics or aircraft livery pics.

Mandatory giveaway: Another World

Have fun!

Also for those interested here's some Live ATC Broadcast from where I work.

I haven't a clue when it comes to planes (passenger planes all look the same to me), but here's a bump.

No worries! They all look the same to most of my colleagues as well (the folks that work at the radar).

Thank you for your giveaway N3ov! :3

I like to play military sims ranging from the golden years of simming to DCS and Rise of Flight.

My favorite plane is the IAI Kfir, the last of the deltas. ^^

I have never played much of any flight sims but I have played Ace Combat series quite a bit back in the days!

And you like a very old aircraft!

Did you know the USN and USMC used those as aggressor aircraft and named them F-21.

Old aircraft because I'm not of the youngest myself anymore and I'm old school.

Never knew about this piece of information! I thought they were solely flown by Israel!

Different versions of the Kfir are/were also sold to and flown by Ecuador, Colombia and Sri Lanka

I love flying on the A321 (as a passenger ofc), but A320 is close enough as an answer I guess :)

What is yours?

And thank you for the GA :)

A321 is a variant of A320, just like A319.

I really like the dreamliner! There's something about the wings... the way they sweep upwards!

And also because it's quite rare at our aerodrome.

I know, I just prefer the A321 version because its bigger and on the route I usually fly you can get away with having no one sitting the the same row in the back :D

What is it the most common? It is there any that you cannot stand?

Well these days B777, B787 and A330s are very common for longhaul flights.

And I cannot stand A320s and A330s. They simply can't maintain a good rate-of-climb beyond 25000 feet.

How do actual air traffic controllers feel about the movie Pushing Tin?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It is a pretty accurate movie although not many controllers speak as fast as they do in the movie. I have however noticed that American controllers tend to speak a little faster than others from around the world.

That last scene where they stand behind a 747 is total BS though :D

That's actually cool to know. I thought about becoming an air traffic controller for a while, partly because of that movie. In the end it's way too much responsibility for me though, and the curriculum for the school I checked out had lessons on technical stuff about planes, didn't realize that was needed, not sure I could've sat through that (and I didn't score that well in a pre-test I did anyways - spatial thinking, meh)
So yeah, lots of respect for that job :)

Regarding the entry test, there are pretty basic questions regarding aircraft operation. And there is at least one question regarding control surfaces of the aircraft.

The job does require extreme awareness and concentration at all times. There are times with lean traffic or peak traffic but you always have to keep yourself aware and plan ahead of the traffic.

Do you ever feel like you're the grown-up version of a kid playing with toy planes, but you're actually messing around with the real thing?

Yeah sometimes we do relax and get that feeling while the traffic is not much overwhelming. But we are mostly kept on toes!

I'm not familiar with atc, so here a noob question...
Is it more related to math, or logic, or organization skill..?

It's a mix of everything!

You get the estimates of airplanes coming from multiple directions, flying different routes, that maybe converging onto a same point at same level. You are supposed to separate the aircraft and prevent them from colliding (or avoid situation where there may exist a risk of collision) You will have to be aware of the route structure, conflict points, time that an aircraft may take to fly a certain route given the speed of the aircraft etc. You take a glance at all the information that keeps coming to you and you will not only have to find the conflicting traffic, but also devise a plan to resolve the confliction and execute it! This job requires all of the skills that you have mentioned at the same time!

We had that once on our aerodrome. I think it made a technical stop.
We have the AN-124 once every year though.
