Hi Steamgifts!

I've got a big list of games I haven't completed yet. So starting in October I'm going to try and finish at least one game I haven't played/completed. (Completed being finished the main storyline)

I've made a poll, but feel free to comment down below. It's not complete by any means, but it's what I'm gonna start with.

I played all of them. Metro 2033 and Dishonored first of all I think!
Far Cry 3 wasn't so good as I expected.
Mass Effect and Spec Ops are great games, but they pretty old for now.
Talos Principle - not bad if you like puzzles, but sometimes boring.

Nice games on the poll. I'm sure you'll have fun no matter which you choose.

My order of preference:
1 - Talos Principle - a great first person puzzle game with wonderful worldbuilding and narration. I loved it.
2 - Mass Effect - the first game of one of the best series out there. Sci-fi action/exploration RPG. Can be kind of repetitive and isn't as polished as the following games but I really enjoyed it.
3 - Spec Ops: The Line - mindless shooter with a great thought provoking story... quite a cognitive dissonance.
4 - Metro 2033 - Good FPS game with a good story and a great setup
5 - Dishonored - Although it is a good game, something just didn't click for me and I just stopped playing
6 - FarCry 3 - Never played it but after not enjoying the first 2 games in the series, I decided this was not for me. I also tend to dislike the big Ubisoft series.

Good luck :)

Hmmm, very hard desicion, I know your problem very well. So much games, so less time. In your case I think you should play Mass Effect or Dishonored. No matter how you decide don't forget the most importend thing of all:

Have fun while playing!!! 🎮 😁

The Talos Principle definitely, extraordinary puzzle game. Road to Gehenna dlc is also one of the rare ones these days that has more than enough content to justify its price.

Dishonored and then the Talos Principle but i cant vote two things XD. After that go for Mass Effect (i haven't played it yet but i know its good)
I really dont care about open world style games cause too much world gives too much grinding...

Far Cry 3 is a pretty good game, it also is a Uplay game so that means no pesky steam achievements to force you to play the game longer than YOU want to. Spec-Ops: The Line isnt too long of a game if you'd like a mindless "Shooter" with a very good story which really reflects the whole "horrors of wars" theme.

Dishonored is a bit longer game which is freaking great, great story, gameplay, action and stealth, and choices the player can make. I would definitely choose dishonored if you have more time and can accept the stealth genre, it's one of only a few games I fully intend to "100%" once time allows.

Sadly Dishonored has challenge maps.
And that is a feature I hate in storydriven singleplayergames and it's discouraging me even to go 100% in campaign achievements because I'd never do the challenge ones so can't get 100% anyway...^^

I find some challenge maps to be alright, at least the ones that aren't tedious. The combat in Dishonored is very fluid so the challenge is more based on combat mastery in the game, which can be give or take.I enjoy it more in the stealth aspect but my next play of ti I planned on going for high chaos, since my first run was a perfect and challenging "Ghost," "Low Chaos," and "Clean Hands" run.

Everything but the Dunwall City Trials cheevos are fun to get D: then there are just too many combat-challenges in a game that's main focus wasn't the combat

Dishonored - Since I just started playing it myself. I'm going magic and stealth. Lots of fun so far.
The Talos Principle - great puzzler. Played most of it. Need to go back and finish it off.

The Mass Effect Trilogy is my favorite RPG of all time, and the first game is a really good game on its own (although slightly outdated but still perfectly functional)

If you want good gameplay play Dishonored or FC3. If you want good story play Mass Effect/Metro 2033/Spec Ops: The Line. Really there's not a single bad game on your list so it might as well not even matter in which order you go about playing them.

I know that I played most of them (all but, The Talos Principle).
And I will put them in this order from best to great.

  1. Dishonored
  2. Spec Ops: The Line
  3. Far Cry 3
  4. Metro 2033

I didn't play The Talos Principle.
And I didn't like Mass Effect at all.

According to How Long To Beat, you can expect to take about the following amount of time to beat each of these games:

Game Main Story
Dishonored 12 hours
Far Cry 3 15.5 hours
Mass Effect 17 hours
Metro 2033 9.5 hours
Spec Ops 6 hours
The Talos Principle 16 hours

Note that Mass Effect, being more of an RPG, has a greater number of side quests/distractions, which are more likely to stretch out the time to completion. These are just estimates, and I know I tend to take longer (maybe by 50%). Of course, if you're not enjoying a game, you may not finish it at all, so my recommendation is to take the time estimates with a grain of salt and be willing to change horses midstream, if it comes to that.

Given that you're open to all of them and are asking advice, I'll take it that you want to play all of them eventually, so "play the one you'll enjoy" is not too helpful However, based on your history of playing military shooters, the shortness of time to your goal of finishing a game, and having just an hour into it (where you probably won't have hit some key plot points), I think I'd recommend Spec Ops: the Line. If the gameplay was off-putting to you, I don't think that changes too much, but if it's on the list, you're obviously willing to give it another try. If all other things are equal, it's the most direct route to your goal of completing a game.

The Talos Principle will seem to go quick, if you're into it (and is the only one on the list I've completed, via Steam Family Sharing). Dishonored is one I tried briefly, hen set aside, and played for hours later. I'm not sure why I didn't take to it as much at first, as the art style and gameplay (FPS stealth + somewhat Bioshock-like gameplay) seem like they'd be a good fit for me. While I haven't completed it yet, it's fairly high on my list, especially with a sequel available.

Personally, I found Mass Effect disappointing. It's not so much the game's fault as the hype surrounding it, with many people having held it up as their favorite, and someone praising it for being hard science fiction (less than an hour in, I was shotgunning neon zombies; it'sl an interesting setting, just not what I was led to believe). Considering computer RPGs are less my thing than the FPS games on your list and that even with mods, it didn't seem to age particularly well, I dropped it when I realized I just plain wasn't enjoying it. YMMV (and hopefully it does).

In any case, given its RPG nature, ME's also one that, if you play and enjoy, you should take your time with side-quests. Spec Ops is very linear in comparison and keeps you moving from goal to goal, while Mass Effect's going to divert you with side-quests. While side-quests are sometimes simply to pad things out, they way they're meant to be used in an RPG is a way to let you spend more time enjoying the game universe, so the structure of the game doesn't lend itself to focusing on just completing the main story - Spec Ops, on the other hand, definitely does.
