Today I added a Visa Gift Card that I received from a friend as a method of payment for Steam purchases. Before I went to increase my gaming backlog, I noticed that I was charged $1 by Valve. Is this supposed to happen? Will I be getting my $1 back in one way or another? I already submitted a ticket to Steam Support, but I just thought I'd get some feedback from you guys.

Also, is it possible to make it so that Steam uses mainly my gift card instead of using up my Steam Wallet first and then adding in a bit of my gift card?

$1 is like 5 games if you buy a humble bundle :P

It's usually a verification thing. You should get it back in a day or two, I think.

I dunno about making it not use your wallet.

I hope you're right. Since the card isn't re-loadable (can't have funds added to it), how would I get it back? Would the "purchase" just be cancelled or something?

I'm not sure how Steam handles that kind of thing, if the card won't accept refunds onto it, I imagine they'll give you $1 for your steam wallet, or something. I'm sure they'll answer all your questions once they get around to answering your ticket though.

I can't help you with the charge, but if you'd like to add to your backlog check out that Greenlight sale. Here's some cool looking games on sale.
DLC Quest $.075
Postal 2 $2.50
Bleed $3.00
Reciever $2.50
Giana Sisters $3.75

+1 for Bleed and Giana Sisters

I've been wanting both of those for awhile, but I'll be using the $15 I have towards Skullgirls so that I can get basically all the DLC for free

Hells yeah. I've been kicking myself for missing out on Giana the last time it went for around $3, so now I'll have a nlice new hard platformer to pay. Skullgirls looks nice too, the new game that I'm eyeballing is Game Dev Tycoon. I loved the demo, so I'll probably get it soon. 20% off isn't a case of where I have to buy it right now though.

I'm a sucker for platformers and Giana Sisters made me wanna kick myself for not having the money or wanting to put my money somewhere else when it goes on sale. Game Dev Tycoon looks pretty interesting, but I agree with you on the fact that 20% off isn't enough.

Yeah, Giana looks really nice, but it'll get a sale again if you can't get it now. I'm hoping to get a 50% soon for Game Dev Tycoon.

No idea about that $1 - probably verification thing - but you can choose payment method when paying for games. Here's some screenie.

I've had fees like that before. They're temporary fees that are credited back to your card after a week or two. It's dumb, but you'll probably see it again.

Yeah it's just some kind of verification token. In my case usually it will be credited back in half an hour.

It's a charge that is done to make sure the card is legit. About every company does this when adding cards online. The $1 charge actually is a security measure. For one, being able to put in a charge shows the card is legit, but temporarily charging $1 also can act as a security measure against a brute force attempt to use a stolen card number. Some banks will even put on blocks or even contact the card holder if they see multiple $1 charges since that is an indication of a potential security risk or some other issue that needs to be cleared up.

It's not actually a charge though, it's actually a hold on the funds. They won't actually be removed from your account, they are just removed from your available balance that the card company uses to know if they should accept or decline the payment. Most banks return them pretty quickly, but it can take up to 48 hours to drop off and release the funds back to your available balance.

And if the gift card had any issues with this sort of practice, it would have declined you even adding the card in the first place. There's actually gift cards like that that you cannot use for online purchases at all and those you know mostly because there's nothing you can do to add them to an online account.

As far as how to get it to not use your wallet funds, click on "change" next to where it shows your wallet funds and then select the Visa ending in XXXX from the bottom of the dropdown. That selects the card you just added and replaces the wallet funds as a payment option. You can do that even if it's already showing the card in there, just tested it to be sure.
