My goal is to watch a sad anime movie per day until Sunday. I already watch The Silence Voice, Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, and I am currently downloading Grave of the Fireflies. I did google top 10 sad animes, but I want to hear what would you recommend (I need 4 more Anime titles).

Grave of the Fireflies was a FANTASTIC masterpiece. It's not anime. It's art at it's finest. Add Voices of a Distant Star to that list. Another masterpiece.

Once I finished watching it, I looked into it like all other things I enjoy when I finish them. Once I learned it was based on reality it hit me really damn hard.

Get a kick in the nuts, cut some onions, listen to Taylor Swift.

I want to eat your pancreas is a fairly recent sad anime movie. I watched it last week and thought it was okay. I guess Your Name is a bit sad too if you haven't seen it, but it feels like everyone has at this point.

Most websites rank it pretty high. The story seem weird, but I will definitely watch it.

Anime movies are limited by time constraints. If you really want to get the waterworks going, you need a few episodes at least. Getting invested really helps there. No recommendations come to mind, so uh, yeah. Good luck. \:3/

I suppose "Wolf Children" has bittersweet rings to it, but mostly it's just slice of life + fantasy elements. Mostly wholesome.

Princess Kaguya destroyed me.

I found Perfect Blue more scary and uncomfortable than sad. I'd recommend Millennium Actress instead if OP wants to cry.

I wanted to recommend Millenium Actress too. Not a huge tearjerker, but has such a weird, low-key sombre mood under a kind of cheerful surface.

Pokémon: The First Movie. I say jokingly, but it makes me cry every time.

Grave of the Fireflies is a great choice. Hayao Miyazaki's films in general make me emotional at some point.

That's no joke, my tears were are real ;-;

I've always felt that all of Miyazaki's films have a melancholy/real atmosphere that hit me in the feels. He just gets human emotion.

Absolutely agree. The attention to detail with the small things in life + the soundtrack escalate the experience that much more.

Grave of the Fireflies isn't actually Miyazaki's creation. Still, a spot-on suggestion.

No, thank you for not being passive-aggressive with me. :D I just don't think that the accidental "Miyazaki = the whole of Studio Ghibli" mindset is beneficial to anyone :)

If you need your soul crushed I recommend Nana first and foremost, but that's too long of a time commitment for what you want.

If you're up for watching dramatic war movies like Grave of the Fireflies, I also highly recommend In This Corner of the World, which is on Netflix. Even if you don't choose it for this week, you should try to see it at some point! It's one of the best films I've ever watched, period.

You might also want to give Barefoot Gen a shot, although I haven't seen that one and the older animation style might dull its impact.

Read the Kotoura-San manga (a story about a girl who can read minds but can't turn the ability off) so as to get an understanding of the characters and a general understanding of the difficulties the female lead has experienced in life. Then watch the first half of the first episode where her they show in much greater detail the suffering she went through (together with very powerful musical score). You MUST experience the story in that order to get the full effect. I was absolutely bawling from it.

Also if you're ok with reading manga instead of watching anime, check out "Murasakiiro no Qualia". Its not that long, but is one of the most bizzare, terrifying, and sad stories I've ever read.

spookypannkaka mentioned Your Name here, so I will recommend 5 Centimeters per Second which was directed by the same person. It was the first anime film ever recommended to me by a friend so I feel it's appropriate to share it myself.

I watched 5 cm last night, and it left me feeling piss off. The art and story are really good, but the main guy suck. I still piss off thinking about him. Why doesn't he return her call/texts? What is his problem? If he doesn't love her anymore or wanted to move on, why won't he just tell her?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I remember people were bothered by that, but I think it's not as simple as "they can just text each other".

I mainly say that because the same friend who shared it with me moved away some time ago, and it's sort of the same thing. Distance can be a psychological thing as well. To me it feels very real because I feel it first hand.

I recommend You are Umasou the film. It's a story about a T-Rex growing up as an orphan and getting adopted by herbivore dinosaurs.
I'm more of a manga reader though. Anything by Satoshi Mizukami is a masterpiece. Sengoku Youko and Spirit Circle are both one my favorites.
