clicky

I find this incredibly idiotic.
When you play a game like this, you play a character. Booker, in this case, does not care for the baptism but on the off-chance you do take things that happen ingame that seriously fair enough. Hold to your beliefs, its all well and good however the game in-question is a bioshock game. Bioshock where shooting people, setting them on fire, breaking necks and pushing them off the columbia to their doom occurs about just about all the time.

Do none of those things offend him? Thoughts?

The guy probably didn't get far enough to experience the shooting, burning and breaking of necks...

That wouldn't bother him, christian have been killing people over their "religion" since forever. Its perfectly fine.

People killed people, they just say it was over religion. It's sad.

I have developed a distaste for religion over time, but in a game I'm detached from things. I'm involved enough to play "good" if there's a choice, but I wouldn't let religious symbolism bother me unless it was aimed at me the player, rather than me the character.

Honestly, as long as he doesn't try to force it from the shelves or prevent other people from playing it, I could give less of a shit. Someone wants to live in their little cave, sheltered from the world, let them. As long as they don't try to pull me in with them... I like to see the stars.

He said he had played Bioshock 1 and 2, and probably others he hadn't mentioned, I find it hard to believe he hasn't killed a single person in a videogame.

He's very confused about playing a character versus being a human. If he's not wet, he wasn't baptized.

Wow, can't believe I read all that and wondered why the person is even involved with the internet. There are really offensive things to get upset about, but this is a game. Lighten up people, have some fun - or do some research on the game before purchasing. It's called youtube and the site is entertaining besides =)

So what you're saying is that you can play it, but you don't want to because you're an idiot and didn't check where the game was made? It's not like you bought a "China-only" version of the game by mistake. If you're the kind of guy that won't play a game because of where it was made, maybe you should check where the games you want to buy are made.

I applaud you for your boycott of UK goods. I know your reasons, and only wish that the UK would actually be harmed by a boycott by the Irish.

For those who are not students of history, it is in part a matter over the meaning of the word torture. The UK subjected at least 14 Irish prisoners during the 1970s to treatment that borders on the internationally agreed-upon legal definition of torture. The gov't of the UK and USA, and many other countries, can subject you to these not-quite-torture activities for as many years as they keep you imprisoned. Think of that with regard to Bradley Manning, who is just one more on the pile.

On the sarcastic side, I wonder if the Irish consume beer/stout mixtures as long as they are not referred to Black and Tans. You call it Half and Half, yes?

This is dumb. I am a Christian, and I would still play this game. It's not a mockery of baptism or anything, just setting up how Columbia functions. Completely fine to me

This whole thing could be solved pretty easily. Just add an ESRB content descriptor for "Religious References". Then people could see that on their $60 game and research what that means before they buy it.

I know I'm going to get jumped on for this, but I was very offended by the concept of "The Binding of Isaac" depicting Christians as essentially insane. Some will be fine with it, including Internet atheists that are fine with anything that bashes Christianity, but there would have been a lot of uproar about an identical game where the mother does the same things "because she's an atheist, and thus lacks any moral center."

I didn't demand a refund since I got it from a Humble Bundle. I did ask if it could be taken off of my account. Steam said no.

As a Christian, I took no offense at all. It would be stupid to do so. These are all symbolic to the content of the game.

And if you conclude I must be stupid to take offense, there's nothing I can possibly say to convince you. Just as there are things you take offense to that others would say are stupid to take offense to.

If you don't take offense, fine, but equating that to it supposedly being stupid to take offense means you have a real ego issue.

I dont really care because there are plenty of games that depict muslims as crazy. In the end you just have to accept the fact that someone has to be crazy or we will all be stuck playing remakes of Secret of the Magic Crystals

Even if I can hate few things as much as I hate baptism, there are many kind of stories around, I won't let a thing like that prevent me enjoying a good game.

I'm an atheist, and I don't care. It's just a game, and in the game the world is overly religious, so the baptism is part of the game and it's story. It's not like the makers are preaching at the players.

The guy couldn't have known about the forced baptism portion. Everyone is different when it comes to religion. I applaud Valve for issuing this refund. I do think they issued it to avoid possible conservative backlash, however.

For the record, I am atheist.

Oh no, that's so omg, now I can't play this game because there's baptism in it, I should search for another game where I can shoot people, that don't offend my religious beliefs xD

Videogames are just another media to deliver story, it's not like you would get a refund from a movie ticket or a book if they included a scene like OP described. People should grow thicker skin and stop taking everything so personal.

"The difference here," Malmberg explained to Kotaku, "is that you are forced to make a decision that violates those beliefs in order to continue with the game - which is not something I have run into very often."

Because games never force you to kill people, amirite? Man, he must've played a different version of Bioshock 1 than I did if he got through it without violating "thou shalt not kill."
