With the steam deck I think I'm moving past "Gaming PC" my PC now is I think from 2016? It overheats on some unity games -_- My next PC I think will be a mini PC Win11 and dual boot Linux. I want to slowly move away from Windows. Steam is making it much easier.

Those Unity games are probably not optimized well. :)
Gaming nowadays doesn't really needs Windows thanks to Valve. Other than industry standard programs Linux is more than enough for normal people. Not everyone is the same of course but I completely ditched Windows and doing fine, except some anti-cheat games but I generally don't play multiplayer games like I used to so it's okay.

A friend of mine has Win 8 on a laptop. Anyone know if he can simply auto upgrade to 10 or would he be able to still use his Win 8 key to activate fresh Win 10 install?

In my experience, Win7 keys work for activating Win10, so I assume it's the same for Win8.
I wouldn't recommend upgrading because it can make a lot of mess on your computer. Backup + clean install is always better imo.

My old laptop upgraded without my consent while I was playing something, so that was fun, but I didn't lose any files, which was nice. The direct download thing from Microsoft's website should be easy to do, they have good instructions written there.

The most ironical part is that the Steam Store contains quite a few old games that don't support Windows 10 (or even Windows 7 actually). So they'll become unusable just because of Steam itself, as their OS requirements will conflict with Steam's...
Maybe they should start thinking about providing a light client, for those of us who just launch Steam to use software they bought and not to browse the internet or chat or whatever.

True, but at least Valve kinda offers a solution. Though that game doesn't have any reports currently so results unknown. Things could evolve into homemade Steam machines in the future unless Microsoft finds a some legacy option for these.

I believe some of those older games that won't run on anything newer than XP work fine with Proton under Linux, so at least they're not completely gone.
But yes, we really need a basic legacy client that's just meant for playing games, right now the closest thing we have is running Steam in "no browser" mode which deactivates anything that isn't vital like chat and even the store itself, but it's more of a hack than a proper feature.

"X doesn't support Windows Y" doesn't mean that X doesn't work on Y, it means it won't be updated and supported anymore, now, if we are talking about a recent multiplayer game that's often updated, well, it's dead on Y, but if we are talking about a game launched on windows 7, than probably it will work on 10, maybe with some fancy workaround.
7 is not supported by microsoft itself, it's totally understandable to drop it's support

lol, given that the game itself often didn’t run on a lot of computers when it first released is no surprise.
Whatever the engine it used was super incompatible with the computers I tried it on in the past.
I wouldn’t even consider it a loss at this point.

I have an old PC and still use Windows 7. I'd rather not upgrade since everything is working fine. If I'm still using this PC next year I'll go without Steam for a while. My next PC, whenever I get that, will run Linux.

I'm still running windows 7 on desktop and my older netbook, at least my newer laptop has windows 10. I can definitely update my desktop to win 10, even tho it's a pain to be forced to, but that old piece of crap netbook ONLY has win 7 drivers. That tiny PC was actually ideal for running some old games that only look good at lower resolutions, but I guess now that thing is only gonna be useful for typing, its keyboard is oddly satisfying to use.
I really wish someone would make a minimalistic third party replacement client for older OS's, ideally an open source one, it has to be doable considering that ASF is a thing.

If you're looking for a more lightweight version of Windows 10, LTSC (Long Term Service Channel) is a good option. It is meant for organizations, but it doesn't have a lot of the bloatware of other Win10 versions such as Windows store, less telemetry, no Cortana, no ads in the start menu / lockscreen, among other things.

Windows 10 is not too bad and anything beats 11 at this point.
I completely disabled Cortana and some useless apps like their Groove player. For the most part full windows 7 functionality is still there. Just buried under their whitewash.

Didn't M$ also drop support or will be? I mean I was on XP till after 7 was found to be very stable. Then I was on 7 for a long time and only grabbed 10 because there was a stupid rumor it was "free only a limited time" but 10 has been good to me. I can't upgrade to 11 but I don't see that much difference. 11 seems to be 10 with new paint. Remember when they said 10 would be the last OS from them? -_- Odd we get 12 by 2025?

Windows 11 had more issues with each update than xp or 7 combined, and they keep adding more, I swear they don't do any QA testing.
The File Explorer freezing and crashing if you had more than 1 open was the worst.

I hope they don't drop W10 support anytime soon. My school computer is on 10 and I can't upgrade to 11 because programs I need for school don't work on windows 11. WSL/Ubuntu and Dr. Memory/Valgrind are the two main ones that until it's fully fixed, I can't upgrade.

I only upgraded to Windows10 this January10 cause on January12, Microsoft dropped all support for Windows 8.1.
My budget don't allow me to buy games that offten so I haven't bought any latest titles that only run on Win10 and onwards, but once Microsoft drops support for an OS, its obious every other piece of sofware will do so soon enough. Chrome dropped 8.1 a month or so prior to Microsoft doing so.

There's no need to upgrade in many cases, there's a bunch of DX9/DX11 games that will do fine on a "ancient" system if you want to call It like that, not everyone wants the latest GTA, some people just stick with some games for a long time, like LoL, Dota, CS-GO. There's no need for useless security updates either, you can install your operating system and leave as It is as long as certain software doesn't require X update. No malware here and I've never installed updates. Some of the Windows 10 updates screwed users bigtime when they just released them. Maybe if you're a bitcoin miner you want the best security but for the average user? Nah It's just paranoia.
At this pace a Steam Machine using the modified Steam Deck software for a PC seems like a better option.

Keep in mind that many working GPUs don't have driver support anymore but they will work fine on these operating systems with enough games on Steam. Functional motherboards will not work the best on Win10, you just create a pile of working "trash" because reasons.
My system has Win10 driver support and I already have all the drivers on my HD for a while since vendors don't keep them on their page for that long either, but I'm waiting for the final moment for this bullshit.

I had the CD install version of UT2004, think it was 4 discs.
But once it was installed you didn’t need them.
Unlike final fantasy, where you had to switch discs depending on how far through the game you were.
At least you could always go back and install it 15 years later on that dinosaur you kept for such things, right?
