I was waiting for a game to be downloaded and then played, but then when I click the play button, it gives me a "performing first time setup" window. Oh wow, great job, not "performing first time setup" while ALSO finishing downloading the game.

Also, why can I no longer have the option to skip the first time setup?

I think it's necessary since many important things that are too complicated for me to comprehend are installed and checked. In other words, DA MAGICZ.

Dumb suggestion. Selfquote:

It isn't so much about DirectX itself, but a helper Library, called DXUT. There are over 40 different versions of that, so you need to install it.

Then you deal with games that dont use the DXUT Feature. Or already installed tat version.
But if they do, you wont be able to start it. Generalizing this matter is not wise.

You know, that "setup" is there for a reason - and it's not only to annoy you.

Why the fuck do I need to install DirectX multiple times?

Simply because it's not always the same thing you are installing.

I do have to agree partially with you though - it would be interesting if they downloaded all the "installable" parts of the game first, and performed the setup while Steam is downloading textures, videos, etc...

just hit cancel and start the game again, it works for me

... and then find a freaking "bug" on the game and complain on the official forums, just to have someone answer "you should install those packages manually: [list of packages in first time setup]"

If you ask me, what's even more annoying is when you launch your game and with basic graphics configurations all at max. I can't understand why it is made taht way insted of the reverse, all at mini.

I know that devs want to make their games purdy, but couldn't they at least compromise and set everything to medium? It's no fun to have your computer slow to a crawl when medium or low graphics don't kill your computer.

Sensible games make an educated guess at what your PC can handle based on your graphics card/system information.
Sensible games also set the resolution to be the native resolution of your monitor or the maximum resolution it can handle, I'm fed-up with games that set the resolution to 1024x768, or worse, when I have a 1440x900 widescreen monitor.

Neither of those things is all that hard.

Well often my games start in 1920x1080 with AAx8 and all details at very highn except my computer can only run those games AA disabled and all low. And resolution not above 1024x780.

I may have a crappy computer, but I can still run many games, as long as they don't stop me from reaching the configuration menu to lower the settings.

As you said it is a first-time setup. You only have to do it once and it takes less than a minute. Thirty years ago you'd have to wait about half an hour to boot up games, every time.

Oh, I remember installing some games in Windows 3.11 (yeah, not the ones you could run from DOS) that would take 2~3h to install. And of course, no using the computer for other stuff while it's installing, you don't want it to explode!

Of course you can't use the computer for other stuff, you have to change the diskettes every 30 seconds!

Actually, that problem is very easy to avoid.

Since first time setups only happen the first time you play the game, skip the first time and start with playing it the second time right away.

Edit the installscript.vdf, and delete all contents, save, and make read only. Or just delete it. Never be bothered by first time setups again(for that specific game) I'd make sure you do it at least once just to make sure you have everything you needed installed from it, but if it keeps doing first time setup everytime you start the game, do the installscript.vdf trick.(which is located inside the specific games folder).

Yeah, it is a little annoying. I did a web search for info recently and found some article that said it's because of some helper library (or something) of DirectX, not the main app itself. Apparently there are lots of different versions of that library, and there's no guarantee that a game developed with one version of it will work properly with another version, so they have to install whatever version the game used the first time you run it. I guess it makes sense, but doesn't really explain why games are so sensitive to the version of this library. shrug
