Heyaa, I'm upgrading my PC now and thinking about getting new motherboard, processor, GPU and RAM (because oldish DDR3 won't necessarily fit into new motherboard).

Here's what I've got now:

  • AsusTeK P8Z68-V GEN3 (LGA 1155)
I need help to decide should I go LGA 1150 or LGA 1151, tell me hints on which to choose
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti SLI
Was thinking about buying GTX 1060 because it's cheap and I play and use screen that is 1080p, any thoughts?
  • Intel Core i5-2500K @ 3,30Ghz
Something that can run all (or at least most of them) new games like Mafia III, Deus Ex: Manking Divided, DOOM on max settings

And I guess rest of my setup is unnecessary. Currently I've 16Gb DDR3 memories, but I can buy DDR4 ones if the motherboard will be LGA1151.

Looking for hints and suggestions on what to get and why. Thanks!

GPU upgrade only (for now)

  • DDR4 doesn't matter jack (no noticeable difference for common use)

  • new Intel CPU's "Kaby Lake" will be released sometime end 2016 or starting 2017 (soon enough)
pricing might also change a good bit once AMD has gotten somewhat more competitive with its upcoming ZEN CPU's
... and Intel could forced to reduce their prices on already available CPU's to "compete" aggressively

  • GPU whichever suits your needs and wallet > rx 470, rx 480, gtx 1060 - the 1070 and 1080 too damn expensive in yurup
(i'd go with a cheap rx 480 8gb - best bang for the buck ... or if its in the same price range gtx 1060 6GB since they outperform
    amd in almost every game/benchmark)

But won't performance be affected by my processor even if I change GPU? :/

For GTX 1060 your Intel Core i5-2500K is enough.

Unless you get a GTX 1070 or 1080, no.

for sure but not by much - if i remember correctly from some review somewhere around ~ 3- 10 fps MAX
(heavily depending on the game and settings ... only 1 that comes to mind GTA V as CPU heavy game )

Interesting, I guess I will have to at least try just upgrading GPU and see what happens. Thanks for the video link! :)

Intel Core i5-2500K @ 3,30Ghz with 16GB sounds pretty fine.

My suggestion: Buy a new GPU only.

If you are not happy with performance one day for some special game, you can still upgrade to newer CPU + Board anyway.

True that. I think I'll go buy the 1060 tomorrow and see how it runs Mafia III and other games. I didn't quite think through testing if GPU change would be enough. Thanks for the help ^_^

Is GTX 1070 that much better than 1060? Here it cost 289€ for ASUS GeForce® GTX 1060 6GB GAMING OC and 469€ for ASUS Geforce® GTX 1070 8GB DUAL. I can afford them both, I just couldn't find any good comparison between those two on how they perform differently in games, looked kind of like if I play on 1080p it's all the same. :)

Also, what's the biggest difference between Asus and MSI? Is the noise change really that noticeable?

It looks like the 1070 is about 40% faster while costing about 60% more (at the prices you listed). It's up to you to decide if it is worth it.

Overclock your CPU, get a new GPU and you're good.
It's a shame to see a 2500K at stock clocks. ;_;

Just buy an AMD RX 480 or a GTX 1060 6 GB version. Replace the CPU and motherboard the next time you want to upgrade the PC or if you see that the CPU regularly gets to 100% utilisation in games.

As everyone else said, you're best just getting a better gpu. Anything else is just a ton of money for minimal frame increase.

Just buy a new GPU.
You can overclock your CPU if necessary.

Buy an aftermarket CPU cooler and overclock it to 4.2 - 4.5 Ghz. Then put the rest of the money into a GPU. Everything else is still good.

So, I bought a new GTX 1060, but what I didn't realise my 560Ti used old DVI-I as a connector to monitor, tried to connect via HDMI, but my monitor was apparently not really working well with HDMI (and warranty ended 2 years ago already) so I ended up buying new monitor for 310€.

Guess I will need to upgrade everything eventually. :/

Thanks for all your hints, all games are working nicely now, still can't run Deus Ex: Mankind Divided on ultra though, but high settings look fine enough for me.
