Easy solution: Cancel the purchase, get a refund, buy the game again for full price. Or alternatively - stop buying from Steam. Works for me.

"gift is stored in your inventory" really? they did not updated their automatic responses after they stopped allowing us to store gifts in inventory...

I guess sb added text for future function... or function cut of before release. Or function was modified over time (like storing gifts) but text was left the same as generally quite often different teams makes control and frontend (also "different parts of them" of and "over time"). Happens every now and then.
Well, support can't do much unless they have proper tools... easiest solution would be refund (support... or maybe even you can do this via wizard) + buy again. Proper communication is everything :)

A few years back I noticed one of my steam games was missing, so steam support game me a 4-pack of the game as compensation. :x

Ah, steam support, always so helpful.
