came here to say this. online's free don't worry about it :D I have SF4 and play online for free. Wish AE was just an upgrade unfortunately you have to buy an entire new game for 40-ish bucks.

If you buy SF4, I would go for the retail version, because it still uses the old GFWL system, which means the game won't be permanently bound to your GFWL account and you will get (about) 15 activations, which means you could possibly sell the game, if you don't like it.
If you buy SF4 AE, it doesn't really matter, because you have to permanently bind it to your GFWL account (no activation limit though) and it's only for you to decide, if you want to have it as a permanent game in your Steam library as well (you won't get any Steam specific benefits like cloud save, achievements or steamplay).
