story

I'd choose story over graphics, seems obvious – that's what keeps the game interesting. Although the most important part of the game is gameplay in my opinion.

Story over graphics, it worked pretty well with books as well :D But graphics surely should reach some quality level, or at least be same, without quality dips

I think the fact that Berserk 2017 is still popular enough to get more seasons is all the proof you need that people care more about the story.

well if you only talk of anime and such then obviously story.

pc games on the other hand are whole different story... no matter how good the story is if the design is crappy - so both important :)

But design is not part of graphics. You can have a game with shitty graphics but great gameplay design - Minecraft, for example.

Depends what, but in most case, story comes first.

The reason I say it depends, is because some things are simply aesthetically pleasing without needing a deep/meaningful story. For example, you could play a game which has interesting/trippy visuals, and you may enjoy it for that alone although it actually doesn't have a great story.

The same can be said about games with great story and poor/simple graphics - a game can be an amazing journey without any complex graphics, animations, etc. Any media can focus on only one element and be a great success nevertheless. It's all about what you decide to focus on - Visuals, sound, story, complexity... it goes on.

Some media even manage to nail two elements to create something wonderful. Typically, the focus should be based on what you're attempting to create. If, for example, I wanted to make a multiplayer FPS game, I'd pick graphics. No story is needed, only great gameplay and nice visuals. If I were to make an anime, I'd focus on story over visuals.

However, that's another thing - each media should focus on elements differently. A game does not need amazing graphics to be playable. An animation however, does tend to require a certain level of effort in the visuals. It doesn't need to be stunning, but enough to keep your audience entertained so that they can appreciate the story - the focus of your project.

Story :)
A lot of the older animes are great, even if the graphics are outdated. Like GTO, Golden Boy or Cowboy Bebop.

If you want both, then you should try "Made in Abyss" :)
Don't get irritated by the childish look, it gets pretty dark :P

Well, looks like quite a number of people missed the word "anime" in the post...

I personally lean more towards the artistic side of the anime (visual, animation and character design) than the storyline, though if I receive a recommendation for an anime based on the storyline, then I'd watch it. That said, when I pick up a new anime to watch, I'd usually scan through both the poster and the synopsis to get an idea of what the anime is about, so I rarely miss an anime with good storyline.
