Usually it isn't possible to enter a DLC you don't have the base game so it has to be an API error.

Mostly bot users. It happens all the time if you do this on public, on any level. But level 0 is the worst.
If you do a DLC giveaway, try to go for those where people cannot enter without a base game check.

Well, there is the argument of Chromatic versus Metallic. Generally the Metallic ones are considered to be good, often lawful. However the Chromatic ones are the more self centred and generally evil and unlawful.
But you do have to admit, it kinda seems silly for giant ancient magical super beings that ruled the world to observe the legal restrictions created by the gnats that inherited the world.
The bad eggs of the dragon world did sorta skew people's opinions on all dragons. One green destroys a village and all the kingdom suddenly follows a blanket anti-dragon policy.

At least this way you can drastically increase your blacklist by blacklisting anyone who autojoins

It does help when you check on Steam if you already own a game\DLC or not before you enter a giveaway.

I guess some people might just assume that the "Hide DLC if you're missing the base game?" option is infallible. I find that it usually works, but I still check DLC GAs - mostly because I want to make sure I don't enter if I already own that particular piece of DLC.

Yeah, but that just shows that you don't want what you're entering for to begin with. That, in my eyes is even weirder. It's basically like taking stuff just for the sake of taking them.

To me, this is a very scummy on the behalf of those users that enter without checking. You don't even have to check really because you probably already are aware of the games that you own in general. You're getting a chance at free stuff. Have the dignity and respect to spend 30 seconds of your time to make sure that the you won't have to waste the gifter's time.

To answer the poll: yes, I have a script that puts a checkmark next to all the games I own. Before that I always checked manually.
The giveaway in question is as already mentioned bugged. I don't own the base game and could enter as well, so I hid it completely.

Any chance this is a public script? I have a good idea of what games of mine have API issues, but it would be a nice way to double-check.

I'm also having issue with that. That DLC has a problem that it doesn't properly detect the base game.
In this case, it's an easy mistake to assume you already owned the base game.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's an honest mistake with some newer members. I have DLC GAs hidden for games I don't own, so I went through a lot of confusion the first time I saw one of those F1 giveaways (since I also hadn't heard of API errors like that up until then) on the main page.

Some DLCs also don't count as DLC in the Steam Store so you can enter for them even if you don't have the base game.
Edit: And peoples libraries are so big they just click (or let click) on things that look interesting cause they can't remember what they already have ;)

I made a GA for a quake 1 dlc like a year ago and i'm sure 90% of the people who joined had auto join. If only i would have added every single one that asked for a re-roll to my black list..

Just by checking the steamgifts profiles you can see that they probably use autojoins. Doing some math, most of them enter about 70-100 GAs per day. That's a lot.
