i loved watchmen and have been aching to read something with as much depth and literary skill. can anybody recommend to me a grphic novel, comic book series with adult themes and an intelligent story?

Maybe you would be interested in other works by Alan Moore. In that case you should try Lost Girls.

Grendal series is pretty good, and all the Sandman graphic novels are a must read.

For literary comics, you can't do better than Gaiman's Sandman. Maus is up there, too, if you like history and/or anthropomorphism.

If you're looking for something that's smart and gritty, you'll like Warren Ellis. Among Ellis' works, I recommend Transmetropolitan and Global Frequency above the rest. Also great but perhaps less relevant: FreakAngels (available free online) and The Authority.

Also of note: Garth Ennis' Preacher. Grant Morrison's The Invisibles. Alan Moore is of course a genius, but he's already been recommended throughout this thread.

V for Vendetta, Sandman, Preacher. Those four are some of my favorites. If you want something more comical then Johnny The Homocidal Maniac and/or Squee.
