Hijack'd first comment!
According to my current steam data:
Dungeon Defenders (lots of afk shopping, at least half of it or so) 1189.5 hours
Team Fortress 2 (lots of afk for items/hats back in the days, actually got little ingame time) 525.12 hours
Borderlands 2 (95% playing, 5% afk, random estimate) 318.68 hours
In reality, this is all a lie, at some point i had over 3k hours clocked in half life and over 800 hours clocked in team fortress classic, both of which vanished. Half life time was mostly due to mods keeping me busy, i did clear out alot of mods for HL and tried alot of different things aswell. Team Fortress Classic is what got me hooked up after i got bored with CS 1.5 and earlier versions (back in the day), and doing surf/climb/rocket jumping/pipebomb jumping/conc jumping/variety of fun maps and whatnot, i probably clocked over 1k hours in this game.
And then there is runescape, i think it's somewhere around the same situation as Half Life in terms of time spent, maybe a bit less.
And a last item to be listed, Halo 2. When it got out, i was just a kid and i got seriously addicted to it's campaign. To the point of spending 3-4 hours in this game for around 2 years, almost everyday, which is insane. I don't even know how i handled such a thing, playing a campaign billions of times in all difficulties, with different skulls settings found in the game... Played this game to the point of exploring almost every corner of each map in the campaign mode using grenade jumping, exploited the crap out of this game doing this, even managed to skip certain parts by walking through walls and floors. Though what got me hooked up mostly in this game was the rivalry found in the game between the various species, i would just sit back and enjoy the slaughter show. Good times...

I logged over a year of playing time in WoW over several years. If I were you, I wouldn't start playing WoW now - it is nowhere near the game it was back in the vanilla, TBC or WotLK days. And, well, it seems that all the leveling stuff just got easier and leveling as it used to be almost vanished, because "everyone needs to get to max level right now." ... all that "pre-order Warlords of Draenor and get an instant lvl 90 character!!!" nonsense doesn't help either. I was tempted to come back too, but I realized it is not the game I loved anymore.

Well on Steam it's:
Outside of Steam though, it'd be:
Runescape - approx 7000 hours
World of Warcraft - Approx 4000 hours
I might be a bit off on those two, I'm just going from memory and it's been quite some time since I've played either.

Super Mario in general
World of warcraft
Call of duty [series]
League of legends
also Grand theft auto series

Probably Dota 2 & MapleStory (although most of the latter's hours aren't recorded on Steam). After that...I guess it's Civ 5 but that's far less than the first two.

I'm more surprised by the Universe Sandbox answers

I love strategy games, and the most of them are real time killers.
Especially:
The most played game ist WoW for sure, although I stopped playing it 2 years ago.

Outside of steam:
1 4500+ hours of League of Legends
2 2500+ Runes of Magic
3 1500 Baldur's Gate II
Only steam:
1 250 Skyrim
2 150 Mount & Blade: Warband
3 120 Path of Exile (but if you include that i was playing around 100 hours before it appeared on steam it will be a bit higher)

+1 for Warband. My goodness the hours I've dropped into that game.

Wow... that's hard to know exactly since pre-Steam era the time was not recorded automatically.
I believe it is something like this:
1) Civilization II (the game I played most for many, many years)
2) Counter Strike (since 1.3)
3) Wolfenstein 3D (the first one, not Return to Castle)
