I'm looking at Anno 2070 but am unsure what to think about it. Game play footage looks fun and I think I would get into it. Reviews are mixed, but seem to be if you download uPlay first and then the Steam game it will work without issue. Does anyone have it or have suggestions?

The Complete Pack is currently $9.99 from Steam or ~$6.40 from Nuuvem. Nuuvem is a direct uPlay copy, not Steam.

I have tried just one game from the Anno series in the past, I think it was 1404 on PC. And also I played one on my phone but don't remember wich one. I just wanted to say that they are pretty addictive games if you like the genre and you should give it a try if you feel like it.

Sorry I can't help about 2070 technical issues. But i will leave a BUMP

Reviews are mixed, but if you look at most of the negative ones they say the game is great. The only reason for negatives from what I've seen is UPlay.

That's what I'm seeing as well.

Personaly like Anno 1404 more, but 2070 can be fun aswell, it's adictive like the previus titles.
But beware you can only install on 3 different PC's. Please correct me if i'm wrong but i know that used to be a fact.

I'm wondering about that myself. Some uPlay reviews state there's a limit to the number of activations, but a Steam review links a guide on how to get unlimited. I haven't looked into it enough. It almost makes me want to pay the extra $3.50 to get it from Steam rather than direct, but something about that seems completely backwards. :p

From what i found you have 4 activations at first ( the initial one + 3), once you use up all of them, you'll get a new one every month till you reach 3 again.

Looks like only the Steam version has an activation limit of 3 http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Anno_2070
So just get the uPlay version, it's cheaper, no activation limit and you would need uPlay also for the steam version anyway so you don't really have any advantage by getting the steam version.

It uses TAGES and that's all the reason i need to never buy it. Unless that garbage gets removed like it got removed from Anno 1404.

What is TAGES, anyway? I see it listed with a lot of games but am not familiar with it.

It's, as far as i know, one of the most shitty and hated DRM that is extremely easy to crack, comes with a limited number of installs and has been known to cause issues both with games that have used it, in some cases leading to it getting removed from the game(like it was removed from Anno 1404) and in other cases issues with other software and has even been accused of various invasive actions(tho i'v not really looked into it and it may just be people being paranoid). It does not prevent piracy in any way basically only fucks over paying customers by making you have to ask for additional installs if you run out of them and, if the dev/publisher ever goes out of business you're shit out of luck and can no longer play the game.

I personally stay away from any game using it. And in the case of Anno 2070 i find it absolutely retarded that it needs to use TAGES as well after having both Steam DRM(if you buy it on steam), Uplay and the Always Online thing called Ark(or something like that) that makes you lose access to certain features if you don't play it in online mode.

It sounds like people who bought it say you get 3 activations per 30 days. I don't see myself ever using that many per month, but it doesn't make any sense to add on top of Steam. I wonder if it's as bad as SecuROM? I've heard nightmarish things about that.

No, Securom is still the king of garbage and the people who created it should never be allowed near a computer again. But i'm sure TAGES's devs made a go for it's crown tho :)

SecuROM, Tages, uPlay and Origins DRM. Are all the same. Bad bad bad.

You have never had to deal with Starforce then. Ubisoft used it on prince of Persia 3. After reports of it breaking down players OS and persisting after uninstalling, I think they removed it from the game.

Funny enough i did actually deal with it on a couple of games, lucky for me it caused me no issue. I have heard tales tho. However the same and worse is said for Securom(it also persists after uninstalling in some cases) hence why i said it's the king, i'v heard people say it even broke hardware, i have no idea if it's true or not tho.

Ugh, TAGES is even worse than I realized.

TAGES was designed by marketing men and accountants whose combined gaming experience was 5 minutes of "Snake" on their cellphones. I suspect that they were ankle deep in bodily fluids by the end of that meeting, with first degree chafing on their palms from all of the furious back-slapping.

For everyone else, it is an anathema. A system meticulously designed to deliver a balls-deep boning to each and every fee paying customer, and the best advertisement for piracy I can think of.

The hilarious part is that if you go to the game's seam hub you will actually find people defending TAGES lol.

I bought it on one of my first holiday sales, back then when I was new on Steam, when I didn't know anything about Uplay and TAGES. I wouldn't buy it again. The problem isn't so much Uplay by itself, it's the combination of limited installations and Uplay to slow it down. After buying it on Steam, it gives you a code for Uplay, then you go install Uplay, which took me ages, then when finally running Uplay, that stupid thing wanted me add friends first, like some stupid social network, then it had to patch again, before I could even dream of playing and trying out my new game. Now combine all that fuss with limited installs because of TAGES, and forced online built into the game even when you play a classic singleplayer campaign. If you like citybuilder strategy games like Anno, you should go for Anno 1404, because they've completely removed the DRM with the latest patch so if you can grab that one on slae somewhere you're in fact better off than with 2070, trust me.

That sounds... Awful. O.O Really poorly done. Thank you for all of the first-hand feedback. It's appreciated.

I don't see any mention of TAGES with buying it directly from uPlay. I wonder if it's there or just with the Steam version?

It's still there, Uplay just does not bother with mentioning such things.

TAGES is burried real deep into the game, so I guess it doesn't matter where you get it from. If you get it from Uplay
you have at least the advantage that you won't have Steam as a third DRM meddling in the mix. The worst part is
still that they forced being online into the gameplay, removing crucial functions even from singleplayer campaigns
if you play in offline mode. I still hope, that one day ... maybe when the new Anno 2210 (or whatever it's called)
comes out they will remove that DRM crap, just like they did with 1404. Meanwhile, just play 1404, or pester their support.
It's simply not acceptable how they treat paying customers and it's very bad business practice that they sell their
Uplay stuff on steam. I mean, Origin is not ideal either, but at least EA has the decency to sell only those games on steam
that don't strictly require Origin.

I liked the game and it's the only game that runs without problems on uplay.
In a nutshell the game is about gathering and managing resources, you build a mine to gather metal to build houses to have more workers so you can have better farms so your houses are bigger to have more workers to... I think you get the idea, you get a resource that you use to generate more workers or other type of resources. the difficulty is keeping the balance on the resource chains.
I have never played other anno games so i can't comment if this is better or not then previous games. Personally i also think you should get the complete pack since the extra missions and the expansion were pretty cool. I think i played around 20 hours and only did a couple of missions (6-8).
My only complaint of this game is the combat system, it feels very "shoehorned".

I have it on uplay it's quite fun. I almost ended campain mode and i say older Annos are better.
It's not bad of course, but for example 1404 is more complicated and will test your skills, this is just too easy.
Plus i had key from magazine and i remember i must write it 3 or 4 times to activate my copy in different boxes, it was annoying.

I skimmed most of the replies and saw that there were already some favorable recommendations for Anno 1404, which is what I intended to do after reading the topic. I just reinstalled it recently and am very glad I did, already ruffled-collar deep in the late middle ages world of mercantilism and city-state building.
That said, is ANNO 2070 of interest because of the setting and time period, or because you just want a good trading sim? Reading of the disasters accompaying TAGES I would strongly recommend checking out Dawn of Discovery which is just what Steam renamed Anno1404. because they got rid of Tages in Patch 1.1.

Yeah, i second this, buy Anno 1404 Gold, it's an awesome game, graphics still look gorgeous and it has 0 DRM, If i remember right it does not even have steam DRM, you might be able to just put a shortcut on your desktop and launch it without opening steam.

I was worried too some days ago about it because of all the negative reviews about drm and difficulties to install/reinstall the game.
Luckily a friend gifted me a uplay version of the game. Installation worked perfectly and except the dull graphics, game is very cool.
Advice would be to buy the game on uplay to have 2 drm instead of 3 and a installation easier. But if it's not possible, there still is the refund system on steam now fortunately.

I have it and found it a bit daunting just to get started ;) I don't know it feels like what you do makes a difference for the rest of the game so I have been sort of taking a running start and not making it of the block yet ;)
