I'm beginning to feel a bit of the same, can especially relate to the gaming ADD. Not sure when the flip happened, I used to be able to play a single game day-in-day-out for months. I'm starting to think a "gaming calendar" of some sort is in order. Otherwise, you're right, they will simply never get played.

The Backlog is a furious beast. To tame it you have to... uh... I dunno. I'm in the same boat. (Except for the exact opposite reason- always play everything to 100% to the point that there isn't enough time in the world for all the games.) So I guess you can't defeat it? XD
Maybe try this group if you haven't already? :P

Look at your library then laugh at yourself
Anyway, that also happens to me with my huge library that contains 60 games sarcasm
I always want to buy new games and collect them all.
Just stop yourself from buying things you dont need. There is nothing else left to do instead of playing your backlog one by one or just leave them.

If I would have to drag myself to store, then I would barely have any games. Way too lazy to go and get stuff. Steam, and the digital distribution, have made things easy. Bit too easy.
Maybe it's good for the industry, but not good for my library, it just keeps getting fatter and no sight of proper exercise for it.

Just do one at a time. Finish one and then only move on to the next. Also, spend less time on the only multiplayer, never ending games as they eat your already limited time gaming on something that leaves you with nothing finished.
Even if you're only spending 30mins a session, if you focus that to one game at a time you will finish them quicker and it will feel like you're accomplishing something.
Also maybe think about buying games that you will actually play, if your 'fix' right now is collecting you might find it difficult to even enjoy some of the games you are purchasing..
Either way, too many games is a better problem to have than too few..

Best solution I've had so far is having three main categories...
Focused for 1-3 games you're actively trying to beat.
Completing for 1-3 games you're actively trying to get all endings/achievements, etc.
And Random for everything you play occasionally because you want to play a variety of games.
I rarely hit the Completing category much, since those are usually grinds, but it's a small category so it doesn't feel overwhelming. Don't feel bad about pulling a game out of the category if you find you don't really want to Complete it anymore.
I hit the Focused category quite a bit, and have been finishing more games as a result of it also being small (and thus, unintimidating).
I've got 16 games in my Random category... I don't hit all of them, and games cycle in or out occasionally, but it's nice to have another relatively small selection apart from the gigantic library when you don't feel like playing one of the Focused or Completing games. I also keep a couple of "on-deck" games in Random, ready to be moved into Focused when I finish a game.

I have that issue with my backlog in general (including consoles). I try attacking short games, so I can knock them out, but then I feel like I'm spending time play decent games instead of playing some of the awesome games in my library. Then I play some of those, but they always seem to end up being really long games. And during those long games, I seem to add a few more games to my backlog.
Usually, I'll triage out some console games when my shelf gets full. That's how I know I hit my limit for fringe-interest games. Unfortunately, it doesn't really work that way for Steam. I do have Trash and Completed categories in Steam, though. Triaging some of the smaller/fringe games can help there, too.

Install a few games at a time. Don't install more until you've beaten the previous ones. I've beaten quite a number of games over the last month doing that.

Put 20 mins into each to see which you find best. Keep a list of the ones you most enjoyed and go back to them and it should decrease some backlog. Perhaps try another 20 mins after this with your remaining backlog again to see if you want to play them more.

Grab a pumpgun and shoot the tower =)
I´ve got around 300+ games on my account, most of them unplayed. Most of the time I sit here and watching bored at my library^^ I think the problem is that we´ve got to much games! As I was young I played games on my C64....most of them were hard and challenging, but yesterdays there were so less stuff and games..that you finished them =)

Haha I know that feeling! There is just something fun about getting games at great deals :) Game collecting is it's own meta-game!
I made a group to help me focus on my backlog. Sometimes chatting with others about what you're playing, or setting goals helps you stay on target :) Good luck!

My total steamlibrary sits at around 900 Games and has a worth of about 10.000$, but I haven't even touched over 500 of them!
As time goes by I seem to have less and less motivation to actually play the games, but the urge to collect them is stronger then ever: buy all the bundles, get all the deals, make the library grow and feel good about it.
Even when I try to sit down and finish a game I just stop after half an hour and do something else, my attention span seems to be at an all time low and I have no idea how to boost it.
So the question is: How can I defeat the evil backlog and stop myself from getting distracted even while playing games I want to finish?
Also here is a small incentive for your help. :3
Edit: Better post this here for everyone to see.
Hooray, I just finished a game!
I came to terms with the fact that I can probably never beat all of my games. With that realization came the acceptance of playing on easy and cheating the everloving crap out of a story-focused game if I get stuck for a prolonged amount of time. Obviously that does not count for games like Super Meat Boy or Dark Souls, where the tough journey is the goal in itself, but I'll see. I will try out strategy games and rougelikes, but most of them are to time consuming or based around endless repetition, eating time like no ones business.
I will reduce the amount of bundles I buy, already skipped some this month, and will resist the urge to buy newer games on sale unless it's the goty at 75% or something like that. Achievmenthunting will also have to take a backseat, I will prioritize beating the game at all above all else and won't come back to it unless I have a lot of fun doing the achievments.
Last but not least I will try to check the games at howlongtobeat.com to get a grasp of the time I would have to spend on them.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, I will continue to collect games without feeling bad about it and I hope to tame the backlog some day and force it upon my enemies.
