maybe because EA bought PopCap back in 2011 http://uk.ign.com/articles/2011/07/12/ea-buys-popcap-games

Example 1: Why Orgini is #@##@#@%^@!$$%!@#^%!#%$
Origin's end-user license agreement (EULA) gives EA permission to collect information about users' computers regardless of its relation to the Origin program itself, including "application usage (including but not limited to successful installation and/or removal)

ugh ... this isnt exclusive to origin...its just used as an excuse to hate on origin and also a result of the general public being clueless. like when they said the samething about punkbuster....hello punkbuster has always done that its how it works but some ass wrote an article for hits and caused a shitstorm

They provide a cool service, regular discount deals and a cool client with a good library and social features = massive win compared to anything else. +they were among the very first and made an excellent move with making HL2 available for Steam only.

I assume it's a mix of both. They don't look at other MMO's much because they like WoW and they're used to it. Same is true for Steam. Steam is the market leader and I'm content with it, so why should I switch to a different company? If someone made a cool search engine that was just as good as Google, people would still keep using Google.

Steam is successful because it was created by the people who changed how first person shooters were.

because it has origin as its main competition so yea... :D

Steam is so successful because it was the first, and for a good long while only digital distributor for PC games. So, even if Origin is a much better program than Steam, the overall userbase and wide library of Steam completely overshadows the competition.
As for Uplay, it's just a god awful piece of software.

Pretty much this, plus the fact that they had popular games as part of Steam (Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, Counter-Strike). Once people were invested in their Steam library, they wanted to try and keep their collections in one place, rather than trying to remember which site sold them which game.

Good games, trading, steam wallet, steam market, all games on 1 place, Gaben, IceFrog <3, steam trading cards , you can get most of games for free by buying with steam wallet that you earnd by selling stuff on market, they listen community when it comes to updateing their own games, then amazing sales, always inovative, then they were here with us pc gamers when other companies went to make only console games, Valve was always here for us <3 , and milion other reasons.... Steam <3 Valve <3 Dota <3

It was the first by YEARS, has cheap/free games all in the same convenient place, keeps improving and diversifying its services and... it works.
The only downside I could experience is the customer service: the one time I needed a hand, they simply copy/pasted pieces of some FAQ I already read. Twice. <.< Even though I managed to find the solution on Steam's Forum, I still expect a bit more from GabeN.

Or rather, what separates Steam from the competition?
