It was given by Golden Joysticks around March I think. So sorry, but you can't get it anymore.

As a side note, that giveaway was delayed around a lot, and some people were given a PC Gamer magazine subscription instead.

Last year's (or 2y ago?) promo that ended up to be a shitstorm. They said keys are for Europe, but they didn't lock them and the promo started during the night (EU time) so just to make it more fun, non-europeans got the vast majority of keys that was supposed to go to europeans :D And then as a valuable game, ofc people hoarded dozens to sell, essentially destroying the promo before it really started.

Last year's (or 2y ago?) promo that ended up to be a shitstorm.

Neither. It wasn't part of the actual yearly Golden Joysticks Event. It was a loyalty event for their European subscribers, that fell between the last Golden Joysticks and this most recent one. However, since they promoted it to their subscribers by way of a simple targeted e-mail, and didn't offer any sort of validation elements to the event, the e-mail got leaked, and the promotion was horribly abused, with individual people potentially getting dozens of keys.

Since that's the very kind of abuse that [removing games from SG] is supposed to block, there's no chance the game'll get put back on the site, unless the keys do manage to get deactivated at some point.

guarenteed = the key (or gift) is directly from IG, the GA creator didn't see/have it - so it cannot be duplicated key, for example. And if it was, they would give you another one.
not guarenteed = just a key from users like here, so it can be duplicated key

While terrible people are terrible people, the blame in this instance should go to GJ, who should have just cancelled the event altogether, fixed the issues, and relaunched it. Either way they were going to face an equal amount of user dissatisfaction, considering how it seems nearly all the keys went to multi-winning abusers [you should have seen some of the traders after the event magically popping up with a dozen Dark Souls keys], so the approach that rewarded the abusers was clearly the least favorable one.

So no, direct your scorn toward GJ. Bad people may do bad things, but they're so reliable in their twisted approach that you can view them more as a natural disaster. It doesn't mean you should view them favorably, just that you can't really do anything about them. Meanwhile, GJ openly encouraged the matter to happen with a series of terrible decisions. Since we CAN change their approach to things by evidencing scorn toward them, that's clearly a much more constructive use of our attentions than yelling at the wind.

But WHYY would they do this?!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Game becomes free -> people stock up on it in hopes of getting Profitz™ from trading and giveaways on SG -> game gets removed from SG giveaway list, while the game's trade value plummets -> people end up with multiple keys they don't really need and can't really do anything with them, other than doing free keydrops, or feeding their alts if the game has cards.

If the giveaway is massive enough it's added to the free list and you can't make giveaways for it forever.

The keys were supposedly time-limited, so I think support might just need a reminder that it's time to reinstate the game

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sometimes I feel like a few games should be removed from that list - it's just sad that denies the community from great games just because possibly there's still a few copy around

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

In this instance, people hoarded dozens of the keys, so it's really probably the one single game that should never be removed. :X

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The game would be on bundle list anyways, giving only 15%. first 5 copy giving full value, afterwards each of them 10% less, so n=1-> ; 0.9^n. Unless I really fucked up something in wolframalpha, by making endless giveaways the value is: 5 full value and all the others add up for 9 others. The game is 20P, 14*20= 280$ CV, but as bundled, it would only net 42$ / abusing account. Which is around how much a HH IG 5-pack would worth for less than 5 bucks. I know it's still CV from nothing, but in this (and a few other) cases I think the community could get way more out of the giveaways, than a very few people that would possibly play on the system. Not to mention that the game has way higher trade value than the 3$CV it would give, so people would even cause financial harm for themselves for giving away their free copies. (I really meant only a handful games that got removed for promos like this, not the IG clutter types)

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm not actually sure I can poke holes into that argument. It takes 6.66 giveaways to break even on bundle CV to retail price, meaning that (assuming noone got more keys than the users bragging about getting, or listing for trade around 20) they'd get credit for about two unbundled games all told. Definitely shameful to reward thieves and scammers and otherwise thoroughly scummy individuals with the acknowledgement of contribution that CV gives, but in terms of benefit to the site, you may be correct that the effect would be minimal and mostly balance itself out in pros and cons.
Especially so since the event supposedly didn't even have an extreme amount of keys to begin with, so the number of these users shouldn't actually extend much past the ones that've already made themselves visible on the various trading/giveaway/resale sites.
Put another way, the more one person abuses the system, the fewer people in total are able to.

In the end, that'll make it kinda feel like a hostage ransom.. paying them off with CV to get access back to the giveaway..
But, y'know, ransoms work because they're desirable for those involved in them to follow through on.
So yeah, it's hard to note the real gain-to-loss of the situation at just a glance.

Well, I guess it ends up boiling down to the preferences of cg, in this instance, since the matter itself is subjective enough that it should be fine to go with whatever he decides on it, without complaint.
Seeing as Shobo seems to solo handle the bundle list, I imagine that's something you'd need to poke cg through support tickets about, if you want to ensure he gives it any consideration.

Yes, a few person would net on the others have the chance to even get something, really not an example would be healthy to enforce. From my viewpoint (already ownd the game, enters barely any games, doesn't care about CV) I don't really care someone netting on it while others will be happy, but not everyone would be happy with it. Even I'm not sure it's a good way to do it, but I think with some limitiations it would worth a few minutes thinking for CG. Even just by limiting the max amounts of a game to give away to 2-3 would make hoarding of the games irrelevant. Even if it would apply for each free game, I don't really think that 3-5$CV at each free game would have too much of an impact. (But it's questionable, how would it affect rerolls if everyone would be allowed to give away 2, or if there would be a limitation to "good" games, where and how would be the line drawn)

Highly unlikely, for any foreseeable future. In the meantime, the trade value will only continue to depreciate.
I'd advise trying to trade it- if the OP can manage to trade it for two Monthly games, they might just about break even on money spent, and benefit from not having had to spend the full monthly cost, besides. So that may be the best option, if no other trade option presents itself.

Trying to hold on to it to bank on it relies on it being investable, and an early iteration big franchise game like that is unlikely to have any investment potential- by the time the game gains any sort of retro appeal for new gamers, it'll have either been bundled, put in another free promotion, or discounted in retail price.

Well, you can still make a nice giveaway event in the forums with it... I don't know, maybe a little screenshot event - nothing super fancy and then give the game to the winner of that :D
Though it doesn't give steamgifts swag like cv, maybe at least people just recognize the good deed and at least whitelist you or something :D

Maybe with the right event you can even find a winner, who actually would enjoy the game and not just let it rot in their library :>

Hm, seeing how quickly events can go south here, I would say that could backlash, too. Some people might say - if OP's wishlist contains only new releases - that giving a 4(?) years old, [free] game "for" brand giveaway-releases is silly - and if that argument breaks on the first page... well... .
Dark Souls may just not be the right game for such an event, but it sounds like a pretty good idea, I remember some people did something like that in the past - at least one of those events seemed to have been quite a success, if I remember correctly.

Edit: I'm embarrassingly slow :D

But also:

getting better odds on winning games that you want is better than CV anyway.. right? =O

sorry for the delay, seems like you got your answer. Indiegala is a bundle site - they got their own giveaway subsite where users can give away games as well. They also allow to give away games which were given away for free before. That's all about it.

If you don't care about CV you could still do a riddle, special event or whatever to give it directly to others. ... or trade it. Your choice :)
