I want to make an animated gif

I don't usually create threads here but since this place is full of friendly people I want to ask something. I decided to start making animated gifs and I have the programas I need: aTube Catcher and VirtualDub.

My problem is I can't find a suitable video format to make it work on VirtualDub( The ones I pick appear with black and white stripes on the video). Any suggestions, tutorials?

photoshop manually, best compression and gives you tons of compression/options
