So yea we know EA got sold and everything but how its the biggest leveraged buyout in gaming history... but honestly i am worried abt the already existing EA games as well as the future releases....
Mostly because, EA now has over $20 BILLION in debt from this deal. And lets be real… they’re not paying that back by making games cheaper. I kinda expect more microtransactions, more DLC, more Ultimate Team packs, more battle passes….
Aaaannnd they’re going private, which means way less transparency. No more public accountability :/ They can make money moves behind closed doors, and we won’t really know until it hits us in-game….
EA already had a rep for squeezing players (Battlefront II loot boxes, anyone?)…. Now with more financial pressure?? pretty much worried every EA game could get even more commercialized... even the older ones.. specially Sims :((
Considering its the studio behind FIFA/EA FC, Sims, Apex, BF series (specially 6.. there are already reports of refunds on BF6 failing), Dragon Age (one of my personal favs), Mass Effect and a ton more... ig everyone is scared EA will lean harder into cash-first design over creative risks...
Thats it for my rant xD over and out!

Also on a side note, apparently here's the steam profile of the prince that bought EA lmfao? XDD https://steamcommunity.com/id/Abdullah_Al_Saud

Is this the beginning of EA: Everything’s an Add-on?
Business as usual with a scarier price tag

So making games more expensive is a real way to get people to keep buying

You want the game with your game? 50% of price as story DLC... Other 50% for 1 year of multiplayer...

Oh, what does the game include by default? Well, start screen?

The acquisition won't be finalized til 2027, so it's likely business as usual for awhile. I expect that they'll be putting most of the investment into sports games starting next year, more so than they already are now. The Star Wars license is likely going to be a huge deal to them as well. They likely will do a Star Wars Battlefront 2 Remastered with new content and features and if that does well then Battlefront 3 will likely be on the table.

I did. TBH it looks as if after 12 years someone hacked into it and started entering random giveaways - except they're also doing random giveaways, so it doesn't make sense... Also I have no idea if it's possible to log into SG without going through steam first, so it's all just weird at this point. Prince or not.

My personal prediction is that they're gonna go even harder on prioritizing only the franchises that make bank and abandon the smaller series altogether, and maybe also the ones that haven't been doing all that well recently. I'm getting to terms with the reality that I'll likely never see a third Mirror's Edge game, and wouldn't be surprised at all if Need for Speed is over too.

I wouldnt be worried about propaganda much. We are getting this anyway.
What worries me more is consolidation of entertainment for Sauidis. They are throwing money at everything and having everything based around them.

We arleady see it in sporting events - soccer, F1, probably eventually WRC, WRX. From one point of view they are pumping money into the industry, from second point of view they are as far from democracy as one gets. The moral grounds are questionable without even worrying about propaganda.

In the case of EA, if they also get now access and rights to EA sports games, then they pretty much can monopolize e-sports by throwing bunch of money at it and have all the sporting events happening in their country.

FIFA (or EA FC now, great name) obviously carries them financially, depending on how much time they have to pay this debt and how high the interest is, they could do it, but they would need a couple bangers along the way, and I highly doubt a new mass effect game (especially after this last one) or any other IP they have, new or old, would make a fraction of that. Might be also time for hazelight to find a new publisher as well

Yeah with numbers like billions, barely any non-liveservice game will be able to bring in even close of billions.
You'd have to sell over 34-40 million copies of $69.99 game - considering some of them would be on sale and Valve/Sony/MS takes 30%.

According to Wikipedia for best selling games you'd have to be Pokemon Blue/Red, CoD MW (og) or even Breath of the wild Zelda type of cultural hit to be that. ME aint gonna do that. Or dead space. Or any non-sports title EA has.. and thats ok. Or would be, if they werent in debt now. Oh well

some games here surprise me a lot, phasmophobia for even being on the list, human fall flat for selling 55 million (even though there has been like 3 or 4 giveaways for thousands of copies) and stardew valley for selling the same as Modern Warfare did, that was a pretty interesting read :)

My guess is they'll promote GaaS (games as a service) even more because that's making them the most money. Personally, I'm not overly exposed with my EA account holding a handful of games but I worry about possible privacy violations and an even bolder move to monetize every aspect of their franchises in a most exploitative way.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

From a business standpoint it makes sense.... like recurring revenue, constant engagement nd long term monetization. But as a player its definitely concerning... It feels like we’re being nudged more and more into ecosystems designed to extract value rather than provide by not just EA but other franchises too... Privacy violations is a huge concern too :(

The fact they're leveraged doesn't actually mean anything.

Steam charges 30% from devs despite being a private company which certainly has no debt(they're almost printing money). Epic has much lower fees, gives away titles and loses money left and right. Of course, they're in vastly different situations but you shouldn't infer that they'll try to fix their financial situation by raising prices

Saudis are trying to divest from oil & into different markets. They are not concerned about profits. Nobody building a
desert ski resort in the middle of nowhere on a trillion-dollar project is concerned about profits

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, EA has to find 20 millions of dollars to pay for being sold (thanks to leveraged buyout), so I guess they'll die like tons of others leveraged-buyout companies that have to sell assets and IPs to cover the cost of their own purchase.
That or Saudis will eat that cost by requiring each game to be an advertisement for them...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

True... but if it leads to EA offloading some IPs, maybe we’ll see some of them handled with more care elsewhere. Silver lining?? maybe haha XD

Worst case, the old EA games are out there. I honestly don't have much hope for this deal. BUT, at the cost of getting some hate for saying this, maybe this could be an opportunity for the dev teams belonging to EA to actually be allowed to make the games they wanted instead of doing things to please the shareholders ( not going to happen cause then how can they make money ,ha) And with this deal the prince should in theory have the rights for all EA games right? That's quite a lot of ways to make money with their sport games and Sims alone.
Also weren't the Saudis investing in eSports? They could also gain quite a lot with this holding the monopol over sport games.
And if things go well, then things go well . shrugs

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Aaaah agreed... If the dev teams get more creative freedom away from shareholder pressure we might actually see some fresh games that are like passion driven instead of money driven.. But then again as someone here mentioned... acc to the Saudi laws any games with lgbtq and such representation, released or unreleased might be in danger because technically its still illegal... Ig its a wait and see approach

Considering it's been acquired by the Saudi's and Trumps son in law, I'd say the future for EA looks like shit in many forms and you should avoid any game that comes from them once the transfer happens in 2027.

I'm expecting more and pushier microtransactions, loss of certain studios/games(kinda deserved after Dragon Age slop Bioware) and shadier practices.

Also in OP's main post, there ain't no way that's the guy.
