More than 850,000 users on this site are Level 0. This means they haven't created a single giveaway yet (at least not for a game that wasn't already given away for free). Now, I highly recommend creating giveaways for the warm fuzzies, but even if that's not appealing enough there's another good reason. It provides access to many more giveaways and improves your odds of winning.

It may sound complex or expensive to reach Level 1, but don’t fret. I'm assuming here that you already have some games on Steam but that for whatever reason you can't afford a $1 bundle. All you need to do is this:

  1. Play your Steam games that drop Trading Cards. An easy way to find these games is to use Lorenzo Stanco’s excellent Steam Library Filters, enter your Steam ID, and then use the Trading Cards filter. You can also use Steam Idle Master to get the cards quicker (google it).
  2. Sell your cards. If you use Steam inventory helper extension for Chrome browser you can use the "Instant Sell for..." button to quickly liquidate the cards in your Steam Inventory into dollars in your Steam Wallet. If you're not in a hurry "Quick Sell for..." to get a better price. You may also want to try this script which is recommended for selling all cards.
  3. Go to steamdb.info Sales page, Special Promotion section and click Price to sort the sales, listing the cheapest games at the top. Currently there are games like "The Slaughtering Grounds" going for $0.14 and "Escape Machines" and "Flesh Eaters" for $0.15. If you have enough money in your Steam Wallet, be nice and choose a game with better rating (check the rightmost column). "Star Savior" for example, currently costs $0.79 and has a rating of 81% from hundreds of users.
  4. Once you decide on a game, create a new giveaway for it. If the game is on sale, make sure the giveaway ends while the game is still on sale. To be on the safe side, you may want to pick a game which is cheap even when not on sale. Ok, back to the giveaway creation. Select Gift and continue as normal (see the FAQ for details). Mention in the giveaway description that you'll send a friend invite to the winner over Steam and will deliver the game as a gift. Edit: Because of changes to how gifts from the Steam store work you should also limit the giveaway to regions that are within 10% of the price you're paying. You can look for the game on isthereanydeal.com and use the Compare Regions screen to check pricing in other areas. A safe and easy alternative is to limit the giveaway only to your own country, but then it won't be accessible to most users on this site.
  5. Once the giveaway is finished and you have a winner, add them on Steam and purchase the game. After you add the game to the cart select Purchase as a Gift, then select the winner from your list of friends and complete the purchase.
  6. As soon as the winner checks the Received checkbox here on SG, you'll complete your first giveaway and will become Level 1 and a contributing member of this community. Isn't that nice? :-)

Good Luck!

Mini on-going event

If you're a Level 0 user who can show you don't have market access (and therefore can't use the guide below) and if you never traded, let me know. I'll be happy to send you a spare key to create your first giveaway. Offer is limited to the first 5 users who reply to this post and meet the criteria (and are not rule breakers). Reply to this comment.

Edit: As several people have mentioned below, the guide is only applicable to Steam users who have access to the market (basically anyone who spent $5 or more on Steam). If you don't have access to the market see this excellent post by Nokkenbuer about alternative solutions, such as getting games on TremorGames or using a prepaid card on Steam to get access to the market.

"More than 800,000 users on this site are Level 0."
Registered users. Not active ones.

"It provides access to a lot more giveaways"
Yes.

"and improves your odds of winning."
By a difference that won't matter much.
1 to a 2000 chance instead of a 1 to 3000. Something like that.
Sometimes you cant even see a difference, look at the "entries":
https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/LagQU/pony-island
https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/agxhb/pony-island
https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/hNla0/pony-island
https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/u0LHz/pony-island
https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/2JDFQ/pony-island
https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/4M14j/pony-island

In practice entering the giveaway multiple times gives you better chances than 1 level instead of a 0.
Chance depends on the how many people have entered. But that count will be over 1000 just by a game being popular. With level 1 or without.

The only reason to reach Level 1 is just to be polite and give something back.
(or just dump something that you got from some kind of bundle subscription.)

The last two points are actually related. There are many GA creators that avoid L0, but do create L1 giveaways. This means that the same game can be rare in L0 giveaways, but not as rare in L1 giveaways. Depending on how big the gap is, the difference in odds can be anywhere between negligible to significant.

Pony Island is not rare now that it's been in a Tier 1 bundle, but it was far less common earlier. If you want to get more useful data, you need to research that period (if you have the time).

Hey, I'm new on this site and I was wondering how many points do you need to level up? I see that different games give a different amount of points in order for you to level up, but how many points do you need for each level? Will one giveaway get me to level 1 regardless of the price of the game? Will games that are currently on sale give the points of their full price or of their current sale price? I searched the FAQ but I fail to find any answer (all I could see is that each level requires double points, but it doesn't tell you how many do you need for level 1).

Any game that can be gifted will get you to Level 1, and only games that were given away for free cannot be gifted, so it's pretty easy.

Good guide, I'm sure there are many users who weren't aware of the selling cards aspect of Steam.

As some people have mentioned TremorGames, I'd love to advertise another way of earning money for playing games:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mcoins.applike&hl=en

This app gives you coins for playing apps/games (or just having them open), which can be traded in for PayPal credit.
Personally I've been using it since October last year and have been getting $0.50 every 1.5 days.

As a new user you start off with 4.444 coins and it takes 4.999 coins to get your first $0.50, so it's easily testable imo.
You should have it after an hour max if you play each of the recommended apps for 10 minutes at first.

It's not an amazing amount, but it's free money, and I prefer it because you definitely feel like you're making good progress.
Also, it's nice to always be able to get every $1 bundle or save up for the really good ones, for practically nothing. :)

Unless you're in a big hurry, you should press Quick sell and not Instant sell tho, the difference can be huge. Like getting 1 cent for your card vs 20.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

One typical case where one may be in a hurry is when a game just got bundled and the prices are going to crash. The sooner you get rid of the card the higher the value you'll get.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you're buying bundles you'll very likely end up with doubles you can give away here as well. Just checking what the market looks like before selling too cheaply just makes sense in any case.

Then few lines in...
"Once you select the game, go to Steam and use your card-earned money to purchase it. Add To Cart --> Purchase as Gift --> select Store the gift in my inventory to send later --> Continue -> [x] I agree --> Purchase."

Uhu........... that is indeed not spending money right there... kek
I probably buy these games with cows or something i guess....... lol

There are shit-tons of free games you can get that drop cards... farm them, sell the cards on the market, buy a cheap game on Steam. Didn't cost you a dime indeed. only a bit of time.

Money is money it doesnt matter how its created, besides you can sell cards, buy GO/TF2 keys and sell thoose for paypal money...
I never said it will cost you money, but money is involved so the title is misleading if u ask me

Most people don't consider Steam balance as actual money, as you can't use it for anything but to purchase games (and a few items of hardware) on this specific store. If you do, then I see why you'd disagree with this thread.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Offcourse I consider is as actual money, because money = money, no matter how its created or noted down, its still money... or are you paying everything on steam with cowshit or anything? XD lol..
Its not caus its on steam and YOU think its not worth anything, it doesnt mean it is... besides if u sell cards, buy GO/TF2 keys and sell thoose for paypal then u are actually bringing the money out steam right in to your pockets... if that aint money for you then please, send it to my paypal I can always use some more :)

You can also sell your other virtual and non-virtual things you own to turn them into money, it doesn't mean that at their previous state they are money, but beside that, I think you're missing the whole point of this thread. To spell it out: It's a guide for people who can't level up because they don't have games to give and cannot buy them for one reason or another, but they do have unplayed games in their library.

What is the point of getting free lv1 anyway? They're just not treated differently from lv0 by ppl that do level restricted giveaways?

The main reason people would want to level up to L1 is that it would give them access to many more giveaways. These are the current L1 giveaways.

just idea, if you gifts them spare key to create their 1st GA, yes they will level up to 1, but they will still unable to access steam market due limited user accounts, and can't improve more.
But if you create an GA with steam gift (not key) and sent the game to winner by using steam gifts function then their account will be unlocked and have full access to market for trade, etc.
This way they can playing games from their winning to get trading card, and then selling it to steam market and later they can bought games itself for sg giveaway to level up more.

I'm not sure if thats because i add steam wallet, probably not becuz i did check after add 5$ voucher and still locked..

Anyone can test more? 8:57 AM 😃 i'm too lazy to create another account right now lol , nvm i will check again.. will back soon

Since no-one responded to that proposal ("mini-event") in the OP, let's make it even simpler and remove the prerequisites:

Isn't this defeating the purpose of levels ?
I mean, I understand the thread, they don't have money but they are ready to put some efforts in this, they earn it in another way. But giving them the level 1, just like that ?

I'm limiting this to a few users only, to see if the previous additional requirements were the barrier to get "applicants" (and of course will stand by my word to provide keys).

Le question: since you're giving a key directly, what's stopping people from just using it?

I'd ask for a giveaway key, but I got a 4-pack of something for that anyway...and I don't really need anything else since I'm a leecher :P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The only thing is stopping them from using the key themselves is that it would look bad, and looking bad is not advisable on a forum where people blacklist for much less.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It seems people don't really blacklist as much (unfortunately) But I guess that's true, not that it would completely stop anyone.
Welp, we'll see how it goes anyway.

(If, again, nobody asks for one, you can go ahead and give it to me for a giveaway)

This was probably mentioned already but this would not work for users from "cheaper" countries. Many games sold in my country are cheaper (though a couple others countries are even cheaper) and it's usually impossible for me to gift these games to anyone outside my country. When the inventory gifting was still in effect, I couldn't gift any games at all even if my country's price was among the most expensive for those titles (there are a few of those shockingly). I suppose region restricted giveaways are an option.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Region restricted giveaways are definitely an option. If they're created as Public GAs there's no need to even have a minimum of 5 entries to get CV, you just need a winner (so practical minimum is 1 entry).

Thanks for the inspiration. I forgot about the trading cards thing. I decided to just sell some of them as suggested and start a giveaway. It's surprising how much these silly digital pictures are worth.

With the amount of games I've been able to buy in the past, I'm probably sitting on a goldmine of cards. I just find them so useless I can't be arsed to even farm them with an afk method.

You don't get any levels for games which have been given away for free to the public (like Psychonauts on Humble Bundle, World War III: Black Gold on dlh and Planets Under Attack also on dlh).

Comment has been collapsed.

From what I understand, there could be a couple reasons why you haven't gotten points for your giveaways:

  1. The games you put in a giveaway were at some point FREE, so you don't get points.
  2. The person who won and received the game did not click 'received' so the giveaway was never marked as complete and no points were awarded.
  3. The giveaway has not ended yet.
If none of those things apply to you, then I don't know why, and maybe someone else has a suggestion. ^_^"
Sorry, it sucks that you didn't get any points. :/
6 years ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Every game you've given away was given away for free to the public at some point. You do not receive any points for giving away a game that was previously available for free to the public.

This is unfortunate if you did not get those games for free, but is necessary to prevent abuse of the system by people trying to level up by giving away multiple copies of free games.
