I guess it will become f2p at some point, they're just trying to hold off the inevitable for a bit, squeeze the last drops before it goes dry.

Perception of worth for most people stems from a (hefty) price tag. Sad and stupid, yet true.

They can still nag some more purchases next sale. The player influx will reanimate for awhile before urgent need of f2p.

Smart move actually

In addition to what other people said, by giving it out like this instead of making it fully F2P, the devs can make some small profits off the trading cards.
An F2P game won't give card drops unless you put money into it, but these free licenses of paid games do. It's a clever loophole.
