aside from the graphite/lead breaking inside a pencil, and the ink going everywhere..both also have smudges
I picked pen, the reason being is if you write something down with both of them, after many years, it is most likely what is written in pencil will fade and the pen doesn't as much (although it does after a super long time)

All of my Staedtlers, Pentels, Caran d'Aches and Rotrings scream (mechanical) pencil.
(Although fountain pens will never lose their vintage cachet, but ball points need to die).
I'm especially fond of my Pentel Graph Gear 1000 and Staedtler 925
