Razer Blackwidow Tournament Edition is the one you are looking for if your BF wants a keyboard without a numeric pad.

Hmm.. I'm not sure he wants that keyboard, I think that's the one he didn't want. Not sure why, I think a friend of his bought a Black Widow and was disappointed by it. I can be wrong though.
But thank you for the tip, I will read up on the different Razer keyboards. :)

Many, many people have been disapointed by that keyboard. Mine developed a fault in the cable and I'm currently waiting for a replacement but if I could I would exchange it for something else. The amazon reviews are full of people who had dead keys out of the box or other wierder problems. Wish I had paid attention to them.

For some reason I thought you needed a telekinesis keyboard... Then I thought, if you have telekinesis you dont need a keyboard. Unless you are developing telekinesis. If so, I heard the kinect can do this. Or maybe this is the keyboard you are not looking for.

Buying a mechanical keyboard without testing the switches isn't that smart. Has your boyfriend told you what kind of switches he wants? Choosing the right switch type is the only important thing when buying a mechanical keyboard. The other features of the keyboard don't really matter. Here's a guide on switches. I'm currently using Cherry MX Browns, which I find great. Tactile, but now very loud. The only other switches I've tried are Cherry MX Reds and I didn't like them at all. Typing with them was awful.
There are a few manufacturers, who have "traditional" looking mechanical keyboards. Filco and Ducky for example. They also have good build quality.

I bought him a keyboard about two years ago, a mechanical one as well. It was the SteelSeries 6v2 or something and he loves it. But he would rather have a tenkeyless at the moment.
I think he's said that he wants Cherry MX Browns, he seems to be very content with those. I have been looking at Ducky keyboards and I think it's a choice between any of those and the CM QuickFire one. I'll read up on switches first though, but I am pretty sure he said brown would be the best for him. :)
Thank you for the help!

The Filco Majestouch-2 is certainly one of the best mechanical keyboards available, although it is also obviously a bit pricey and doesn't have any fancy "gaming" features (which is a plus in my book).
Regarding the switches, I would suggest either browns or blues for both gaming and programming.

Get a Filco or something without the gimmicky overpriced backlit stuff.

Backlit would be nice but he doesn't really look at his keyboard when he types, so it's not any priority luckily. Maybe just a plus. But it can't glow too much because then he'll be annoyed by it. :)
Filco seems to be one of the top recommendations. Along with Ducky and QuickFire. Darn, this is hard :D

I am very happy with my Cooler Master Storm Trigger, and if you want a more compact design their Quickfire Rapid would seem to fit the bill nicely. Cooler Master sensibly offer their keyboards in a range of switches so you should be able to find it with Cherry MX Browns.

There is more than some, but not what I would call excessive amounts. The Trigger I use has CMStorm in the top right corner, and a backlit logo in the top left. The windows keys use the CMStorm logo instead of the Windows logo too, a bit gratuitous but no big deal. On the Quickfire Rapid it is much the same with the absence of backlighting and the addition of Quickfire written on the spacebar. You cam find good pics on their website or elsewhere online.

Personally I have Ducky Shine 2 and use Red Cherry MX switches but for somebody who does other stuff too, Brown or Blue could be better. Blue just sounds terrible. Also Ducky Shine 2 comes in many backlight colors, personally I have blue. There's also red, green, pink, purple, orange and white I think.

try cm storm quickfire stealth with brown switch... have tactile feedback like blue switch but minus the loudness... red switch is good for gamers but maybe bad for programming...

I use a G710+ but it has the numeric pad. Happy birthday to him though and good luck chosing!

Hey SG:ers!
My boyfriend's birthday is coming up and he's been wanting a mechanical tenkeyless (without the numeric pad) gaming keyboard for a long time. I am finally gonna get him one, but I feel a bit lost. I would love some recommendations, and maybe some tips on what to look for when it comes to mechanical ones. I know there are different types, but I am mostly looking for what suits a gamer that works with programming.
Maybe I'll even get one for myself! Although I am pretty satisfied with my G19..
Oh, I almost forgot, here's a giveaway!
