I was SL190 or so when I completed DS2 without farming anywhere.
I was SL60 or something like that when I completed DS1 without farming. I missed a few important places but if you add them you should be around SL80.

In DS2 I could fast roll with a decent armor, had huge amount of hp and stamina, high dex and str. In DS1 everything was just as it's supposed to be. The only thing I hate about ds2 is difficulty.

If you're a member of the Company of Champions covenant (you take more dmg, you do less dmg) you can still farm enemies without them disappearing. That doesn't include mobs that are only killable once per playthrough.

What do you like about Dwarf Fortress? I'd never heard of it so I had to look it up. Reading about it reminded me of J.R.R. Tolkien, who developed epic backstory for Lord of the Rings, complete with invented languages, geography and mythology. Is it the massive level of complexity at multiple levels and the unpredictable consequences of these things interacting that you like?

From the two games you mentioned, it seems like you really appreciate the reward of learning something that makes the ongoing job easier. From what I've read, Dwarf Fortress certainly gives you that. However, inherent in this is the reason I wouldn't rank it as the greatest ever game: the lack of an intuitive interface. For my money, the greatest game of all time should output data (e.g. graphics and sounds) in a form that easily allows meaningful interpretation of what is going on, and it should also incorporate an intuitive, or at least easily learned, control system. Dwarf Fortress appears to have a magnificent underlying mechanism, but apparently, the interface is too significant a barrier for many. I also see that it is still in beta, with the current version being 0.43.05 and Bay 12 describing it as a work in progress, which also isn't in its favour.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Is it the massive level of complexity at multiple levels and the unpredictable consequences of these things interacting that you like?

I can answer for myself, yes. It's probably the most fun I've ever had with an "unfinished" game. It is in a perpetual state of development, yet it already offers so much for so little. It helps, a lot, that I have been a zealous champion of Dwarves for many years, and that the developer is truly interested in making the most uniquely challenging and still fun experience for the players. It's also rightfully beloved for the community's involvement in the game and that the Adams' brothers take what they say seriously.
I've never enjoyed "losing" in a game more.

Cool! It certainly sounds finished enough for them to give it a 1.0 version number and declare it official - they have said that it is 10 years since it has been released (which is when most people do that). I guess they just want to keep being really active with development. It does certainly sound interesting and I've downloaded the game but will save installation for a time that I feel motivated to really put some time into it.

I haven't played a lot yet because I was kind of overwhelmed by the complexity but just in case you didn't know (or it's not automatically included) there are texture packs that turn the Asci graphic the game normally uses into icons that are a bit easier to recognize and more pleasant to look at ;)

That sounds like something I'd appreciate. I don't mind the idea of ASCII graphics, but it sounds like there's a bit much variety/detail in this game for them to do a good job of representing what when they're trying to.

...So what you're saying is most people on PC are pirates.

You're saying this on a website for STEAM gifts. You are insulting the PC gaming community as a whole on a PC gaming website...granted one that provides evidence to the point "PC gamers don't like to pay for their games"(fun fact: Most people like to get more things they like for less effort, this is why computers(including consoles) actually exist).

Comment has been collapsed.

Please keep in mind that I said many. I didn't say most and I most certainly didn't say all.
I'm also saying this on a website that probably has the highest percentage of non-pirates in the PC gaming community.
I'm not trying to insult anyone just trying to explain why with the combination of Piracy and "I'll buy it when it's 1$" mentality (refer to my next comment for that) PC has become the neglected stepchild and many big titles are just lazy console ports.

But if anybody feels insulted enough by my thought on that matter they are free to blacklist me if they wish to do so.

He's not far off, DS barely get ported to PC - I think the reason was that they didn't thought that there'll be any demand for a game like that (Japanese game industry trying to understand the west, GG) and partial reason can be the piracy as well. In Japan PC as a gaming platform is rare, the country's gaming is incredibly console-based. Given how easy is to pirate on PC compared to consoles and their lack of experience about western gaming, it really can be a strong secondary reason as well.
(+ who cares what Sundance says about gamers, even if he means is that way (he doesn't) ? When we say how terrible things people capable of after watching the news, we won't get randomly offended that we're people as well and we wouldn't start a shootout or something. There's no need ever to get that identified with any group)

"Given how easy is to pirate on PC compared to consoles and their lack of experience about western gaming"
Well, it's certainly a true comparison. Actually, that's a good point about "western gaming", too. Our gaming culture is probably more rooted in the personal computer culture in a lot of ways(because if your country gets to have Jobs(Apple computers originally were the ones that played more games) AND Gates, you shall take advantage). However, you got me reading about this subject, and according to (the best source ever) Wikipedia, Japan actually did have a pretty big PC gaming market despite the NES being an early success.

However, they also apparently picked up "mobile gaming" culture first. YOU ARE THE ONES WHO MADE SIMCITY BUILDIT! AHHHH!

What was I talking about again?

Devil Daggers also lacks in graphic quality and gameplay depth, by comparison.
But that aside, and speaking only from experience of the first game, I can agree that the rolling is clumsy, but I haven't had any of the other problems you noted below [post DS-Fix]. Then again, from what I understand [and as stated on the mod's Nexus page], DS-Fix doesn't always work- so you may just be unlucky in that regard.

Dark Souls challenges you with its difficulty of gameplay.

I don't think that enemies that attack you through walls mean "difficulty" :)
I'm halfway your statement and ambidot's. DS is incredibly broken in many aspects and locations, but it's fairly consistant in that, so technically it's learnable. But when a part of gameplay boils down to remember the spots when you / the enemies can attack something that you shouldn't, that game is really badly done. Can be great fun for people, but it's still an unpolished games with broken parts.

I suppose it depends on your definition of "broken", seeing how many people love the Dark Souls franchise it stands to reason that it's not considered broken in a general sense, though I personally am no fan of the gameplay either. From what I can surmise from the Steam pages, they're different kind of games and you simple prefer one over the other. No point comparing apples to oranges.

If you want to play a work of art, play Unreal Tournament. If there ever was something that could be called a perfect game, this'd be it. Comes with a singleplayer campaign for all your SP needs, a plethora of game modes to play on some of the most balanced maps ever made, and every single gun in it can be used to surprising devastating effect (I can actually hit harder with the BioRifle than the Minigun)

What I usually do is equip the rifle in close-quarters maps (Floating Pyramid and Condemned, that domination map with buildings all around and great music, are the ones I can think of atm), and use the alt fire to charge up the bio-sludge. So whenever I see an enemy I frag immediately, and they die instantly because a fully charged attack is very, very powerful plus you do not need to be 100% accurate, if they step on it they'll still die. And on the other hand I suck with the minigun, I had started my fire on another guy and kept firing at him directly till he ran up to me and Flak Cannon'd me into oblivion ;_;

Though it's a completely different fact that I use neither the BioRifle nor the Minigun that much, Pulse Gun and Flak Cannon are life <3 (and I like the Shock Rifle's shockburst combo, it has a great AoE damage)
