Hi, I just found this site, and have quite a few codes (not bundles) that i'll likely be contributing later on.

Anyway, I was looking at how this site works, and basically people get "points" when others create giveaways. I find this sort of odd...

Points should go to (or more should be given) to the actual giver, than the entire community. (many of which are just trying to get free games...) I'd rather have it so that people giving games are giving to people giving other games, so that both parties win, and no one just gets stuff for nothing. :P Also other ways...

Here's a basic idea to modify the point system:

20-Points = Making your account.

1-Points = Leaving a comment on a giveaway you have entered.

1-Point = Not winning a entered giveaway.

1-Point = Every X Amount of Forum Posts (Contributing to the community)

1-Point = Creating a popular topic of discussion.

1-Point = Every $1000 worth of giveaways. (Example: 200 copies worth $2000 = 2 points for everyone)

X-Points = Points entered in a giveaway could be put in a pot or something, and there could be "point" giveaways.

X-Points = The amount in dollars of games you have given away. (Example: Give $20 Game, get 20 points)

Min. Time for Giveaway = 12 hours, not 1 hour. (Gives everyone a chance, mimics the Diablo 3 AH bid time)

Multiple entries per person.

Entry to giveaways for games you already own. (In my mind, to give to friends if won...I shouldn't be locked out of most

giveaways just because I own a lot of games + the chances of winning are so low it's reasonable)

The ability to donate directly to a "Giver" (Perhaps even reward points for this 1 point per dollar donated)

The ability to donate points to another.

In any case, the main thing is people who are not contributing should not be earning much, while people who are "giving" and those that are actively contributing should be earning much more.

(It would also be nice if there were statistics on your profile: points earned, points spent, $ amount given, giveaways entered, giveaways won, $ amount won, etc.)

Basically how it is now, it's ~$1 per point. (even if it is just an entry)
With the system above, not only would people be more encouraged to create giveaways (because they would get a lot of points to enter in games they don't own) but it would make a system where everyone is gaining points slowly, AND if you contribute by leaving comments, posting on the forums, helping, etc. you will earn more points.

^ But, the people giving games should obviously earn the most "points". It filters out the bad, and creates a lot less entries.

Just feedback, and not meant to be "OMG DO THIS" haha. :)

I like the approach of joining an established website and community and humbly suggesting to completely revolutionize the way it works, dismissing the underlying principles and choices in favor of completely different ones. Brave! :)

Wasn't the purpose...haha, but I can see how it came off that way.

In reality it's a list of ideas, some which might be plausible, and others that are horrible. In which I combined to make a plausible system that may or may not work. (probably not) But the main thing to get across are the smaller points, and to the few the "good ideas" hidden within the many.

Also, as I see it, the point system has been sort of a "test" which means it's up to change, and has changed over time, so suggestions seem like a good idea.

Well, I understand your willingness to reward "givers" instead of leechers, but it seems like the spirit here is to, at least partially, "just give" (obviously private giveaways and contributor thresholds go in a different direction).
What I consider fundamentally wrong is the idea of rewarding activities like forum comments and thanks. Spam and white noise, plus saying thanks because you have to is worthless IMO. Personally I even find the endless list of "thanks" posts under each giveaway annoying, but that's just me.

Changes I would make are rising the 300P limit a bit and give users the chance to buy multiple "tickets" for a single giveaway, so that one can focus on stuff he/she really wants instead of having to spread the credit.

I love how you just waltz into somebody's community and start telling them how to run it. You must be a great person to hang out with irl, always trying to "fix" your friends?

I don't have friends! xD

jk, haha, just a select few, and simply because I like having a couple good friends than many "friends". For me, it's less drama, less time consuming, and more appreciation for one another. These people are typically people that others misjudge or dislike for some reason or another. ^_^

and no I don't try to fix them. haha. I share with them knowledge though. like hey if you do this you can get free games :P but they hardly ever listen. Many people think "free" = illegal or not unmoral.

One time this girl compared "free posters" to "a boyfriend raping his girlfriend because she cheated on him"...she never spoke to me again...there's many odd people out there. I'm typically isolated. :)

Leaving a comment on a giveaway you have entered. - then you leave the GA and get the points. Pointless farming. And you could spend points first to have 0 of them to avoid site taking them away.

Every X Amount of Forum Posts (Contributing to the community) - encourage pointless spam.

Creating a popular topic of discussion. - Spam once again. Ppl making pointless topics - other ppl spamming in them to gaet comment points, then making even more pointless spam topics to farm even more.

Every $1000 worth of giveaways. (Example: 200 copies worth $2000 = 2 points for everyone) - it's already implemented. You get 5% of public GAs cost.

Points entered in a giveaway could be put in a pot or something, and there could be "point" giveaways. - don't even understand.

The amount in dollars of games you have given away. (Example: Give $20 Game, get 20 points) - Encourage bundle-farming. for 1$ spent on bundles you can get like 30-50 points.

12 hours, not 1 hour. (Gives everyone a chance, mimics the Diablo 3 AH bid time) - punishing active community members.

Multiple entries per person. - why?

Entry to giveaways for games you already own. (In my mind, to give to friends if won...I shouldn't be locked out of most - encouraging entering into GAs for personal profit - you can win something and resell it on ebay or sth.

giveaways just because I own a lot of games + the chances of winning are so low it's reasonable) - once again - don't understand.

The ability to donate directly to a "Giver" (Perhaps even reward points for this 1 point per dollar donated) - exploit possibility. You make fake account, enter private GiveAway, win it and donate 300 points. And so on and on.

The ability to donate points to another. - Ppl creating countless alt accounts just to donate points and enter more GAs they should.

ALL IN ALL _ MOST OF YOUR IDEAS ARE VERY STUPID AND EASILY EXPLOITABLE.

I do not want to say anything bad about your ideas, but not one of them will work... You want to promote pure oligarchy while SG is better off with its "democracy". If your ideas get implemented, people will enter a single giveaway in a month probably, which will decrease the chance of winning to the bare minimum. Just enjoy the system as it is because it is the best that can be done at this moment.

Also, Registered 3 hours ago... Chill, man. People who have been here for 6 months or more think over their ideas for improvement while you simply come and shoot out some mindless thoughts of yours. Chill.

Welcome :) I think the best way to get to know how this site works is to stick around a bit longer. You've registered 3 hours ago and I doubt that after 3 hours, 5 giveaways entered and 0 giveaways (though I did read you will contribute later on), you have a good understanding of what should be improved ;)

Personally, I am pretty okay with the system as it is. I can't get through my points anyway; even if I spend 100+ points on entering giveaways, within one day I am probably twice back up to 300. Also, to stop people who don't contribute from entering giveaways, you can make private and group giveaways and add contributor value to a giveaway. So if you want to, you can make sure that only certain people, like contributors, can enter a giveaway.

Oh, by the way. In case you have not noticed yet you will get reduced contributor value for the DLC as they've been bundled. Sorry if you had gone through that explanation already. But just in case. Bundle contribution is capped at 30$ or 25% of your non-bundled contribution. Whatever is more. :)

I think I prefer my idea of removing contribution value and replacing it with games/dlc given.

1 decade ago

Why remove contributor value? Why does the # of games/DLC need to replace it?

You have 6 games given away; if I create a giveaway for Antichamber and want you to be able to enter the giveaway but at the same time increase your odds of winning I can create a contributor giveaway with a $50 requirement. If I had to do the same by using # games/dlc given I'd have to set it to >5 and you'd also be competing against people who'd created 6 giveaways of 1P DLC.

Moreover, if you merely add the "games/dlc given" metric to what we already have, you can do cool things like set ">$50 contributor value AND <2 giveaways created" in order to reward people who have a higher average giveaway value.

We're rewarding people for the value of their investment (lol bundles), and not the quality of the games being given. I can buy Max Payne for $15 off Amazon and give away a few copies to massively increase my contribution value. I could've exploited Gala Store's $1 bundles and add ~$500 to my account value.

I proposed once before and added that SGift's wishlist could tie into the system, so that if a collective wishlist game is given away (say, Antichamber), then there would be bonuses, or niceties. Currently, if you gave away Antichamber, you'd be getting $25 value. You can get almost double the amount with $2 in Shadow Harvest.

Also, game values decrease over time and cg hasn't implemented a database to track previous RRPs, so I can't see your last line working out long-term. I'd love extra restrictions too, but eh, too much complexity does no-one good. Especially the casual users and newcomers.

Hey Desolater.

While your intentions with these ideas are good (at least i hope they are), it's very easy to exploit them, or they have some things that can easily cause trouble.

The idea you're suggesting also suggests the idea that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, as well as the fact that people will stop giving away games for the sake of generosity, instead they'll just do it for greed purposes, creating this vicious circle, where whoever does not contribute with a game every 1 month will probably just screw himself up. That is not the main idea of this site.

The 1 comment=1 point would only drive users to spam the forums even more than usual, possibly destroying any possibility of a well formulated debate, light hearted jokes or just hidden giveaways. As of now the comments each user has only shows how active he is in the community, which is fine for me.

1 Hour giveaways are made for a reason, the giveaway creator has the freedom to choose when and how long the giveaway will last, they also serve as a way to limit entries.

Multiple entries. Again, the idea of the site is giving everyone an equal opportunity to win a game, specially when it comes to public giveaways.

We are all trying to get free games here, that will never change, changing the rules to fit that idea would come a bit closer to what PlayBlink is at the moment.

Hello Desolator. Welcome to SteamGifts. Hope you'll enjoy your time here.

Personally, I disagree with all your suggestions, especially with the ones that gives the gifters more benefits, and the one that allows you to enter games you already own. I still respect your opinions, but I'd never want to see them being applied here.
