So I finished a handful of public GAs, odd enough I found 5 users who enter a lot of them within the last couple of hours with generic thanks messages... my first reaction was to blacklist ALL of them! (most of them were level 1 with poor ratios)

So if most of them had way more wins than sent and comment the same generic message on each GA...THE BOTS ARE HERE! But.. one is level 3, another has 2 more sents than won, another is even... so this makes me think that they are just regular people with a script that automatically comments a generic thanks message for every GA that they enter.

So in the end I removed all but one from my blacklist because that dude has not only sent annoying generic messages, but has a ratio of nearly 0.05, and I can tolerate either a horrible ratio or an annoying generic messages but not that combo.

What do you think... am I paranoid with bots?

Update:

If you didn't read everything or misunderstood me, writing "thank you" might get repetitive but I don't blacklist people who do that, using lazy scripts to post the same boring message hundreds of time on the other hand is quite condemnable. Bots gimme goosebumps tbh! wink wink

Yeah, there are lots of bots / scripts that enter into stuff depending on some criteria.

One time I had winner who had already base game and entered anyway - I explicity stated to NOT enter for DLCs + it was GA for my region so description was in my native (and his) language. But he has 600 wins and 200 sent - for me it's clear bot.

Yeah, I barely do public GA's anymore. Not just because of the bots, but also because of all the people with bad ratio's (which isn't necesarily a bad thing, as long as they give away something for every couple of wins).

just kidding, im not sad because a few days ago i thought ill have to get a new mobo + cpu + ram + possibly power supply, and it turns it was just faulty ram and mobo so i saved tons of $ (or as i like to look at it, i earned $ because i already spent them in my head so yeah).

Accusing someone in the autojoin group for auto joining giveaways is the most pathetic thing I've ever heard, I recognize many of my friends in that group and I know they're not using the script.

It's nearly the same as claiming that every black man is a thief. Jumping on such conclusions is simply put wrong and stupid. Judge people based on what they're doing, not based on what you think they are.

True, but it's like stating that everybody who agrees on gay marriages is automatically a gay, which is just truly wrong and without any logic. Imagine cg banning all members of that group on SG, based only on the fact that they're members. How stupid it would be?

I don't shoot anyone here, I don't care that much because I never was in that group and I have no reason to defend it, I just can't understand logic that some people are following. My hope for humanity reached critical point, soon my brain won't be able to handle it anymore if it keeps following that way, and that would have dramatic effects.

I like to thank in every GA I enter, but I'm starting to think it might not be the best idea I use almost every-time this "Thanks! :-)" I don't use any script to enter in GA's but I do use <Ctrl+C> <Ctrl+V>, but come on I don't understand what is wrong in that it's really preferable to not comment at all?... :-/

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I'm basically the same way. I don't copy and paste, but the majority of my messages are just a variation of "Thanks! :)", "Thank you for the giveaway! :)", or "Thanks for the chance! :)". (I don't write thanks if the description asks not to, though.) I'll mix it up if something in the description sticks out to me or I'm really excited at the chance of getting the game, but that's what I use for the most part. The problem is, I'm afraid that I appear like a bot to others because of that, but I would feel like a total jerk if I never thanked anyone unless I won (I mean, I'm thankful just for the chance, someone else is willing to share a copy of a game with random strangers instead of someone they know. How nice is that?). So, I just don't really know what to do :/

Yeah, I think I'm going to start doing what I saw someone else here mention. I just will either post something other than thanks (or about how thankful I am that they're giving away a game that I really want that is almost never given away) or I won't post anything (but I will say thanks if I win). It seems to be the best scenario, honestly. You get rid of people thinking you're a bot, and I'm sure the creators enjoy that more because it's more like an actual conversation.

For me the problem isn't thanking on every single GA...
It's the same exact message 20 times...
When you do as many GAs as I do, you can tell when people are reading the messages and you can see that someone entered the same message over and over again with no variation... Variation at least lets me know that you've put in some effort...
I mean, I spend a lot of effort and money making the GAs and spreading them all over SG in various groups and for the public...
So if the message isn't gonna be original, I'd prefer ONE message thanking me for all of them, not 20 messages with the exact same text..
Why? Cause I participate in forum discussions and now I'm just getting my stuff spammed off the notification window.

Perhaps I'm strange... who knows....

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Note I understand your position perfectly, but blacklist (and I'm not saying that you do BL ppl) someone just because that someone thanks every GA with the same string of text (I for example almost always use "Thanks! :-)") seems to me a bit excessive, but for now I'm just not saying anything when there isn't any description, and when there is one that deserves any answer I do answer and thank in the same comment, and of course if I win I always thank to the author even if I have posted a previous comment thanking. :-)

Blacklist first , ask questions later :) There are loads of bots but also people that take the time to write thanks, saying thanks shouldn't be a reason to blacklist, not saying thanks also shouldn't be a reason to blacklist. My suggestion would be a post like this with a sgtools link to a invite only giveaway. That would keep the bots away but it takes more time to do it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah I had a lot of personal thanks message, not a generic "Thank you :)" message copy pasted x5. I never blacklist for not saying thank you though, next time I might do a Sgtools train, but in the end it was just a little annoying and got me a little paranoid, it wasn't a big deal and I only ketp one of the users in my BL, the others walked out of it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I've heard that there are bots that scour the forums too, and what's to stop a bot or script from going through the SGtools verification? Afaik there's no Captcha or other turing test, so either there are already SGT botters or it's a matter of time. I feel like a simple puzzle or image with the giveaway url would be better for stopping bots, until SGTools adds a captcha or other bot protection.

Could be true but the ones using bots will have a crappy ratio and cv and other things you can pick on, you can always defend against that. you can also do puzzles on ITH , even simple ones for a human are not simple for a bot.

Yeah me neither, but I had a long time since I didn't made a lot of public GAs and this kinda creeped me out, I'm more used to the quiet and respectful higher level crowd I guess, never a copy pasted message. I like when people say thanks and get kind of sad when nobody does...especially when the winners don't thank me. Ouch. I used to write thank you comments on some giveaways (I never used a bot/script, I wouldn't even know how). But now I typically only say it when I win because of the way some people react negatively to it these days.

or..... people who don't want or have anything in mind to say something different each time ? Someone told me once i was a bot because i enter few of his giveaway in less than 5 sec..... thats pretty dumb since i think most people do the same as me : browsing the giveaway page, open giveaway wich interest you in a tab, then after a few, join them all and depending of the giveaway / descritpion, leave a message or not. The first reason i stopped saying thanks to each giveaway i entered is when they modified the system and made each and every commetn you get on a giveaway, as a notification. I know some people are bothered by that so if it does not look like the gifter want an answer i don't give any unless i win. The second reason is because they are people who will accuse you to be a bot or something and will blacklist you just for that...

I hate when people confuse those two words.

Bot - independent program programmed to do certain things, usually run on servers as a long-live process. ASF uses Bots for cards farming. It's application.
Script - addition to the web browser which makes it easy to automate some usual things. It's addition - script that has to be run through e.g. tampermonkey, or chrome extension.

People use scripts, not bots. ArchiBoT is a bot, and he doesn't join giveaways, he has more important things to do.

And yes, the amount of lazy users joining with script is actually quite noticable. Of course only on public giveaways, because publicly available scripts are too stupid to do anything else.

But major population is still made of lazy users using copy paste

I don't see why someone couldn't (or hasn't) created a bot though, to completely automate giveaway entering. Something completely separate from the browser, that enters either at a certain time or whenever your points replenish.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This is totally possible to do, moreover, I can assure you that somebody DID that already, but if somebody is smart enough to do that, then trust me that he's also smart enough to NOT share that solution with everyone on the internet for free.

For example, I can say that ArchiBoT is able to collect all giveaways and trains posted in discussions, solve some easy istoohardpuzzles (like question are you a bot), hence, even pass SGTools check. But I don't use any of that, I have big fun implementing all of that, because it's like a challenge whether I'm smart enough to code something, but unfortunately I'm still not smart enough to code the exact algorithm that I as a human use for joining giveaways - simple "join all" tactic works for leechers, but when you're active on forums, in lots of private groups, and on lots of whitelists, "join all" tactic is simply non-efficient.

Moreover, I find it extremely pathetic when you join a giveaway without reading description, it's like the minimum you should always do is to read description, as a grattitude for opportunity.

I decreased my thank you on GA's that enter after reading that many people blacklist because of "generic message"

In my opinion I think you are paranoid and if you want to avoid bots just post higher lvl giveaways 4+ lvl
Also for the ratio of won and given games, who knows what might have happened in someones life.

I planned to buy myself Far Cry primal and one gift version for GA in the first month as a thank you for 4 won GA but due to life crazy events I won't be getting paid in this month nor the second month :(

Basically moral of the story is don't blacklist people without actually having a good reason (being rude towards you, scamming you, fighting with you and so on) cause you never know what someone is going through or how they are doing.
Rather focus on white listing nice and good people who leave you comments on your GAs that made you feel appreciated ;)

I never blacklist for ratio... I mean, if they weren't winning, we'd be winning more... and then who'd have the "bad" ratio?
I almost never giveaway to level 0 though, because I believe personally that everyone can give back to the site. There is no excuse...

People will say, "Oh, I don't have money..."
Fine, you win games from others, get the cards, sell the cards, buy one of the games EVERY week that goes on a major discount to like $.13 and give it away.... If you did that more often instead of just taking all the time, you'd have less animosity toward you.

But hey, that's just my two cents ;)
