Which is a better game Terraria or Starbound? What if I have a mac? Has anyone been able to play terraria well with ok frame rates on mac using WINE? Do any of you know the Terraria 2 approximate release date? Are Terria or Starbound even good games?

I reckon starbound has the potential to be better, definitely needs to work out some issues though. The devs are super responsive and are are already dropping patches.

I was actually expecting graphically something better. And terraria is better in my opinion, they didn't even bother to blend pixels on starbound. Also game looks complicated and from what i saw in trailer, motions of characters aren't smooth. Though it's in beta atm, but these are my opinions. And i followed a bit progress of the game from their website, i thought they would improve pixels but nope they didn't. Shapes of items are better than terraria but blending is better in Terraria.

Animations sure don't seem like the type of feature they will address in the future. It might get some general graphical tweaks, but earlier projects hardly ever change much from this point in development regarding that.

Really depends on what you like i think...Haven't played starbound yet but from what i've seen starbound is a little more complex and it has more exploration

Terraria packs a huge punch for such a tiny price. It will indubitably be discounted in the upcoming Winter Sale. Starbound has a lot of potential, and probably more replayability than Terraria, but it's hard to say since the beta only just launched. Terraria 2 is in a very early stage and I wouldn't expect anything from that any time soon.

They are pretty much same thing. Terraria is not exactly a demanding game, just about anything should run it, even through emulation. Terraria 2 is just being worked on, no details. And they are good games in what they do, some sandbox adventuring. There's over a hundred hours of content even before the latest update, just depends on how much you want to get out of it.

Now people, please stop making the same thread

I have sunk a massive amount of tine into Terraria on multiple steam accounts. It is easily one of the best purchases I have ever made on steam. THAT SAID, and I don't say this lightly, but as far as actual gameplay goes (art style opinions aside, although even then I prefer Starbound) Starbound does everything Terraria does, but better. The depth of Starbound is staggering. Once this game hits full release, frankly, in my opinion, Terraria is obsolete.

Terraria was a fantastic game, and Starbound could not exist without it, but Terraria was just a stepping stone to reach a game like Starbound. I sincerely hope that Terraria 2 attempts to tackle even a portion of what Starbound has to offer.

I agree fully. It's not a perfect game by any means, but it truly is the next evolution of Terraria.

I haven't gotten very far in Starbound, but I'm not sure how much of an "evolution" it is. The current gear upgrade path is as linear as you can possibly get. It appears to be impossible to skip tiers.

There also seems to be tool durability, but I haven't played around with that enough to comment on it. I'll just say that if it is durability, that's going to suck for high level pickaxes. Break a diamond pickaxe? You need everything starting from stone.

Anyway, as for my thoughts on the games, Terraria will probably be on sale for $2.50-$5 during the Christmas sale, there's not much reason to not get it. I'd say to hold off on Starbound for the time being as during what they're considering phase one of the beta, there's still a chance for character wipes.

Tools can be repaired using the ore used to craft them. You don't have to rebuild them through each tier all over again. I have a gold pickaxe that I have maintained just fine by occasionally repairing it with a single Gold Ore. That said, I do hope that once you have crafted an item once, you will get a shortcut schematic that doesn't involve previous tiers. I know there has been some pretty heavy discussion about making that change already.

My "evolution" comment is in regards to things like planet exploring, instead of just spawning a new world with cramped nonsensical biomes, over...and over...and over. I had a legendary axe made of bones drop, that had modifiers to release a shockwave that then morphs into a hail of bones, yet it was level appropriate and not some overpowered beast that would carry me through the game. Quests for each sector, NPC villages, better and more diverse dungeon generation, a truckload of more variation in building materials/decorations, each race being able to craft their own versions of gear/weapons, planets having something other than the same zombies over and over, 3D printing items on your ship, being able to get Tech items like hoverbikes and Mechs.

How is that NOT an evolution of the Terraria formula? Again, Terraria was fantastic, I loved it, but give Starbound some more time before you dismiss it.

"are they even good games?" is the question you should concern yourself with. Personally, I'm not a fan. I really thought I would be, I wanted to be. But I hated the controls and am not a fan of crafting or open ended sandbox games that give you no direction and you need a wiki to learn. That's just me though.

I agree that Terrarias controls and weird learning-curve was indeed a struggle.
Starbound, however, doesn't have those problems at all.

I agree with you on the whole about Starbound being a better game, but control wise, it is almost identical to Terraria. If someone isn't a fan of the control-scheme/playstyle of Terraria, Starbound is probably not for them either.

Well I have a list of games that I'd like to buy, and a list that I'd like to win. And Terraria was on the latter ;) It takes a lot of patience, but if you finally win it's an amazing feeling :)

Imagine my expression when I won Terraria on SteamGifts and Don't Starve on GameMiner in the same evening! Both from my wish-to-win list :D I was little drunk at the moment and therefore I performed a little dance of victory :p

Terraria is finished and quite good, I haven't played Starbound but it seems like it would overwhelm someone not used to that kind of game. Terraria is something you can set your own project for and put down at any time since the only real goal it has is "build a cool stronghold and fight bosses". I'd say if you already own it, play it while waiting for Starbound to get the kinks ironed out so you can get the best of of worlds.

As far as I have seen Starbound (which IS probably the Terraria 2, not sure here, mentlgen) has the potential to become a really good game. You can go to space in it too and discover new planets, sounds fun right? Not everyone is a fan of such a genre with this kind of atmosphere though...
Now... Terraria must be pretty amazing, wish there were more giveaways with this game in private groups and such.

I also have the same questions with you all, so I googled a bit and found out things that is pretty definitive. I shortened all the stuffs up. it's pretty much this :

  1. Terraria was lead developed by Andrew Spinks, his id "redigit" Wiki
  2. Finn Brice, or his id "Tiy" was a sprite artist on Terraria. Wiki
  3. at one point, redigit stopped developing Terraria to be with his family more (before update 1.2). Tiy left Re-logic (terraria dev) and act as the lead developer on Starbound through Chucklefish. (hence some similarities between the games)
  4. redigit got back into developing updates for terraria for 7 months (the 1.2 update) and also said there's still more to come (1.2.1 and so on). He also said that he wants to develop Terraria 2 because of the limitations of Terraria 1.
  5. more games, more fun !

I played Terraria for a bit and just shook my head. I guess the game's not for me. Not to mention the clumsy coop function - major drawback for me.

Both are great, but currently terraria is better since Starbound has little quest and lots of bugs (but that will chance over time, Starbound has enormous potential and a good dev team)

I don't get why one has to be better and i also don't get the butthurt i'm seeing from some of the terraria fanbase all over the internet. Honestly it's as pathetic as the minecraft fanboy butthurt back when terraria came out. I've played terraria a lot, 269h on my steam account and probably another 300 or more back when it was in beta, i have done, insane building projects aside since i'v never been into that kind of stuff, everything there is to do in the game both alone and with a friend. From everything i'v seen about starbound it looks like it's taken the terraria formula and vastly improved it so i don't see anything not to like. Moving on to Starbound from Terraria just seems like a natural transition to me. Work has not even started on Terraria 2 so there's not even an estimate on when it might be out, RED's not even done with the patching for Terraria yet.

If you're interested in this type of game get Terraria, it will probably be like 2$ on the winter sale, and play it until Starbound reaches the second stage of beta, that's when i plan on buying it aswell, by then it should be stable enough to have a very enjoyable experience and you should be done with most of the stuff you can do in Terraria. Not that you can't enjoy it now mind you, i'v seen nothing but praise from all the youtubers who're playing it now, but there will be some inevitable character wipes in this stage of beta and i'd rather wait.

THIS. POST. RIGHT. HERE.

People need to understand, that those who are supporting Starbound, and singing it's praises, aren't slinging mud at Terraria. Terraria is obviously the foundation that lead to Starbound. People who are fans of Terraria, should be overjoyed that the formula is receiving it's next iteration, and even more so, that the devs behind it know what they are doing. This isn't just some Terraria clone with a new coat of paint (there are definitely a few out there). This is the next evolution of the genre.

Terraria is still some of the best money I have EVER spent on Steam. I have zero regrets about the purchase, or the time spent, and I would still heartily recommend it to anyone who enjoys the genre. That said, if you want everything Terraria has to offer, and MORE, Starbound will be the way to go, once the beta is past "character wipe" phase.
