I've been meaning to pickup a F2P MMORPG that I could play with others with. I started with LOTR online, but having content behind a paywall (there's a lvl 25 or 35 town that i don't remember) turned me off. Also, lag issues and lack of region players made it hard to find others to play with (I live in SEA)

2 games that I'm currently considering:

Tera (Fate of Arun) - Combat mechanics seems pretty fleshed out, but i heard that it gets boring quickly
Wildstar - Recently converted to F2P, other than that I've heard nothing else.

So barring the classic "Runescape" reply, what would you recommend?

No more shooting RPGs, only the classic "Warrior - Mage - Rouge" style please

Tera - I'm inclined to it cos it seems even the Priest class can kick ass still
Wildstar - Supposedly becoming F2P
AION - contender for medieval MMORPG style
Neverwinter - It's reputation precedes it

Ooo, Wildstar's F2P now? I may have to get back into the game.

I played it for a couple months when it first released, and it was a fairly decent MMO. It had its flaws but I greatly enjoyed it. It also has the best Player Housing I've ever seen in an MMO.

Very interesting, I very well may have to dust my account off. Heck, maybe go ahead and throw a month of subscription on there to get some of those little bonus things during the transition.

From what I played of it, it was a very enjoyable game, it's just, after so many years of WoW and Runescape, I have a hard time paying month fees for games outside of those two.

It's going F2P in the fall and a lot of folks are reactivating their subscriptions right now. The latest patch was quite expansive and fixed a ton of problems.

Honestly, I really enjoyed the game, my biggest issue is I had noone to play with so I just stopped playing. Even my favorite MMOs I get bored of when I don't have peeps to at least chat with in game.

I'll definitely have to give it another go.

I wanted to see something awesome like a 10-man co-op boss run, so I've been looking for one. I did dislike them due to subscriptions and content behind paywalls (which is justified i know), but I'm just probing around for something i guess.

The wall that I hit in TERA was the CPU wall, the 40-60 fps I got on high details of normal play turned into MAXIMUM 5 fps in dungeons on lowest possible potato details, but that is THE ONLY reason I am not playing TERA right now. It's my favorite MMORPG, along with AION (in which I hit the paywall on EU and ping-wall on NA). I never really played any other MMORPG since those 3 walls...

How bad's the paywall? (Considering there's some1 else recommending AION as well below). I'm playing on a Notebook lol

The paywall on NA is not bad (compared to EU, it's nonexistent, but some may have a problem with it)
On EU, however, the restrictions on the gold pack means almost NO social features (you're on your own) unless you buy the gold pack. The last time I played, it was about 20kk kinah (which is easy to make with access to the AH, but there is no access to the action house without it)
The first time I played, the gold pack was about 4mil kinah, and I made that money at level 28, but I was stupid, I bought some nice looking wings, threw myself over a fence, alt+f4, rage uninstalled. Now it's at least 5 times that price...

Long story short, if you live in Europe, you either live with NA's ping (it was about 160-400 in Romania, problem is that is was inconsistent) or deal with the fact that you are solo until pretty late game unless you have some friend (or pay 5€, I think, it's really not that much)

PS: On NA, I had about 12mil kinah at level 30, the AH left me with ZERO money problems, but the ping, man, the ping...

I generally feel the same way, but the Star Wars universe is basically as close to High Fantasy as Steampunk is to Cyberpunk. You can see the differences, sure (I mean, fuggin' spaceships, obviously) but you've just as clearly got swords, magic, assassin classes and ranged classes. You're not throwing knives... exactly... but do you need to be?

I'm not entirely sure about the climate right now with it. I installed it on steam and checked it out the other day, but I was leveling a new character. The pvp was never very good but the pve dungeons and raids were really popular. There is also player created content which is kind of unique. You can create story content or just dungeons for people to complete. There is a whole development kit built into the game and I've never seen that before in a 3d mmo. I'm a bit of a lone wolf in mmos because my few friends tend to abandon ship and move onto the next big thing. There was plenty of solo content for me in neverwinter too. That said I really enjoy my pay to play games without subscriptions. ESO is just a box price right now and Secret World is a guilty pleasure of mine that I revisit occasionally.

I don't mind solo content considering it takes time to find people, but I'm hoping for 1 which supports more co-op than solo.

There is a lot of group content and a "group finder." It's free so you can always try it out on a rainy day if you want.

Permalink

It's personal preference, I played it when it was released at first, but my perception is a little different. As a character you pretty much end up just using the same seven or so skills constantly, sure, you can swap, but people tend to find what they're comfortable with and just use those all the time, which ends up with just "waiting out the cooldowns" for combat. You can actually dodge in real time, which is nice enough, but on the other hand it's also sorta required in the dungeons since otherwise you implode pretty quick.

Crafting is slanted to the cashers, as the tools you "need" to make the better stuff was from cash boxes only, sure you can, if you spend enough time, get it all for free by collecting hundreds of thousands of astrals diamonds (which as a free player, the quests limit you to getting a certain amount, thought it was like... 20k per day) and buying the tools that way. The hirelings (at least back when I played) where also locked down to white for free to play, but I think they actually made it possible to get a bit better ones ingame, but cash was again the very easy shortcut to it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree with your assessment, especially with the cash advantage. Cash was always a shortcut, even when gearing at max level. Things like bags were artificially rare to push people to buy them with real money and astral diamonds were slow to gain. That said, it was possible to play for free but the advantage is certainly there to pay. This is probably why I enjoy the pay to play games more like Guild Wars 2, ESO, etc. They tend to have less advantages and more "cosmetic". At least nothing that translates to unfair power.

You're right though, it's worth a look at, and even if you're free to play, you can burn a pretty amount of hours on it, but don't expect to be geared up at all, or competitive in the PVP pits. Reaching level 60 (which was the level cap when I played) was fairly simple, but there's a lot of quests that pretty much end up "run there, kill x of those creatures, then return here for your reward" or "go there, collect x of those items, then return here for your reward", but many MMO's suffer from that, but you do have to be able to look past that.

The crafting thing especially sorta annoyed me, as to get one of the slots for crafting, you needed to produce a "tier 3 result", which, you guessed it, needs the tools to be able to manage it (so you either need to borrow tools from friends, or buy them over time to get that slot). There's good things though, if you have access to a browser, you are able to "craft" without having the game installed by logging in through the portal and doing your assignments from there. (of course, certain things need prereqs 'resources' that you do need to buy in game, so you're need to be prepared for that).

The other good thing, as you already mentioned, is the "player created dungeon" feature, allowing players to creature dungeons (with the mobs leveled to the player that is running it) was nice, and kept the game fairly fresh, as there were always new dungeons to run, and some of the stories were actually fairly nice, however, the reward vs. time spend issue was there always, the player made dungeons give mostly token xp and only the "loot" that drops from the random mobs, no chance at all on rare items made them just a token run, either because you enjoyed them, or because you needed to run them for the daily associated with the player made dungeons. (understandable of course from a dev's point of view, as otherwise people would make super short dungeons to get quick chances at rare loot)

Well, I'm currently "addicted to Firefall.(until a point I get all my frames to lvl40) .

Game got servers in US and EU so you might have lag in SEA . Also syncing with their servers can be an annoying thing at times since its required for when you are doing quests(or jobs in-game) . You will have them stuck in loading for like 10-15minutes and maybe more. And the game isn't that well optimized at times.

The game is F2P but its hardly to say that its P2W since at the moment Red5(the devs) aren't bothering with the PvP map because of hackers in there. And because of that, the competetive players are in low numbers but you can still see them dueling on some maps.

To get the best gear you either craft it ... or buy it from someone who crafted it and to get best upgrades for your gear you either craft them, buy them or loot them from raids.

End game content isn't big. You have 7 dungeons and 3 raids(one of the raids got hard mode) . Dungeons are for 5ppl though most of them can be complete and with not a full party and raids are for 10-20man . 2 raids are boss only : you enter the raid, kill the boss, get the loot and get out and the 3rd raid is Michael Bay's porn material .

The community is focused on co-op experience, at least the new players since veterans are either just chilling in game or fooling around.

Anyway, since you dont see the point of futuristic MMOs then Firefall might not be your cup of tea.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

how accurate is the Steam reviews for Firefall? Cos from what i'm seeing it's going downhill

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Part of negative reviews came from the transition from beta to release . During the betas game offered more freedom in terms of exploring but also was confusing and complicated when comes to crafting . After release the game took the more casual and noob-friendly approach. Was it bad or good change depends on the way you think.

Now the community got problem with devs in terms of core mechanics. Red5 just loves to overhaul systems left and right which leaves not much developing on new content(latest addition to the game was the map Amazon that offered constant fights with the Chosen(one of your main enemies)) which was added 4 months ago.

But the main reason for negative votes is that the niche elements of the game are no more. Now you dont need to spend an hour calculating the best materials you could use to make it fit in your battleframe .

Extremely awsome, the combat especially (boss nest / raid) have unique mechanism that have to do beat them the example :

Desert Dragon Nest : the dungeon have 5 stage / mini boss to kill in order to get inside the Desert Dragon Room / final boss .

video example for my favorite class : Gladiator

long video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyW89TI3Xkc (this is 60 level cap nest )

if you want just to view their combat in short time :

and thats just for 1 job, there still a alot of class that have unique skill

It is different and people playing the first game are kinda stuck to that. But that happens with everything. 2 is better in many ways than the first. The first does have a few elements that people who played both are right when they say it was better but nothing that important. GW2 is one of the best mmorpg's out now but if you say you are into the "Warrior - Mage - Rouge" style and into gameplay in the likes of wow/aion/tera and the such you might feel a bit alienated by GW2.

Well if anyone cares, i'd just played a couple hours of Defiance. It's a gritty looking game with some nice elements of PVE, but honestly i wouldn't call it Co-op since most of the time it's more of a 'our interest are temporarily similar" rather than a "help each other out" kind of Co-op. Yes I'm one of those people who likes team synergy games.

At any rate, i'm just going to restrict to Fantasy-style MMORPGs

Hm. (Free?) Fantasy MMO, must be 3D, must be heavily party-focused. Well, I'm out, and I used to install 6 MMOs blindly and give 'em all a try just to see what they're like. Then again, I also heavily prefer solo play.
One thing though. If you ever get the opportunity to try Deicide, if that game even still exists... run. Last I knew there was a virus in like the second-to-last patch. Took me three days to get it running only to find out the game was basically junk.
And if you want something both good and free, stay away from Cryptic Studios--both as a developer and just as a property-holder. Their pay barriers are always cruel.

As someone who has played TERA for quite some time, I can totally recommend it. The leveling system is nice, I Iike the dungeon part especially. Since I mostly played close combat classes (tank/beserker), leveling on your own is manageable. For the dungeon part, if you cannot find a friend to help you in one of those, there's even an option to search for players on other servers which is pretty nifty. The PvP part is also pretty nice, the one I mostly did was kinda 'capture the flag' with 19 other people against 20. Also I had no problems with fps drops in dungeons, exept there's one event in higher levels (nexus event) where I constantly had 5 fps because of all the players participating.

As for Guild Wars 2, cannot recommend that one. The combat gets kinda repetitive, though this game has some nice events. Still, once you're max level, there's really nothing much to do. Maybe I just dislike the whole 'everyone has the same equipment' idea behind Guild Wars in general, but I didn't feel a challenge in high levels anymore.

At the start there's a drop down menu, which asks you which server you're going to join. There are PvE and PvP servers and you can chose either of 'em. Sadly you cannot reverse your choice (or you have to pay a sh*tload of money to change servers). So hoping you've only just begun playing, I'd suggest you join a PvE server and start anew.

I think my recommendation would have to go to RIFT.

This game is a WoW-clone in the truest sense of the word: A Hotkey-based Fantasy RPG, but it offers a wide variety of Co-op options. It's possible to level up entirely in a group (once you reach level 10) and every class has specs for both healing and group buffing; but is flexible enough to allow you to include damaging options without being pigeonholed into a single role.

Now the downside: Once you reach max level, it is extremely P2W. As in, if you don't pay real money, it would take you literally months of grinding to earn equivalent gear through the in-game currencies. Technically, you can earn anything a payer can get, but they release new content at a rate that it's almost impossible to catch up. For the leveling content, though, it's a pretty good game. I can't necessarily speak for what the population is like right now, or in your timezone, so good luck there.
