Your initial thoughts may have been poor if you chose to watch a series that wasn't particularly good. Would you judge TV shows as a whole based on Bold and the Beautiful or Breaking Bad? There will always be anything between horrible and great ones.
From the top of my head the great ones are Black Lagoon, Monster, Clannad (CHOO CHOO, ALL ABOARD THE FEEL TRAIN), Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (the other series is alright, but FMA:B is better), Spice and Wolf, Ghost in the Shell. There are many others but I won't throw much at you once.

As a fan of the manga - I remember really looking forward to FMA:B but I ended up enjoying the first anime adaptation more. It nailed the characters and the humour - whilst FMA:B followed the original plot more closely but sort of fell flat, in my opinion. :/ Such a pity.

No, they do have an OVA and a live action film. That's about all you'll get.

Death Note is fantastic, Attack on Titan is great, and I quite enjoy this anime called Mushishi, completely different though, in fact none of the three I named are similar. So yeah, search them all up and see which one you like most.

(Here you can find pretty much all the info you need)[anidb.net] but there are plenty of good animes.
I have to say, i stopped watching anime for quite some years, and i have not watched many new ones, the old ones are still good.
Abenobashi, 3x3 shinobuden or sexy commando gaiden (although not many will get the humor of this one) for the laughs, death note, i liked speed grapher too, a lot, gotta love the intro at least lol.
Some good/decent animes to consider. Mai hime, Evangelion (a bit overrated, but still worth it), trigun, full metal panic, genshiken, code geass(seriously, watch this one), Ranma 1/2, like the best action/comedy ever. One outs (i know i already named 3 baseball animes, and im not even a fan) this one is great too, but its not the conventional baseball anime, you should find it right away.
Some animes about childs training to become the best at x thing are great. Hajime no ippo (not that child here though), hikaru no go, Major and ace of diamond (both baseball), naruto (removing the fillers)
Avoid tenjou tenge. It starts brilliant and it traps you in the first episode, real quick, then, it becomes like the best anime ever in the first 10-12 episodes, then, and i dont know how they could screw something that bad, it becomes the worst anime ever. so, yeah, dont watch that, its a huge upset.
Currently watching attack on titan (im in episode 15 or something like that). looking very good.

I recently watched it too. I think it's a masterpiece. Here is author's of Another twitter In one of the posts states: "By the end of the year I'm starting a new series. Temporary name - Another 2. Now there are two ideas. One - the story occurring in 2001, the second - in 2009. I can not decide which one to write first. Therefore I ask the readers: what would you like to read?"

There are many good ones, though like any show out there not everyone will like every anime.
Ones I have enjoyed.
Evangelion. Enjoyed right up to episode 24, disliked 25 and 26. Disliked Death and Rebirth, and but liked End of Evangelion. Been watching the new rebuild of Evangelion, 1.11, 2.22, 3.33 have all been released, 4.44 is on its way and should be the end of the series. They are movies and have actually been in theaters (Japan and US/Canada) They redid the animation, and even changed the story quite a bit, specially from 3.33 forward. I've enjoyed it quite a bit.
Fooly Cooly (FLCL) I've watched it subtitled, I've watched it Dubbed and I still have no idea what the hell was happening. lol
Noir. Great series about 2 female assassins.
Macross and most everything related, I think there are at least 7 to 10 series that have the name Macross in them. I really enjoyed Macross Plus. Great music and fight scenes.
Ghost in the Shell. Awesome movie and tv series.
Akira. Great movie to start off with, it was one of the first I started with that I actually knew it was anime (before that was Robotech which was based off Macross and 2 other unrelated animes)
Ranma 1/2. Really funny series and lots of OVAs of a boy who falls into a magical pond and turns into a girl when splashed with cold water, but turns back with hot water. His father fell into another pond that turns him into a panda and one of his rivals fell into a pond and now turns into a baby pig.
Samurai Pizza Cats. Another funny series about cats who are samurais, who deliver pizza.
Escaflowne. Another great movie, but the series is good too.
Gundam is off and on for me. I enjoyed Gundam Wing and a few other series of Gundamn, there is like 15 or 20 of them.
Patlabor, couple of good OVAs, there is a live action movie coming too.
Cowboy Bebop, heard it was good haven't gotten around to watching it yet.
Blue Gender, great series right up till the last episode if I remember right, then it just all fell apart.
X 1999. Been a while since I seen it, good movie. I hear the series was pretty good too.
Black Lagoon, friend of mine likes it a lot, have yet to get around to watching it.
Revolutionary Girl Utena, been a while since I seen it, I enjoyed it though.
Project A-Ko, pretty funny, need to watch it again been a while.
On Your Mark. Neat little music video anime, only 7 minutes long, it really should be a whole series. http://vimeo.com/48043470
Giant Robo
There are a bunch of others ones, but this is a good list of ones I personally like or are at least on my want to watch list.
Oh and while subbed is better to get a more accurate story, I prefer dubbed that way I don't have to miss anything going on by reading stuff or going back cause it was on the screen and then off before I could read it.

The constant rasengan spam is really odd, like he hasn't learned much in all that time.
Wouldn't you say the amount of fillers is excessive once you know how many there are? I believe this is the reason why people view the series being really shitty.

I actually watched the show weekly/daily I forgot when it was airing in Japan, it was pretty good up until the snake guy died, after that I lost interest.

The fillers really spoil all the fun, in Naruto (original) there weren't many filers, but in Shippuden its overflowing with fillers, just like one piece.
But those who read manga don't have to face this issue...

If I were to narrow my favorites down to 5 they would probably be something like this. Cowboy Bebop - Amazing animation and fight scenes, lots of great action, great music, and the characters are very likable, it's a classic. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - You know how sometimes Gundams go into "super mode"? Gurren lagann does this quickly and NEVER GOES OUT OF IT. This is an amazing over the top mecha show that caught me off guard. At first I watched it for the sheer GAR and badassery of it all, which continued throughout, but I even cared about the characters by the end (except Yoko in the beginning, but she got a little better). FLCL or Fooly Cooly - On top of being absolutely hilarious FLCL has some awesome action, very expressive animation, and in my opinion the best soundtrack in all anime. There is no real way to explain it clearly, but it's only 6 episodes and it's great. Darker Than Black - Another awesome action show, similar to cowboy bebop in some ways, but a lot... well, darker. This one has it all, great characters, great action, great music, second season isn't as good, but Darker Than Black Gaiden is incredible. Yin is best girl. Finally, Neon Genesis Evangelion is INCREDIBLE. It's not the easiest thing to watch as there is a lot of symbolism and not everything is expressly told to you. This show has some of the most human characters in all fiction, each has their flaws and problems, and each deal with it in a different way. On top of that it's a pretty epic mecha series, and End of Evangelion is my favorite movie of all time.

Let's see. If you're looking for good Japanese animation, you should take a look at Fate/Zero, Kara no Kyoukai: Garden of Sinners and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure if you're looking for great fantasy stuff. The Big O is a fun little giant robot show. Spice and Wolf is a great character driven series. Paranoia Agent is a pretty nice watch. And if you're into mindscrewy stuff, Serial Experiments Lain is certainly a shining example of that.
If you're a fan of slice of life, you should give Lucky Star a try. People like to trash the genre, but it's a fun show. Stay away from crap like Highschool of the Dead, for your own sake.

Try Shiki, Deadman Wonderland, Elfen Lied, and When they cry if you liked Another.

Hello,
So I recently started to watch anime. My first thoughts on them were quite poor. Then I started to watch "Another" and it was mind blowing. I finished watching it a few days back and till now I'm so sad that it already ended. The reason I'm writing this is to ask the people out here, is there going to be a season 2 of "Another"? Do you have any thoughts or maybe sources on that? I would appreciate all the feedback on this.
Arigato.
P.S I even learnt a bit of Japanese by watching some of the animes ;D
