Whenever HB made it possible to give to local charities I started giving every penny to the charity part. Before that I gave the majority to charity and HB. Discussing this with a friend, I decided to start a poll.I didn't think this needed to be said but please only answer if you actually buy the Humble Bundles.

Since it is part of HB's mission statement to support charitities, here's a good resource for knowing where your money is going when you donate.

Ah, well I just edited the post so that hopefully only people who actually buy bundles will reply to the poll ;).

I have cranked it up to 100% a few times, but I tend to forget to touch those sliders when buying bundles since I don't buy them that often.

I'll make an honest answer here. What I said is true. My steam assets are a lot better than my real life's assets. And although I have some money on steam, I don't have any paypal money. :P

Fair enough, bad assumption on my part. I don't think it'd be impossible to find $1 from time to time but I do get that things like food/shelter/etc are more important :)

Sorry for not making it clearer. From the current pool, there are only a handful that I recognize and none of them are the ones that I would like to give to on a regular basis.

Why did I think you were in SA? Anyway, I see.

Although the Staff Pick for instance this time has Oxfam and Action Against Hunger. OXFAM actually lets you see where each $1 goes and they've been vetted.I know that some people see charity as throwing good money after bad and although I don't understand that worldview sometimes otherwise decent people need to have proof before them.

sometimes otherwise decent people need to have proof before them.

This bring to mind the proverb "Trust but verify". While most charities act with the best of intentions, there are some that have either mismanaged their funds or have been outright scams in the past. By disclosing their financials to the public, they are keeping themselves accountable and showing the world that they know what they are doing and are serious about their mission.

I'm not against giving to charities and I commend Humble for making it a core feature of their site. It is just difficult to care about the amount when you do not hold a vested interest for any of the charities.

Actually something to do with a comment about giveaway regions, I think:)

There aren't any local charities for your area? I guess they have to partner with HB in the first place.

well, over here, it's unfortunately not unheard of for a charity to spend 60% on marketing and 40% on overhead.

People say things like that a lot, and other than some chapters of The Red Cross mismanaging funds, I don't know of very many actual examples of this happening. It's true that some charities spend as much on overhead as they do on donations, but they tend to be the big ones like RC, Kidney Foundation, Lung Cancer, etc.

none of the major charities do this. But there are some scam charities that do. Here are some examples where fundraising comprises over 80% of the budget:

I just leave it by default, if HB thinks it's a fair deal I'm fine with that. I don't see any reason to give less to the developpers, they deserve their money, maybe I could give a little less to HB but they also deserve to be paid.

A lot of times I am surprised when I see the average breakdown; the devs typically get the lion's share of the money. If it's a big company like Deep Silver or Disney (Lucasarts owner) I wryly set the tab to 0. IMO a charity needs it a lot more than a multimillion/billion dollar company but to each their own:)

THQ was featured in HiB because they were going bankrupt. And the CEO bought a bundle from his own pocket paying quite a lot of money.

I'm pretty sure Origin has defaulted their bundles so that they get 0$ and the entire proceeds made goes to charity or Humble. While it is true that one is never too large to fail, I highly doubt that the 1-2$ M in sales will impact such large companies in any serious degree :P.

Whoa! Those are some cute pups.
Sadly, until I move out of my townhouse and into a proper house, I can only have one dog, otherwise I'd have several already. Most people go to the mall to shop -- I go sometimes to visit the pups and kittens at the shelter there LOL.

The 8th one was in the tub; that was the best picture we managed to snag.
Those dogs are all fairly big now (we kept in touch with the adopters for about a year after)

I've got two huskies, and that makes me happy. Keep visiting at the shelter. Offer to take them for a walk once in a while. If they get to know you, maybe they'll let you take a loaner to the beach or camping or something

My college roommate had a Husky - beautiful dogs, fiercely loyal and extremely friendly. I adopted a malamute years back, but when he was 1 1/2 years old, someone stole him out of the yard (imagine that - a 90 pound dog, stolen), then a few years later I picked up a Yorkshire Terrier, which is perfect for where I live. I'm planning on moving into a new house soon, so I'm always looking for new housemates of the 4 legged variety lol. My mom and stepfather were both dog trainers (part-time, anyway), so I grew up around all kinds of dogs over the years. My next dog will definitely be a rescue, though.

When I was young, our dog got dognapped. More accurately, he used to run away a lot. He probably would come back on his own accord, but we lived in a big city so that never happened.

Once he was gone for 3 days, before we get a call. He was in the worst part of town, and when my mom went to pick him up, they had bought new leash, collar, dog bowl, dog food, etc. Guess he was such a pain in the ass they didn't want him any more. But they still wanted to get paid for all the crap they bought - at vastly inflated rates.

Here's more pictures of those puppies:

Usually leaving it as is... By the current ratio, as I see, it's like 15% to charity

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I used to manipulate the three % in the beginning, mostly depending on the developer (the bigger the dev, the less of a %) and try to slide the charity higher. That was until I realized that if I had to pay 75cents for the games and 25cents would be a voluntary bonus to charity, I wouldn't actually pay it. Now I just don't give the biggest % to charity. I don't touch the slides at all, 'cause I'm not going to act like I care enough about the charity. If I didn't have to I wouldn't pay the charity, But I Have To pay a certain amount in order to get the product. Let HB decide what they do with the money.
