What is a hotbar?

Edit: Seeing as I don't know what one is, I'll just throw out my favorite MMO. Phantasy Star Online 2.

the hotbar is the set of squares on the bottom of the screen (generally) that has numbers assigned to them, so when you press the number, you use a skill or ability.

hotbars in mmos are basically the focus of all gameplay so you watch them as the skills cooldown to immediately use your other ability.

Ah, I see. PSO2 has a hotbar then, but it's not completely focused on it. You're mainly going to be using left click for normal attacks, right click for special attacks (of course, there's controller compatibility, and it's highly recommended if you play a melee class), and really the only thing you use the hotbar for is for your healing items and activating passive skills like stances. Pretty much all the combat is done with direct control.

It IS possible to map spells to the hotbar for easy access, but you don't have to do that, and it doesn't work for Photon Arts (striking or ranged skills), only Techs (magic).

Yeah, the hotbar in PSO2 is basically just quick access to potions; most of the time you'll never touch it.

well ah I THINK Defiance doesn't use a hotbar... don't quote me on that though.

also if I remember correctly ESO (elder scrolls online) didn't use a hotbar... I think...

Mabinogi. It has a hotbar, but just because you can use a skill doesn't mean it won't get you killed. You need to time your actions and choose the right one for the situation, because if you fuck up even once you're risking death.

Mabinogi has it's own issues though. Like Nexon.

That used to be the case (though Nexon Europe were always pretty good). But since I moved to the NA servers, I've been very impressed with Nexon. Yeah, there's issues, but it's like an entirely different company. Unless they've changed back into monsters since I stopped playing, don't let Nexon stop you playing Mabi.

Really? It seems like everything cool is behind a paygate. Yeah, you can get the core content without paying, but then someone shows up on their $30 thunder dragon and decimates all of the mobs, despite having obviously only played a few hours.

I tried getting back into it, but I disliked the addition of classes. I also heard that the high level PVP was really unbalanced.

The classes don't really do anything but give a helpful bonus to certain things. It's just a more in-depth version of Destiny and that was around for ages. You can change your class whenever you like during a rebirth, so you're not locked into it, it makes it just as open as it always was but you can speed up the grind.

Fusion Bolt. Free and cool. That's all I need to say about that.

On the other hand, Fusion Bolt backed up by a trio of dragons, now that's awesome.

Talisman Online only has 3 10-slot hotbars you can alternate through, as well as like 60~ slots for random items and other skills if you wish to use them. Oh wait, you said one without a hotbar... I think the definition of a game is that you interact with it, but since you're not interacting with it, you may as well just be watching a movie. XD

Spiral Knights technically has a hotbar but the only stuff you ever use from it is healing a rez. The game can be configured for a controller and all of your attacks are controlled with just one button and you have multiple weapon slots that you go back and forth through with buttons. You can set up hotbar buttons for weapon slots but not sure why you would bother.

Essentially if you have a controller hooked up you don't have to use the keyboard and mouse except for stuff like chat or moving through menus quickly.
