I just got a new laptop, the hardware is decent enough for most games (i5, 4GB RAM, Intel HD gfx) but I want some games I can play for when I don't have a controller or mouse. I'm thinking strategy and sim games, the kind of games where I don't need fast reactions, but really anything that would work well I'm open to.

I have a mouse but I don't always want to sit at my desk, I want to have things I can play on the train or when I'm lying back in bed.

assuming you have a touchpad that still counts as no mouse, i've found games like gnomoria and prison architect to work well with my laptop on my lap. also point-and-click adventure games like the blackwell series. i've also enjoyed card-based games like hearthstone and faerie solitaire. civ v does pretty well too, though not on the highest graphics settings.

Dragon Age Origins. Epic RPG! There is an active pause so u can stop your game at any time and plan next moves easily even using touchpad on laptop. I highly recommend this game to anyone. It's the game that made me love RPG's and I still just can't... just can't find a better one even though I played so many since then (Baldur's, NWN2, Mass Effect, TES M,O,S etc.)
P.S. Well, Witcher got close and it can also be played decently on touchpad.

I bought a laptop recently I and really got into Hearthstone on it. It can be played fluently with only the trackpad, since there's no need for much control. I suggest trying it out even if you're not into card games. It's very fun and addicting.

Well I've played 1000+ hours of skyrim on a laptop with touchpad and had no problems whatsoever. You can easily get used to playing any game really, the only exceptions are the really fast paced shooters, multiplayer games. I recommend the Total War games (anything below Empire Total War) also the Civilization games.

also an usb mouse is literally the cheapest hardware upgrade you can buy on the market :D

No, contrast to what you wrote here, MOST games can run on medium/high settings on his computer because MOST games are indie mini or medium games. I have Intel Series 4, and most of the games in my library run smoothly at high settings.

Any Civilization game, turn based RPGs, rogue like games, FTL etc. Divinity Original Sin (Early Access) just released a new beta version with a laptop specific interface.

Cave Story, the original free or Steam's + version, any is fine. (But I do recommend the + version.)
