There has been barely any light-hearted discussions here on SG lately, so I wanted to break the ice and talk about one of my favorite game genres, racing. I do all kinds of racing, sim racing, destruction derby racing, arcade racing and it is all good fun! This discussion was born when I saw a giveaway for Grid (2019) Ultimate Edition, which peaked my interest in the Grid franchise again, since I don't own any previous or current titles I have nothing to say about it so I did some digging. I have been interested in the Grid franchise before but not as deeply as currently. From the Grid games I was only interested in Grid (2008) and Grid (2019), the more recent titles look too realistic in my opinion to feel like an arcade racing game. Mainly why I prefer Grid (2008) over Grid (2019) is the damage model and physics, which from gameplay footage I enjoy a lot more, there is also some sort of different aspect to the game Grid (2019) didn't have but I guess that's cool. Too bad Grid (2008) is like 50€ on the gray market, unfortunate.

Enough about Grid, I enjoy other racing games too! I mostly like games with car explosions and crashes and it excites me a lot more to see professional craftsmanship destroyed for whatever reason, here are my top favorite picks for racing games!

  1. Assetto Corsa Competizone Has Wheel Support
I am not much of a sim racer in my opinion, I don't play all these Assetto Corsa's and iRacing's but this one was fun, I've sometimes just felt the need to drive a fast car. With Assetto Corsa Competizone I just take my racing wheel out and I pull out a random race track and I just cruise and drive around, hitting the gas as hard as I can while listening to Korn or something, pretty stress relieving! I am not sure about the technicalities or anything but for just a racing game on your own, it is very cool!

  2. BeamNG.drive Has Wheel Support
If this game, well not necessarily even a game, I would just call this a physics simulation software is familiar to you by name or by other means you know how cool this game is. The way the cars crash is incredible, I love everything about it. This is honestly an alternative for Assetto Corsa Competizone for me, because in this game I just like to drive around during sunset with my very average car, listen to some Rush and zone out, it's a very euphoric experience. This is a game where my computer actually struggles to run sometimes, although it is largely my fault because I have absolutely every setting in existence on the maximum. Probably my favorite part of the game is police chases, you can either chase an enemy or you can get chased by a police car and I find both very fun to do when I am bored. Although BeamNG.drive offers little content in terms of story and missions it is a lot more fun in sandbox.

  3. Burnout™ Paradise Remastered No Wheel Support
First off, this game might not work through Steam, since this game was published by Electronic Arts, you already know what to expect. From the first second you start the game (when it starts) you can hear the sweet sound of Paradise City by Guns N' Roses and the beautiful Paradise City title screen, which is the name of the city in the game, I could sit at the title screen for hours if I wanted to. The game has a great console release on the PlayStation 4 which I played the crap out of with a friend. This might be one of the most fun racing games ever since it's so arcade-y and fast paced. The main charm of the game is its open world aspect, every race has absolutely no correct path and you can choose whatever path to the destination you want, it is so cool to find shortcuts and do tricks and just piss off those nasty enemy CPU's. What I love even more about this game is the car selection, there is truly something for every taste. Personally I use the black Chevrolet Camaro, which has served me well as it is a high top speed oriented car. My favorite part has to be how you unlock cars, to be able to unlock the car that you have available to you through licenses and races have to be taken down by crashing them, they will randomly appear on the road and you must catch up and destroy them, I love this part of the game and it is done really well. The most fun type of race in my opinion is the takedown race where you have to destroy X amount of cars in a given amount of time, they get harder as you get higher level licenses but they always stay fresh. I recommend getting this on a sale for 4,99€ just in case the game doesn't work, there are guides how to get it running and I managed to get it running fine. Just be careful and be ready to refund it when needed.

  4. FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage Collector's Edition No Wheel Support
This game got the Colletor's Edition update about a month ago at the time of writing this, they completely removed Windows Live from the game which was a service that was shut down a long time ago and it was just an annoyance since it didn't actually do anything. They even added achievements and made it Steam Deck verified which is so freaking cool. Some might say FlatOut 2 was better than FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage and it is probably true, however for some reason I enjoyed this title more. This game is pretty old, but it has aged well and I still play it from time to time, very fun! I enjoy the different challenges and destruction derby missions and they are pretty difficult but I can always manage, there are like powerups and stuff and it is a blast. There is also some career mode I haven't gotten into yet but I've only heard good about it. I recommend getting this game, true cult classic.

  5. Wreckfest Has Wheel Support
Wreckfest is developed by the same people who made FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage and that's basically all you need to know, they did an amazing job. This game tries to imitate realistic damage physics as well as a sim racing aspect which it balances perfectly in my opinion. The cars have a ton of customization, maybe not as much as for example Need For Speed games but it is great, you can make you car look any way you want. This game has multiplayer and I enjoy just hopping into a random server with no rules and trying to survive the oncoming buses with giant rams in the front trying to wreck my ice cream truck. You heard me right, there is an ice cream truck in the game, however not everything is sunshine and rainbows, some cool cars are all locked behind DLC packs and it is unfortunate, but they don't give you an advantage since the cars only really matter by what's inside and you can get by with just base game cars, that's why I recommend waiting for a sale and getting the complete edition, I just can't live without the ice cream truck. There is something in the game called tournaments which are basically seasons of new cars you can unlock exclusively using the points you gather by doing daily, weekly and monthly challenges however DLC's unlock more races to do so it is pretty Pay 2 Win. You can get very cool cars from the tournaments and they do compensate not being able to drive all the DLC cars if you don't have them. I prefer this over FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage but that is my own honest opinion.

If you could share me and others some of your favorite racing games too I haven't listed above you are free to do so. Racing games are fun man, I love them so much, ever since I played all those free bootleg racing flash games it hasn't been the same. Week is almost over, enjoy your upcoming weekend guys!

Love racing games as well. Happy to see other enthusiasts here.
I myself am trying to get into Competizone as we have official competition in my country in which you can take part and winner is sent to world championship. I mean I most likely wouldn't come close, but wouldn't mind competing. But as for circuit racing, even less GT racing - I am bad at.

I personally am huge rally fan - so obviously that is Dirt 2.0 , first Dirt game.. Dirt 4 was more arcady but fine. WRC is not horrible - I love playing that on steamdeck. Have tried it with wheel, but overall I go back to Dirt 2.0

From circuit racing - Project Cars is good as well. I mean there are many many more which I could talk about, but I would say these are the most prominent.

I have never tried a rally game before, none have really peaked my interest. I heard rally games are pretty hard so I've tried to keep distance with them, although I do enjoy driving a car in the jungle map in BeamNG.drive which is pretty fun. I definitely want to try a rally game sometime but that's when I feel like I wouldn't do crap at it, after all what's the point of playing when you can't even feel remotely good at the game.

I am definitely a fan of racing games but to a very casual level, I don't ever try too hard to be good. Competitiveness isn't really my thing but I enjoy racing because I just love the touch of a racing wheel and being behind a car, it is amazing!!!

Well.. regarding difficulty - I would say to each their own.

Rally is pretty much opposite of what you would expect from grip racing (assetto, project cars). In those games it is on precision, traction, speed control. While in rally you definitely have all these three components vital to winning, they behave in absolutely different manner.

So for me for instance circuit tarmac racing is the one which is difficult (I for example struggle with tarmac rallies in Dirt 2.0) but find the chaotic nature of gravel racing way more easier. So I wouldn't call either particularly difficult on their own, but more to do with yourself. Objectively I would call both GT racing and rally as similarly difficult for someone with no preference or background in those.

As for competitiveness - I once took part in qualification in rally (e-sport rally on simulator) and got a taste for it :D

By DiRT Rally you mean the first DiRT Rally game right? The 2015 release. I watched a comparison video of DiRT Rally and DiRT Rally 2.0 and I am not really sure what to think of a Rally game like that. If it isn't a bother and you want to see if the key works I'd be more than happy to accept the proposal. I suppose this can motivate me to set up my racing wheel again after a few months. DiRT Rally also supports racing wheels but I didn't find a list where my wheel was included since mine is newer but I am sure it will work.

I remember playing a few racing games in the past, like some of the early NFS (Porsche Unleashed for the PSX was my favorite), or in more recent years Burnout Paradise (heck, the whole Burnout saga is excellent), but I have a soft spot for a lil' game called Blur that got delisted from almost everywhere. Anyone else played it?

I remember NFS Porsche, though I was struggling with the later years in the game and never completed it. But it had a lot of cool mechanics we don't see in NFS games anymore. I even remember buying broken down cars, fixing them, and selling for a small profit.

Burnout Paradise was amazing, as well. That really was the last generation from which I enjoyed the racing games.

You should try Gran Turismo 2 Simulation Disk (Disc 2). It has career mode and the part I love from this one is the "used car" sales from each manufacturer. It has tons of old school cars and they put a lot of effort with the technical explanation and history of each car. It's some sort of car enciclopedia. Hard to get on the original PSX but there's emulation.

Its crazy that there's no real competitor to gran turismo on PC. All these forza games throw cars at you etc... That in itself is not a bad thing, but I'd like a game where you start with a real piece of crap (ford pinto, fiat punto etc) and turn them into a 500hp monster.

I've heard only great things about Gran Turismo, I will try it someday. I just wish there was a game where you started with a COMPLETE piece of trash like something that's rusting since the '70s and you take it to street races and then actual circuit races. That would be pretty cool if done right I think.

Best one by far is GT4, especially with the randomizer mod. The most "friendly" in the series is GT6, easy licenses, better b-spec.

Sadly the only thing that comes close to that are the forza games. I was so stoked to try FH5 but lo and behold, here's a freaking McLaren Senna as your starter car because you played FH4! Oh and also, happy current event here's a Chiron. Like gee, next time just tell me "Congratz you completed the game" as soon as I start it. I guess little kids love stuff like this so thats why everyone does it now.

Do you recommend either Forza Horizon game? They both seem really cool in terms of graphics, cars and environment but I just feel like the price tag is just crazy high. I will try to play both games at some point since they seem pretty fun with a racing wheel, but I haven't decided yet if I want to buy them or not.

I only played FH4 and FH5. Out of the two, I prefer 4's map because it has seasons so it's like 4 different maps that changes weekly and FH4 currently has more cars than FH5. Other than that, sadly, FH5 is a shameless "stand alone expansion" to FH4. I wouldn't even call it a reskin. It's literally just a new map to play on.

Forza games are expensive but FH4 may be discontinued soon like FH3, for which you cannot find a legitimate copy online for a reasonable price anymore... FH3 costs more than 100€ on various websites, and that's the standard version.

Comment has been collapsed.

This really gives me more insight on the games, I want to get only FH4 then. Thanks for the advice. I don't really like the FH5 map because it takes place in Mexico and looks too gray and depressing for a racing game map. Forza Horizon 4 is something I can get behind, the lush trees and whatnot.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree that the seasons had more impact and thus added more to the atmosphere in 4, but well, Mexico is subtropical, so the seasons there just don't differ that much. Now you can citicise the location design, but I'm happy about every game not taking place in the USA.
New location, new map, new tracks, new graphics technology, different add-ons, some new cars. The pretty similar map between Saint's Row 3 and 4 or Far Cry New Dawn are re-skins.
FH5 had fewer cars than 4 at release, but overtook it by now and is still growing.
4: 752

Nah the location is fine, but it's not big enough of a change to be able to claim that it's a new game with a straight face. TDU2 for example has two islands, out of which just one is as big as FH3, FH4 and FH5 combined. Size isn't everything of course, but for a car game, it's up there on the priority list.

Had to get used to the camera and controller, but by now it's working like a charm. With online services it would probably be easier to obtain cash and cars, but I'm getting there. Bugs me a bit that the merchant doesn't offer all cars, will have to check the used cars merchant very often I guess.
Licenses were fun, not sure If I try to get gold though. If enemy cars wouldn't be fixed, one could save more bucks for cars instead of tuning. And I'd love to have racing line just for breaking, not just off/on. I'll probably turn it off as soon as I know all tracks.

The one racing series I really got into in early 2000s was Need for Speed. I started with NFS2, and I played every release up to Carbon. My favorites were NFS2, Underground 2 and Most Wanted. Then Pro Street just didn't appeal to me, and I pretty much dropped the series. I played the Hot Pursuit remake, and while it was fun it just didn't have the same charm anymore, and so then I didn't even bother with the Most Wanted "remake". Outside of those, I recently got and played through NFS Heat, and it was alright, but it just doesn't have the same magic/charm/feel from those earlier games. Only one that I am still slightly curious about is the NFS from 2015. As I've heard it has that more classic Underground/Most Wanted feel to it, but it still had a very mixed reception, and I generally try to avoid any game that is always online.

I greatly enjoyed Burnout series as well, and Burnout Paradise was a real standout. The Midnight Club 3 was also amazing. Flatout 2 was silly fun, as well. I never bought GRID (2008), but I actually remember putting a lot of time into the demo of the game, as I really loved how cars felt and handled in it, but somehow I never got around to buying it. And once again it seems to have been "replaced" by an inferior "remake".

Anything past the PS3/360 era of racing games hasn't really appealed to me. I am not into pure simulation, and the arcade selection hasn't had anything that could even match Burnout Paradise. I feel there hasn't really been much progress in arcade racing games (and I'd say in most game genres, but I'll keep my pessimistic rants about the gaming industry out of here). It also seems the era of early Fast and Furious movies and car "modding" of early 2000s is gone, so we are not really getting games with the feel of Underground or Midnight Club anymore. There isn't exactly anything new to take its place either.

Edit: I did think of another game. It is not really a racing game per se, but you do control a car, it has that great arcade feel, and you could easily see it as something arising from one of Flatout's minigames just with much more precise car controls. It is Rocket League. Though it is primarily a competitive online game, with a very high skill ceiling, so it might be difficult to get into it now, when you see the top players who can do insane maneuvers with their cars, that seem would take years to learn.

I've tried NFS Hot Pursuit on the PS3 and NFS Heat on the PS4, I must say I enjoyed Hot Pursuit a lot more than I did NFS Heat, and I don't really know why. I haven't been a big fan of Need For Speed games, well I did enjoy Hot Pursuit a lot and I played the heck out of it, but NFS Heat didn't really sit with me.

I'd love to play Grid (2008) now and try it but it is just wayyy too hard to get your hands on nowadays, the newer games aren't any good either. I don't want Grid 2 either because it has no cockpit camera which sucks.

There is nothing I really liked more in the destruction racing genre than Burnout Paradise, it is absolutely perfect. The game was clearly made with heart and it has character, although I do play other racing games more often I can't get enough of Burnout.

I agree, Hot Pursuit (2010) is better than NFS Heat. It's arguably the best NFS game made after 2006. But it still didn't entice me enough to get back into playing NFS games. Might be not directly related to the Hot Pursuit remake, but I just remember not wanting to play the Most Wanted "remake" and to tarnish my memory of the 2005 game. And Heat, was just a game I decided to give a shot to try the "modern" NFS games, as it was on a huge sale a while back (96% discount), but it only reinforced my belief that the modern NFS games are not "it" anymore.

Burnout Paradise definitely was the peak of arcade racing games, for me. It's been only downhill from there.

As for Grid (2008), I was curious, and I just looked up second hand console versions. I don't know if you have an an Xbox 360, or an old PS3 around, but you can get quite cheap (under 10 bucks) second hand PS3 and 360 copies of the game.

I was wrong about the backwards compatibility (I now edited it out of my comment above). The original Race Driver: Grid is one of the few games that was never made backwards compatible. So you would need an Xbox 360 or a PS3.

But yes, depending on how bad you would want to play it, buying a used 360 or PS3 along with a copy of the game is an option. The good thing about it (and physical media and consoles) is that you can just sell it after you are done with the game (and the prices of PS3s and 360s and their games are pretty constant by now). Then you won't have an extra console cluttering up your place, and if you ever think you'll get the urge to return to it, you can buy the console and the game again some years down the line (and can even back up your save with a usb, at least on PS3). You probably will come close to net zero spending (depending how much you want to shop around for deals, and how quickly you want to sell it again), but should be easy enough to get way with spending around 10 bucks or so only.

I'm not really interested in playing racing games besides Mario Kart and I really hate driving in videogames xD
But I played Re-Volt and Split/Second in my childhood and loved them so much <3

I love Mario Kart, I see why you would prefer that over any other racing game, Mario Kart Wii FTW!!!

Flat screen, burnout: paradise and FlatOut 2 are my favorites. A really great, probably more unique experience as well is Gran Turismo 7 on the psvr2

My boy, nothing beats good old FlatOut or Burnout, phenomenal racing game genres and my favorite games in terms of destruction racing. Still never tried Gran Turismo yet, I really should try that as well.

I love racing games, mostly when they hit the sweet spot between arcade and sim.
No Forza games in your racing collection?

I do like arcade racing games too, but I enjoy realism a bit if possible, I've never bought a Forza game since they are so expensive and not that promising in terms of character and gameplay. If I ever got around to it I would like to try Forza Horizon 5, just for the fun of it but I doubt I'd like it all that much.

Eh, FH5 is nice. I still enjoy doing the weekly challenges. This was my race yesterday in the team trial. Not too challenging but that's the price for performing well. ;D

Would you say it is better than FH4 and has better customization and more cars?

Can't compare it as FH5 is my first Horizon. But I have 790 unique cars and I dare say that this amount is pretty satisfying.

WHAT? Do they all sound and feel good too? No way...

You'll always find people complaining about something. And cars often share the same engine, so they share the same sound too in that case. But nobody prevents you from using mods to switch motor sounds if you feel the need.

"Feel good" is even more subjective. Not all cars are competitive, even with heavy tuning. But there certainly is a huge variety. You will always have many options (if you managed to unlock the cars).

I remember Burnout Paradise being one of my favorite games back in the day. Had a good radio station and everything. Unfortunately from what I have seen the community here is, was and always will be pretty dead for such a large volume of traffic. This is due to a lot of different things working together not the least of which being that, from my estimates, around 80% of the accounts are multi-account level 0 bots just farming free games. It's good to see people engaging though.

I love the Burnout Paradise Remastered soundtrack, I've basically removed every single song from playing except for Paradise City and some Alice In Chains song, I didn't even know there was an Alice In Chains song in the game.

I try to engage with the community when I can, I adore this place a lot since it opens up for a lot more discussion than SteamTrades. When I ever have some spare cash I'll definitely make some giveaways too to give back to you people, I have some really good puzzle ideas in store too and I want to try if that works out. I've been wondering if all the same people who comment "Thank you" on all these different giveaways are bots too, I feel like if you overdo it you make yourself seem like the complete opposite -- a bot. Still really new to this Steam Gifting scene and it takes some time to get used to but people here are really nice, just like yourself. I'm glad I enjoy my stay!

I love racing games but nowadays they're either another boring barren motorfest game, or another barely functional bugged sim despite all the money thrown at it with every iteration in any series, and then you have the odd hope of the bunch in the shape of NFS which is hit-or-miss and right now leans towards miss... The genre is dead.
This guy says it all.
(idk about Wreckfest)

This is a hilarious video, freaking A.

Funny you pointed out Wreckfest, the game may look a bit odd but it doesn't disappoint in my opinion, still a great FlatOut feeling game, the damage model is probably the closest you'll get to like BeamNG.drive or something.

Loved the original Race Driver Grid (2008), was like the perfect blend of arcade and simulator and loved it's career mode where even picking your team mate would make a big difference for it. None of the sequels really was as good to me. (did enjoy Grid Legends much more than the 2019 one tho, even tho it's career mode was just silly)

That's what I really seemed to like about Racedriver Grid (2008) is that the damage model was really amazing for its time and it really sold the simulator aspect of the game while as the handling was also pretty realistic although perfect for an arcade racers. I'd love to try that game soo much now that people recommend it. The anguish that is excitement, good grief.

I think the most memorable car game for me was Need for Speed Most Wanted(the old one), played countless hours on it, I remember having a lot of fun switching the lamborghini or whatever to some crappy car, or a big ass garbage truck and driving at 200 mph, and there's people still modding cars to this day. Surprised it's on no stores.

Other than that I've played through pretty much every NFS game other than the newest one, my first racing game if I remember right I think was GT Racing 97 (It took me years to remember this one), I kept confusing it with Screamer, was playing Re-Volt with my cousin as a kid, but there's other great games like mario kart, driver, burnout, flatout, grid, midnight city, crazy taxi and some f1 games. Would be nice to eventually try gran turismo, find the easy mode for asseto corsa, and start playing some forza games too, but need more time for all that xD.

But yeah by far the NFS series made the biggest impact, I have fond memories of NFS SE, to HP I , II and III, Porsche Unleashed, and the newer Hot Pursuit which I enjoyed for how beautiful it was at a time, but also didn't enjoy since there wasn't any real customization, NFS Heat was bringing it back but it felt off, and I think they did pretty bad with Unbound. I honestly think they should just relaunch NFS World properly and keep to it and expand the world.

Need for Speed Most Wanted this, Most Wanted that, I feel like I NEED to try it sooner or later now. I think Burnout Paradise and Mario Kart will be my all time favorite racing games since they are just burned into my memory. I enjoyed NFS: Hot Pursuit on the PS3 so much too and I think it is one of the better games in the later years down the road after the PS2 era.

Yes, Most Wanted, Carbon and ProStreet...the golden age of EA / Blackbox

Most Wanted is the only racing game I played because of the story. I don't think any other racing game's story comes close. Nothing was more satisfying than winning my ride back from that cheating punk Razor. :-D
I wish they had done more with the story after Carbon.

I started with NFS II SE and the varied locations was what drew me into the series. Waiting for the day they return to their roots.

Evolution GT A forgotten racing sim that I like. It has a unique role-play system where you assign skill points to your driver to make him better at some aspects like braking or accelerating. It has an intimidation skill where if you drive very close to the rear of another car for a while, the other driver will get intimidated and eventually lose control and the same could happen to you if an opponent follows your car closely. You also get to choose from different sponsors and gear (gloves, suit, helmet, and shoes) and each has its own effect on the driver. I bought the disk from Amazon UK and ripped the game, it is still quite fun.
I just realized that in the US, it is named Corvette Evolution GT and I don't know why since the game features many cars not just the Corvette.

That sounds pretty cool, for how old the game is I think it was quite unique for its time. Did you rip the game directly from the CD-ROM somehow? I shop at thrift stores often and I always see so many cool racing games and other games I'd want to play but I've never been sure how PC DVD's work. Last time I saw Trackmania ESWC. It's cool you've been enjoying older games as much as I have, sometimes I forget older titles even exist when I play games that have come out in the past few years.

The way the game did it is still unique by today's standards as you get to control the driver's skills and gear but not the car. I like thrift shopping too, got me some cool games and indie movies back in the day. With games, it's not a problem, as you said I rip it using an external hard drive and a free software tool. I'm actually on a quest to play every 2000-2010 game that interests me.
