Unfortunately there is no way to tell if a key is used or not, if you try to activate it on an account that owns the game, it says you own the game before checking anything else, if the account doesn't own the game it then gets activated on the account.

If you haven't used the keys they should work fine. But if you aren't sure just make invite only or group GA with description that you aren't sure if the key works, entering this GA users agrees to delete this GA if the key is used or invalid. But still is kind of risky.

We don't enforce custom rules. Statements like that are basically void. And they are dishonest, since you imply people would agree to something by entering. They don't. If you have a key and don't know if it will work, it's probably best to give it away by other means. For instance on the forum, or to a friend via chat.

Correct me if i'm wrong I though "invite only or group GA" was made for that very reason. I have seen some users that did and i sincerely don't see anything dishonest about it. Also thats why I said "that is kind of risky" since not everyone will agree to that. But if against the rules i'm good.

Even if is "invite only or group GA"

It's dishonest because if you say "by entering you agree..." that's just not true. You don't agree automatically just by entering the giveaway. If you instead ask if the winner would agree to deletion in case of a bad key, that's a whole different story.

i remember in the past custom rules could be done in private or group giveaways. I get that it is not possible any more, or is it?

This is very solid idea.
And yes if you aren't sure the key works then you definitely don't want to make it a public giveaway.
@Everyone Just an FYI - Some people will make a giveaway and then put in the description something like this --> "if you enter this giveaway you agree to delete it if the key doesn't work" . Putting something like that in the giveaway description doesn't actually do anything. The winner doesn't have to agree to delete anything just cause that's what someone listed in the description.

i usually do that mostly cause of You, Support.
also, learnt from Fyantastic-o and -even before- from Keo, to put the line you're saying. there's a "catch", also, in those words:
you agree to delete
is wrong, and you're right. but if you slightly change that in something like:
would be nice if you'd agree to delete
then you have a good solution. what was meant to be a "rule" (wrong one, cause, as you've said, "doesn't do nothing") becomes a more soft and polite request. still "doesn't do nothing", but you have greater chances to fix it, if things go bad (and this happens. even with keys you think are "very good". happened to me, and 95% of times was 100% my fault :P)

I want to take a second and apologize. Just so you know the FYI in my last comment wasn't directed at you.

sorry, Fate, but apologies rejected!
it was well understood here. sometimes is just hard to get the "right tone" of a written sentence. i'm always doing everything here with You, Staff, as a first thought. cause you deserve all our respect. even more than that, if you ask me :D
that said, it happened 100 times or more that i wanted to comment on giveaways with the famigerate "you agree to delete" in description, so was hoping to reach a more wider "audience" writing that here... ok, i'm also very very lazy.
now, are both rejected, our apologies? :P

I just blacklist them. They're clearly using a loophole in the rules.
Comment has been collapsed.
ouch, you should have a big blacklist, then :D
my opinion only, eh, but you shouldn't. plenty of us still don't know that "you agree to delete", as Fate wrote, "doesn't actually do anything".
i wouldn't be glad to get blacklisted for something i don't know, but, again, this is only imo.
plus, i think there's no loophole, cause is not actually a rule, just something that the giveaway creator thinks to be a rule
anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts (so, now i can blacklist ya! :P)

Don't you think it makes it worse if they think it does something though?
If a GA creator doesn't think that line does anything, then they're not trying to exploit a "loophole", they're just (perhaps a little rudely) making a request. If a GA does think it does something though, then he or she is knowingly trying to get around being responsible for delivering what was given away in a way.
Personally though, I'd rather see old / unusual games show up for giveaway now and then, with the risk of them not working.

you usually find those lines when the giveaway creator makes a lot of GAs, with a higher risk of something could go wrong. also, you're right, this thread was something about "old" and finding a replacement key could be hard if not impossible.
that said, and frankly, i put that line in all my public GAs. i do that just to let peeps entering know kinda something like: "i do a lot of giveaways, and something could go wrong".
when that happened, we (me and the winner) always found a way to solve the problem, thou :D

Well, that's why i said that people are exploiting a loophole in the rules: there's nothing to prevent deleting giveaways for duped keys, so the user will remain in perfectly good standing even though there's a feedback system in place.
Anyway i blacklist them simply because i don't want to comply with this particular custom rule (especially when it's not asked, but rather forced), so i don't want to pass as the "asshole guy" who wants to release a negative feedback. Nothing personal, tbh.

I don't know, but probably i'd be rather pissed. It just doesn't seem right, considering that there's a feedback system in place. Either way i simply don't enter those kinds of giveaway.

Thanks ppl. Excellent idea to set giveaway to small group, with correct description of course, on an unknown status of a Steam Key. Perfect IDEA!!!

I concur with the others... While many people are understanding and realize that these things happen, others could careless what the circumstances were and dispute it. Save yourself the hassle, or a possible suspension, for creating a public giveaway with a knowingly possible used key. It wouldn't be fair to the winner for one, and you would likely have to shell out money for another copy if it came down to it.

I guess that's the main purpose of the Orphans key thread ^^ As i'm not sure key is good or not i drop it there.
If you don't want to give it to ninjas or bot you can use the "First reply first get it" policy and then give the key in steam pm or on an old ga of that people.
Still, no cv out of there. Just kind share ^^

Check in your licenses when did you activated the game. You might have activated it already it's just steam bugged out.

Maybe for the public one, you can create Invite Only here in your thread (or create new one)
Just tell the winner, winner must be agree that you will delete the giveaway if it's not valid anymore
Write in the description too, just in case they forget about this thread.
Just don't create public, unless you sure it's work.
Cheers

If you don't mind I'm interested in participating in any such GA with the intention of deleting it if the key doesn't work.

Folks bug me to play Rocket League with them all the time despite me not owning it, so I'd gladly take the risk on the giveaway and delete if necessary. I was thinking there was a way to check keys but I was mistaken and thinking of checking which game it was by throwing it at an account that owns everything... silly me.

I,have also had a few problems with keys in the past. My solution was to buy another key to replace the bad one.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, you'd think that right? But the reality is that if "everyone is just joking" there's no way to know who actually is serious, thus it's just not worth adding to the grey area and getting suspended for X amount of time.
We're all funny boys 'n girls but gotta follow the rulsies.

I have bought new keys to replace bad keys, on occasion.
That said, I post in nearly all giveaways these days that I believe the keys are good but they are generally a few years old, and are therefore automatically at risk. I ask that people agree to delete the giveaway if things don't work out. I know that's not binding, but I think it's a fair post because keys can be cancelled for a variety of reasons. Over the course of over 850 giveaways there have been a few unexpectedly bad keys. Sometimes I can get them replaced, sometimes not; I've asked a few people to delete the GAs, and they have all agreed.
Because I feel bad about this sort of thing, I usually check their wish lists on Steam and try to give them something they'll like to make up for the GA slip.

I found 2 keys for Rocket League in one of my old excel files. I tried to activate them on my Steam account since I got this game and it shows the message You already own this game and later it shows a message "Steam couldn't install the game" something like that. That does mean that the keys will work for sure, because I want to make a giveaway?
I hope you understood what I ment ;)
