this has probably happened to many of you before, but i bought an early access game and was pretty happy with it. then development slowed way down, then the developer announced "it’s 1.0! it’s out of early access! it’s done!" . . . but it still feels unfinished. out of early access in this case meant no more updates, even though there was plenty of stuff i expected to still see addressed. i had a lot of fun with it and don’t regret my purchase, but i’m sad to see it not get finished.

while i was enjoying the game and excited for the game’s future, i wrote a positive review recommending it. that review was marked helpful by 1 of 2 people and has no comments. i no longer recommend the game since i feel it wasn’t finished, so i want to post a review not recommending it. there doesn’t seem to be any way for me to leave my existing review in place and also write another, so i guess i want to end up with a negative review since that's my current opinion. how should i go about that? i don't care about the 1 of 2 people finding it helpful or the 0 comments, and it shouldn't really say early access review anymore, so maybe i delete the old one and start over?

how should i go from existing positive review to a negative one?

View Results
delete old review and write new one
edit old review to replace with new one, with no mention of old one
edit old review, leave old text there and add new stuff
something else

Would be nice if you could mention what game you're referring to.

didn’t want to call it out, but since you asked and it's not a user: gnomoria

Awww, Gnomoria, one of the games I fell in love with too once upon a time...
The developer left the game with a workshop hub full of mods that should have fixed what he was not able to.
Unfortunately, he decided also that mods would have been basically part of the development, and probably left the project as it now is.

Although this happened and I do blame the developer's laziness, the game was incredibly fun before the release, years ago, without things I wanted and that will never come.
Imo, if you recommended it then, you had fun. Updates only improved it, so it's still fun. You just want to avenge the game by giving the developer a negative feedback, but giving the game a negative review would only make the game itself suffer (less mods developers, less incentive for the dev to come back, nothing you would get from it).

It's not like I'm telling you what to do, I will never and you are of course free to do whatever you want.
My opinion is that if I had fun once and the game has only improved since, I would not give it a negative review.

EDIT: You can comment your review with new opinions. I know, it won't be the same as writing it in the review itself, but the review will keep its "early access review" state and still show the differences between then and now.

I'd edit your current review, add extra bits while leaving old text in place.

i like that, but i wonder if it would stay marked as an early access review and whether it would count toward recent reviews.

You now feel it isn't finished but when you knew it wasn't you thought it was worth full price? Did the developers actually took things from the game? Because otherwise I don't understand your sudden change of view.

that expectation is very important. i had my fun (as you might guess by the number of hours logged), but i did so expecting the little annoyances to go away. without that expectation the annoyances feel bigger.

before the updates stopped coming and then it moved out of early access, there was the expectation that the unfinished stuff would get finished. now that expectation is gone, and i don't recommend buying an unfinished game that says it’s finished. i’d still recommend an unfinished game that says it’s unfinished if it was getting regular and / or frequent updates, like this one was when i recommended it.

I'd remove and make a new one. Since the content is radically different (opposite of the original), it should start with a clean slate. Not to mention that reviews that are edited after a long while are always suspicious as vote-bait-and-switches.

Just add a new review, if you must. I have seen a game with 3 reviews by the same user, all at different points in development (was early access as well, but don't remember the name).

When I altered my review for PAYDAY 2 I strikethrough'd the old review and wrote new text above it.

There's no shame in editing a game review to reflect its development progress
