quantum break. i cant fault it. remedy has genuine trouble with boss fights, and sure some criticised QB for not having enough shooting, but their storytelling and pacing and world building was on point in QB.

also hellblade, remember me, the witcher, soma, oxenfree and the wolf among us

these games arent necessarily the BEST of the best in terms of gameplay, and there are lots of games i really LOVE as complete experiences, but when it comes purely to narrative aspects (which is what the thread is about) i find these to be the ones that really got to me.

I wouldn't have pushed through Remember Me's shitty gameplay if it wasn't for the story.

Same here. Horrible combat system (Arkham combat done wrong) and mediocre climbing/platforming, but the story kept me going. It makes it a decent game overall, even with lackluster gameplay.

I think I made it 3/4,before I finally gave up.
Normally, Iā€™m other way around, gameplay is my primary concern, far more than story or graphics. Remember Me was probably the first game I played with crappy gameplay

I often tend to go for story-focussed games. I accept (and in some cases even embrace) less gameplay, like in walking simulators and interactive movies. But bad gameplay will of course lessen the experience in any game. That being said, Remember Me's gameplay wasn't very good, but I also wouldn't say it was total garbage. Mediocre is the word I'd probably use overall. I can do mediocre for a good story. ;)

oh, don't get me wrong, there are games that are pretty much pure story. ye olde text adventures, plenty of point & click games. But those don't involve a lot of tedium between story bits.

I found that Remember Me's gameplay kept getting in the way of the story, and that was a problem.

Sure. I still considered it worth it for me. But yeah, you're not wrong.

based on storyline:

mass effect 1 (the rest are a mess)
dragon age 1 (same as ME)
witcher 1-2-3
bioshock 1 (bs 2 was the same and infinite is terrible)
dishonored 1-2
baldur's gate 2
the long dark (still not finished but it's doing great so far)
borderlands 2 (1 was ok but too simple, presequel and 3 are 100% trash)

Disco Elysium, Planescape: Torment, The Cat Lady, Gabriel Knight 1-3, The Longest Journey saga (all three games, but especially the first one), Grim Fandango, Night in the Woods, Oxenfree (an important notion: it should be played twice, NG+ is compulsory in this case), The Wolf Among Us, Blade Runner (it's finally available for purchase on GOG), Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, The Witcher 2-3. I also absolutely adore simplistic, yet beautiful narrative of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. Also basically anything by Wadjet Eye.

Why is NG+ important in Oxenfree? Obviously I haven't gone beyond finishing it one time.

As you probably remember, characters are stuck in an infinite loop; NG+ allows to break the cycle and actually finish the story. This was introduced several months after the initial release, so if you played Oxenfree early, there might not have been an NG+ yet.

Ahh, that explains it! Yes, I think I did play it early.

Hm, I would have to check again. But I am halfway sure that even with the second ending - where you send yourself a message to the past - the loop still triggers at one point. Because i read the forum and the wiki up and done to find the answer to the questions: Is leave possible? And I think there is no ending where this has been conclusively the case.

Still a good game for the story-telling and the ARG

Also would not exclude the possibility that there is still another ending noone has found so far.

Does it though? If my memory serves me, not going to the island is the way not to get stuck. Unless these are alternative realities, and you just create yet another one, where Alex is free - but you haven't actually changed a thing for your original Alex. Basically, it's up to your interpretation (once again, if my memory serves me).
But yes, still an awesome game either way.

Assassins Creed 2 & Brotherhood

Very few of the recent games have good storylines IMO, most are recycled cliches

Not my number one favorite but since no one mentioned it yet I'm gonna say Silent Hill 2. Shout out to Silent Hill Shattered Memories which is a masterpiece but often forgotten. Would love to see a remake/remaster of this one since neither the wii or the ps2 (and certainly not the psp) could handle it very well.

silent hill 2 is really a masterpiece in terms of storyline. It's the only game that makes me feel the pain of characters .

Thumbs up for Silent Hill 2. Shattered Memories story is good but the game is forgotten mainly because the gameplay sucks so much, it takes all the horror away because it's just on rails chasing scenes with the blandest monsters ever. And the big twist at the end kinda ruins some of the psychological questions you have to answer during the game.

Deja Vu

  • Of course, no good mystery begins with all or even half of the details, and Deja Vu shoots for just that. In the start of the game, you wake up in a bathroom stall with no recollection of who you are or how you got there. A little exploring reveals that you're in a bar called Joe's, there's a dead man upstairs in the office, and it looks like you're about to be framed for a murder you didn't commit (or at least, don't remember you committed).

Best story line? Hard to say, but a few I really liked were:
Final Fantasy 6-10
Grandia 1 and 2
Persona 4 (PS2 version)
Undertale

I'd have to say:

Subnautica (It is a sort of non-linear linear story).

At first, you have no idea, but then as you slowly come across more and more things, you begin to get guided towards small goals, which slowly turn into bigger goals. Absolutely love this game, and the story. The lore, world, and story are all very well done.

(Subnautica: Below Zero Is currently in development, I bought it on release day, so far it's shaping up to be pretty good too)

Metro:

Metro 2033, and Metro: Last Light

Absolutely amazing stories, told in an amazing way. You do have to be in the right 'mood' for them to really hit though. Haven't played exodus yet, maybe get back to me in about a month or two :P

Didn't really like throne of bhaal, by that time the "twist" and the ending are extremely expected. I and II are definitely top 5 games ever for me. Also NWN2 mask of the betrayer had a great story. Planescape torment, IWD.

Can we bring back forgotten realms?

I don't think anyone has mentioned Firewatch yet. It was short, but I loved the story and characters.

What Remains of Edit Finch was pretty interesting as well.

I absolutely loved Prince of Persia Sands of Time and especially Warrior Within. That game rocked with alternate endings, great music, great mechanics, time travel and combat and damn great rocking soundtrack. I loved PoP 4 too the one that a love story with a different hero. Great corrupted to restored worlds, mechanism, love story, character interaction, romance and sad ending. Loved Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Serious Sam 2 for sheer mayhem and bosses + humor and parodies it offered on alien worlds.

Yakuza 1 kiwami, The last of us, The Talos Principle, Half-life 1 & 2, Undertale, Metro 2033 and all of Kan Gao games (Freebird games, he made To the moon).
Honorable mention to Titanfall 2, because I didn't expect such a good experience both in gameplay and in storyline, and to Serious Sam (still waiting, Croteam!)

  • The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind <- absolutely best :)
  • Age of Decadence (but in this game you can beat whole game without getting any knowledge about game world, to get full story you should play via science/speaking/exploring/etc, not with powerful combatant character).
  • Tyranny <- very interest and unusual storyline
