I play on a laptop, got the same problem. Here's a list of a few nice games that should work just fine for him: D&D: Chronicles of Mystara, Hammerwatch, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Portal 2, Team Fortress 2. I'm just saying games that i own, but theres a lot more if you search. :)

Additionally you can try Half life 2, but i prefer goldsource mods (half life 1) over source mods (half life 2). And Hl2 mods can be heavier and more unstable for your buddy.

There are plenty more mods out there you can find on moddb or some other websites... The money spent in half life is priceless! The amount of gametime coming out of it is pretty damn good, not to mention that team fortress classic is also another great game (yes the original team fortress game), old school games like these two is where it's at.

Alien Swarm (me and a friend played this a lot when it released, free to play), Awesomenauts, Castle Crashers, Dungeon Defenders, Hammerwatch, Killing Floor, Krater, Magicka, Monaco, Nation Red, Realm of the Mad God (my friends and I play this one a lot, free to play), Sanctum, Shoot Many Robots (another fun game I played with a friend) Terraria (once again, another good game me and friends play). Not sure how many of those will work, but at least some of them should.
