I hate that system, I think that points should stay.

I really like the idea Cult, but my concern is that people can create fake giveaways of some Black Ops and other pre-order or very well desired games just to "force" people to spend their entries on those and generate less competition to giveaways they want to win and to annoy people.
Even if the entries are given back if fake, people could still miss some good giveaways because of tricks like this.

+1 for points. But points system does need an overhaul.

I'm new, yes, but one point that got me interested was in fact the points system, as it felt somehow balanced.
Yes, there are things like the Dirt3 stuff, Humble Bundles and other free things, but that will probably go down in time. The Dirt-promotion is nearing its end, the Humble Bundle 3 is over. Most will run out of keys in time.
While the point system might benefit from some refinements (like points for the actual giveaway, like already said), I think it's the right way. You have to think about what to spend points for, and I honestly like that.

There are more reasons to create a fake giveaway rather than just generating points. Some people out there, and I'd wager there are quite a few of them, do it just for the "lulz" of getting people to waste points on an 'expensive' game. The only thing this would change is there would be more trolls doing it for the lulz, rather than people simply doing it to cheat the system.
IMO point are fine. It's just too easy to abuse the system as it is right now, and thats something we have to change.

This sounds like an awesome idea :D more likely to get games, rather than 2 wins every 300+ giveaways, it would be closer to 2 wins every 30 giveaways, big difference if you ask me, a much, much better difference... But what about invites?

Seems like a bad idea simply because it means that say, a MW3 gift is worth the same as say, Portal, so everyone's just going to rush the MW3 one and the Portal one will get bugger all entries.

Well sometimes people would rather enter for the $1 dlc than the $50 game, based on their tastes. For instance, I wouldn't mind spending/using a point on Magicka DLC over games I wouldn't play much like Dead Island. (Unless I co-oped with a friend).

Down with points. Up with what Cult said!
edit: How about this? You start with 5 max entries. For every PUBLIC giveaway that you have where the gift is received you get an additional entry up to the max of 10.
(numeric values can be tweaked, these are examples)

I like the idea, and there are quite a few good ideas being talked about in SG chat right now. It's still early days for the site, so I can't see why trying a few different methods of entering giveaways couldn't work. Maybe a beta page to test it all?

Yes, get rid of points... i've registered here less than 2 weeks ago and already accrued tons of point, more than i can spend. It's not working.
I agree with 10 entries or "tickets" max, 1 regenerating avery day; my suggestion will be to still differentiate between low priced games/DLC and full price ones... set the entry price at 1 ticket for the former, 2 tickets for the latter.
Also, how about giving a little bonus to people actively giving away?! Even a little raise of the cap to 12 would be nice for those who have positive feedback.

It´s curious that I didn´t even thought aboout getting rid of the current point system but in it´s disadvantages or ways to improve it. I like your suggestion. Although some things would need to be discussed if applied (Finding the right number of entries per day, time of regeneration per entry [Maybe you could increase the limit per day but lower the regeneration time], see if private giveaways would count, etc..)

The main idea behind this is not to give you guys a better chance to win, but to eliminate fakes. What needs to be done is people should simply have to have a game in stored in their gifts to give away. No more fake giveaways that shoot up the amount of points. Less work on admins.

I like the idea, mainly because it probably would help with the "fakers" situation.
I also like the idea of people actually having the game in stock before creating a giveaway.
But how would that work? Could their steam inventory automatically be scanned in some way? What about people wanting to give away games from sites like GamerGate that are redeemable on steam?

Is ban them altogether. I suggest everyone gets 10 entries max. An entry is regenerated every 24 hours. This will get rid of all fake giveaways, as there would be no point to making fake ones. It will also keep people from entering things they aren't all that interested in.
