I know that the title is a bit strange, but I could not think of anything better - sorry.

Last week was broadcast the first episode of The Grand Tour - which is the new project of Clarkson,Hammond and May after their departures from Top Gear. Today I was able to watch it, and they exceeded my expectations - pure fun.

So here is my old Top Gear style train - in other words not a train:)

If you do not know what I'm talking, you can find here and here.:)

Maybe I'm too big fan, but I liked the show especially after which Top Gear became after the three left.

Is it as goofy as it used to be? I liked Top Gear, because it was like a car oriented comedy, not just a auto moto show.

I should really start to look up the older episodes. I'm not really interested in cars, but all the hype around the show, the outtakes, the screen captures - they were genuinely funny and entertaining :)

Yes, and especially the episodes that they go into other countries.

If you haven't watched Top Gear on Youtube yet, it's a good place to start. Their channel has a good amount of stuff from the older seasons. Here's a few classics :)

Rolling a Reliant Robin
Killing a Toyota Part 1
Limousine Challenge Part 1

It's a shame that finalgear.com isn't around anymore, they used to have all Top Gear seasons. The forums are still up though, but I don't know if there are any links available for old full episodes.

There were a couple of years when I thought Top Gear hit a sweet spot and the show was really great, but the more popular it became, the more formulaic it became, and it was already in a rut well before they had to reboot the series. Of course, it doesn't help that outside the show Clarkson has become more and more of an arsehole, and Hammond more and more of a sycophant...

Anyway, it seems like the new-old show is just more of the same, so I won't be bothering with it. It's a shame, because the natural dynamic between the three of them can be really entertaining - but at best there's only about 10% of the show where they're acting remotely genuinely, and the rest is so obviously scripted that it's nearly impossible for it to raise a laugh from me.

I guess things will change, remember that at the moment they are trying to attract old fans. Moreover, the fact that they are no longer on TV and maybe have a much larger budget will lead to something new. Only time will tell.

Fame can definitely do this with people - sad but true.

Still it is a show about cars, I do not see how it could be very different. At the same time I think they want to keep their old fans.
We'll see what they can do.

I personally prefer Fifth Gear with Tiff Needell and Vicki Butler-Henderson, who were presenters of the old old Top Gear, beginning in 1977, before the studio format relaunch in 2002 of what you are calling the old Top Gear. Most of the original Top Gear production team left the BBC in 2002 to work on Fifth Gear, which retains the fun, honest, hard-driving car reviews and magazine type stories by genuinely talented motorsports drivers (Needell has done many 24 Hours of Le Mans races, and British Touring Car superstar Jason Plato is another presenter), but doesn't go in for the crazy project gimmicks (such as trying to waterproof a car and sail it across the English Channel) that the Clarkson, Hammond, May show developed into.

I'm sorry, as I said the title is a bit strange, but I could not think of anything better. And for me are first Top Gear, old Top Gear and new Top Gear. I know not very well expressed.:)
Yes the trio did just that with Top Gear, and many people do not like that at times the comedy comes first, but I do not think it makes show bad, just different. Moreover, there are some youtube channels that "simply" test cars, so they look for a way to be different.

No, your title was fine. I never even saw what I called the "old old Top Gear", so I also think of "old Top Gear" the same way you do. I just came up with that as a way to try to figure out how to explain that the Fifth Gear guys were involved with Top Gear once upon a time.

I own them all, but thank you for the not-train anyhow.:)

I've never watched Top Gear before, but I have read that the new iteration of it is quite poor compared to the "original crew".

watched first 2 eps and the thing i come away from it thinking the most is that while, yes, its funny and its great to see the three back together again, the whole thing feels OVER-PRODUCED. top gear was always a scripted show, but this feels like its.. well not a step, but a good running jump too far. They also seem to be a little bit over enthusiastic and act a little too over the top to the point where they dont feel natural. I hope its just first series jitters, but i wonder if amazon has exerted a bit of pressure too, because this is the kind of thing american audiences want. Those three guys were at their best (in my opinion) when they were clowning around together, pitting their skills (or lack of :D) against one another while talking about...well, anything really - even occasionally cars, if they find the time :) Watching the last episodes military bit just felt... well i laughed, it was certainly funny, but it felt too forced.

Before I read your comment, I thought that the fact that now they are online will give them more freedom and the shown can become even better. But what you say makes more sense, namely that Amazon will seek maximum return on investment.I hope you're wrong sorry :)

My thoughts exactly.
But maybe that's what the producers want!?
I think of it like the "pro-wrestling shows", but I'm into cars, not into shirtless men in tights.

This is how I feel, the show is so scripted, fake and over the top in recent years I can no longer watch it.

I have not seen the new program or the new presenters on Top Gear to compare though.

They began to talk about their new project almost immediately after leaving the BBC. But this is normal they are known and have serious connections in the industry.

In all honesty, Top Gear's way overrated. Everything other than the adventures are so damn average. All they did was get people, who developed a chemistry... I guess mindless mocking of May is humorous for people now. At least they could've been clever...

It is a car show, but you're right my favorites episodes too are when they traveling in other countries. I guess that's what you mean by "adventures":)

Well, not even that. The most memorable adventure was when they built their own motor-homes and travelled around the countryside, completing tasks.

Yep I really liked them traveling across different countries in supercars and them making fun of each other. I didn't like much else tbh apart from a few showcases. I'm really tired of the celebrity/reasonable priced car test thing and yeah most of the jokes are lame.

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah. That's why I think most people like it so much. They remember the really good moments, since they are... well, really damn good.
But at the same time, when they have the filler and the mediocre stuff there, people are willing to sit through it to see the cool stuff again. And since the cool stuff is always at the end, it'll look even better overall. They're smart for sure.

You can definitely tell that they are not under the scrutiny of the BBC.
I know it is scripted, many of the jokes are bad, but I enjoy it... that's me. My girlfriend can't stand them and her reactions make the experience ever funnier :D
