Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.
Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on Thursday.
The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change.

With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country in mourning as the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
"The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

All the Queen's children travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision.
Her grandson, Prince William, is also there, with his brother, Prince Harry, on his way.

She would not be the longest reigning monarch, that would still befall to Ludwig the XIV, the "sun king".

Ma’amalade sandwich Your Majesty?.

as someone who lives in the UK - i have been told this like 100 times - and got rung up on the phone 3 times just for members of my family to tell me the queen is not dead

edit: i fell sorry but 96 year olds don't live forever

edit: sad for the death and so much will change and she will be missed

Yeah maybe, but all family members, even harry coming in this time, could imply it's bad this time (and for real).
It's world news now, thought maybe why to share it.

5 minutes ago — Queen Elizabeth II, England's longest-reigning monarch, died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland
Buckingham Palace has just released the following statement: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

She would not be the longest reigning monarch, that would still befall to Ludwig the XIV, the "sun king".

Ludwig reigned for 72 years, and Elizabeth barely beat out the previous second and third longest reigning monarchs by only about 100 days, making her very close to being either of both 1st or 4th place. As a more firm accomplishment, she did manage to become the longest reigning monarch among British nobility, beating Victoria out by 7 years. I also seem to recall a trivia bit about her being among the oldest (in age, not just tenure) monarch, but Google's too obsessed with results on her tenure to pop up anything useful on that.

And how can one really "reign" when they are 5 years old though like Ludwig? Still much more proper creds to Elisabeth, she should have retired or cut down a lot of work, especially when her health started to decline last year.

sorry, i can't give people credit, when they don't have the character or miss the point, when it's about time to step down and cling on their power, poor Charles had to wait forever

IMO, there's only one important person alive that is world famous, with historical relevance, and from the oldest generation: the Dalai Lama. Once he is gone, it will be the definite end of an era.

The brits apparently have a thing for having an op ready for when the monarch takes an eternal nap.All the announcements, who goes where, says or does what along with the burial procession details & other such stuff is decided years in advance.

Then, I'll be next.

But don't count on it.
The "death flag" may fall on the "who's next?”👑

We are saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
Her love for the United Kingdom and her desire to bring our ties with Japan closer than ever was evident.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Queen Elizabeth II and to the people of the United Kingdom at this difficult time.

So far there is more confusion than anyone shows condolences.
I am more surprised too, so it seems to be a standardized statement.🤔😞

She really seemed like the one constant leader of the modern times, that's an impressively long reign, and a pretty respectfully long life. And I thought my grandma was old because she died at 93.
Well, RIP, I guess. Not a fan of kings and queens still being a thing, but I can feel empathy for the death of an old person.
