I fell for a Discord scam where the person claims that he wrongfully flagged my account for fraud that happened with him. He then tells that I have to contact a steam admin on discord to sort it out. I very foolishly followed what the scammer admin told and gave away the access to my account to him. He has now changed all of the credentials of my account making me unable to login.

I have raised a steam support ticket to recover my account. I just wanted to know if I can do anything else to get it back. I also wanted to let others know that such scams can happen. I advise you to not link your steam account to your discord ID. This is how he got to know about me. These scammers join popular discord gaming servers and search for people likely to fall for their scam. I hope I get my account back.

Edit: Steam support contacted me and I have got my account back. I have enabled steam authenticator. Thanks for all the replies. I'll be more careful now.

Sorry that happened to you, I think Steam Support is your best chance right now. If you have the necessary information to prove you are the original owner, they should definitely be able to help you get it back. 🙏🏻

I disagree that you should not link your Steam and Discord information. The only thing this does is enable people to identify you across multiple platforms, which is common information to share with other people. Phishing occurs all the time and in the end it's up to people to catch on and not provide critical information in random DMs. You could choose to keep all your accounts completely isolated from each other to reduce risk but I think that's quite a high price to pay for something you can easily avoid in the future, especially now that you know how they operate.

adding to that, if you bought directly from Steam Store and can prove that it was your bank account to do that, then it should be painless process

I am sure that you will get your account back.
Just need to be patient for several days.

But same as Dan I don't agree that the problem was you linking your Steam account to Discord.
It was user error on your side thinking you need to contact Steam support through Discord.

Also from hearing other stories from other people I keep at least 1 or 2 receipts from purchases that I have made on steam using my Creditcard.
So in the event of theft or anything, it will be a non headache to provide Steam support with evidence that this is my account.
Steam will ask you to give proof that you own this account so best to prepare your evidence.

Good luck.

Nothing new. Luckilly steam support do it's job although it may take few days.
This is old thread - but somebody described whole process:
https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/GIPG4/steam-account-stolen-update-recovered

Also remember that if they have your steam account - they also have access to all sites that you can log in via steam. If you are afraid that they may do something bad here - ask support for suspension and then after you will have controll of your steam account again - ask for being unsuspended.

Sorry for your problem, steam will help you soon.

All "staff requests" for account informations, special outside of the original plattform, are scams.
Since over 20 years.....

So nothing need to be changed besides that people should think before they do something.

Legit dumbass question, is there even such a thing as an official steam discord? I would imagine there'd never be anything official, especially handling reports, from valve with offsite means, the security risks are just too great.

I agree on not linking steam and discord though.

Sucks that this happened to you and I hope things work out in your favour. Best of luck. And even if for many people the scam was obvious, even the most prepared folks can be hit by one, so I hope sharing your story helps prevent others from falling for it.

No, there isn't any. They have their own website with forums and employees.

Steam support deals with tickets and warnings through its own support site/system, exclusively.
As you say, any external site can be compromised, plus you aren't able to confirm the support as somebody with actual authority and rolw.

If you can provide some emails from your past purchases or activation mails on the ticket, it might help to speed up the process.
The kind of scam you fell in is pretty common and old.

OP is currently community banned. It means steam already flagged his account as stolen or he was a victim of fraud.

Did the scammer ask you for all the passwords in the 2 step authentication? Im curious how the scam happened exactly.

If you have your complete Steam account data it will be 1000000% returned to you, you must attach data like this:

  1. The first email to register your Steam account
  2. The first time you filled out the steam wallet with what method, if using a credit card, state your credit card number.
  3. Details of your purchases at the Steam store.
  4. To further convince the Steam support team that it is your account, state the game lock code that you activated on your Steam account.

And after you provide as detailed data as possible, you only need 3 - 5 hours to get a reply to your support ticket. My steam account has been hacked 5x and it's back to me

linking or mention of your Steam account means nothing as (unless it's private) you can check out anyone's account and add them with a simple type on the list

No offense but I'm honestly surprised that people fall for this type of scams, the idea of a steam admin contacting an user through an outside chat service instead of valve's own support page smells fishy from a mile away.

Not everyone knows that. People who are not familiar with internet or steam tend to fall for it. I myself got scammed several times in my early internet days.

Don't worry similar thing happened to me in 2013 but in my case it was a free steam game site. long story short make a steam ticket and provide the proofs that steam staff ask like (if u received any gifts provide its e-mail screenshot or the steam keys that you activated on that account) that's it and they will retrieve the account.

Common tactic, here's how I handled it

Scammer - "I’m so sorry for bothering you but I accidentally reported your account to the steam admin for scamming me and duping items instead of someone who impersonated your profile and that impersonator is a scammer who scammed me."

Me - "Sorry you got scammed, I'm not worried"

I strung a scammer along on Facebook. He had access to a friend's account and was messaging me through messenger claiming to have been locked out of his actual account, but still could access messenger. Yeah right. Wasted his time for 30 minutes or more pretending I was trying to be helpful. And I did report the account in the meantime. I was sending him links to help pages haha. But no, I totally didn't see the text on my phone. He wanted me to send him the code. In the end I'm like "what code? Oh THAT code. Yeah no. That's a recovery code for MY account."

You kinda have to assume most things are scams nowadays, especially when someone contacts you out of the blue. I can understand that it can catch people off guard. There's no point shaming him for getting caught. This crap can happen to the smartest person on a very bad day. Maybe they have a lot going on in their life and aren't thinking straight. If no one was getting caught, scammers wouldn't bother scamming.

Just an fyi, having Steam Authenticator won't prevent you from never being scammed again. Just don't click any links, even if its in Steam activity, I lost my account like that once and right after they had access, they disabled Steam Auth.

Glad you got your account back! Steam support is very good at that!
