I've been having a strange experience for a little while now with two different mice (MS IntelliMouse Optical 1.1A and MS Classic IntelliMouse), on two different Windows 10 systems. They both register extra clicks. If I click once, they occasionally/sporadically register two clicks in close succession. (If I have a lot of tabs open, changing tabs sometimes closes the tab immediately after, because the X gets the second click.) If I click and drag to highlight, they occasionally register a click as the button is held down, and it cancels the hold and stops the drag action.

I've tried removing/reinstalling drivers, but it hasn't improved at all. I'm guessing the hardware and/or driver don't debounce the switch input correctly, or something like that. I'm pretty sure one of the mice predates Windows 10, and didn't have these issues before, but I suppose it could also just be its age.

I'm finally tired of it, and willing to spend some money on 1 or 2 new mice, so please let me give me some recommendations.

  • No gaming mice, please-- at least not those with RGB/tons of buttons/janky ergonomics.
  • Probably no more Microsoft mice ever again.
  • I prefer wired over wireless.
  • I'm looking for something affordable, but will consider paying a little extra for quality.

i bought a razer deathadder with my first pc build and haven't found anything else that feels better. i know you said you don't want a gaming mouse due to rgb and extra buttons, but this only has two buttons near the thumb for forward/back, which i think are pretty standard since i've seen them on cheapo non-gaming mice before. they also come handy in some games for keybinds like grenade throw, melee, open map, etc. the rgb is very minimal as well, just the scroll wheel and a razer logo where your palm sits. pretty sure you can disable them in software, i keep mine on white.

there's a $25 "essential" version and a $44 "pro" version - both are wired. from what i can tell there are only two differences between the models, the essential goes up to 6400 dpi, and the pro does 16000 dpi. i have mine set to 2150. imo 16000 dpi is ridiculously sensitive, and even 6400 is overkill.

the pro version has two extra buttons under the scroll wheel. by default they're set to toggle the dpi between five different settings, but you can program them to do literally anything. i set them to change the volume. also, you can change the thumb buttons to whatever you want as well.

based on your post, i'd recommend the $25 essential version.

Surprised no one mentioned this yet, double clicking is usually caused by the mechanical switches in the mouse going bad. The solution is to replace the switches (which requires knowing how to solder), or switching the entire board (which isn't always an option, but sometimes it is and makes it easier!). But if you don't want to fix the mouse and just want a new mouse that will likely never have that issue.. then go with a mouse that uses optical switches. Those are designed so that they won't double click and are much more durable. The problem is, they're more expensive and they've only really started to be the norm since the past couple of years.

I use a Logitech G502 X Plus, which uses optical switches and has RGB. The RGB doesn't matter at all to me, but I got the mouse during a price mistake for $20 which was a steal. There are other options as well, so it's best to research depending on your needs. If you want the most buttons.. the G502 X series of mouse is probably your best bet, but if you want something lighter, there are better options with optical switches. Don't get anything with mechanical switches though, as they will ALL develop double clicking of some kind. It's not an issue of if, it's when. Could be in 6 months, or could be in 6 years. Who knows
