Im looking into buying a controller for pc for racing and platform games.
I'm thinking about just getting a 360 controller for pc as thats the only controller I have had experience with.

What would you folks recommend?

Or is it a good idea to wait for xbox one and ps4 controllers to work for pc ?

All those controllers will eventually be supported on the pc. There is a chance that Sony will even release official drivers for the DS4 but don't bet on it. Even if they don't, someone else will. So just pick your favourite controller whichever it may be. Oh, and you do not mention it, but if you use the DS3 then do not use MotionJoy and use this instead. Then there is also the Steam controller, it seems rather interesting. Perhaps it would be best to wait a little bit.

What is the advantage of using XInput Wrapper instead of MotionJoy?

MotionJoy was the only option for some time but users have had complaints about it since ever. Connecting to some mysterious server, messing up their USB ports or other drivers and lots more. As far as I know there are no such issues with XInput Wrapper but I've not played around with it a lot.

Someone made a working hack for DS4 already here, if anyone's curious.

My friend owns a Logitech F710 and I really liked the feel of it.
The only negative thing I can say about the F710 and the 360 controller is that they both suffer from bad d-pads.
Also some games don't recognize the 360 triggers and d-pad like Final Fantasy 7 for example.

I don't really know of any big name brands controllers specifically made for PC that have a good d-pad though.
I say buy a 360 controller or one of the Logitech PS2-like controllers. They're pretty cheap and can be found for around $10-$15 dollars and once the DS4 and the Xbone controller become compatible with PCs buy those.

Edit: Or get a DualShock 2 with an adapter,

The D-pad doesn't really bother me as I barely use it.
And the DualShock 2 is supported on PC? Thats awesome, not sure if they even sell those things anymore though.

It is supported with an adapter like this one. Cheapest option if you already have a DualShock 2.

If time and money does not matter, you could wait for one of the new controllers, but I guess at this point no-one can guarantee you that they will work with all games.

If you want a controller that works out of the box with most games then I recommend a 360 controller.

If you'd like suggestion about other controllers, I recommend using the search function, because a lot of other users already asked similar questions.

I'd definitely wait for the new controllers. I think you can get them working already, albeit not fully(touchpad, rumble etc.).

what's wrong with the wireless one?

I use the 360 wireless controller with the play and charge kit so you basically get wired as well when the battery is low.

IMO get a XBOX360 controller or a xInput compatible one. Those are more widely supported than Playstation controllers.

I have both a XBOX360 and a PS2 controller here and I end up using the XBOX360 controller more because of compatibility than the PS2 one. Sadly though, because I think the PS2 controller is ergonomically better...

Nice one. Should have known that before I bought the XBOX360 controller ;-)

Obviously a newer x360 controller is better supported than an old PS2 controller :P

PS3 controllers work perfect tho, wired and wireless. But yeah it's better to buy something else because the software you have to install is kinda garbage. No idea when the new Xbox One controllers will release, but I hear good things about those. If you have time: wait till those release (or a steam controller) :P

I think Xbox 360 controller should already be part of every PC gamers' arsenal. Some games are just better with it, like it or not.

I actually looked into this recently. Steam uses xInput to bind keys to the controller, so xbox controllers, as well as a few top brands (someone said Logitech) work out of the box.

But for convenience. I went with the 360 controller, it is plug and play, no addition software required. Easy and well known design.

I have to agree with the general consensus here:
An xbox 360 controller will work for sure: just plug and play without workarounds.
You can wait for the newest line of controllers to get support, but I'd wait until you're sure they are compatible with older games in that case.

Alternatively, anything Xinput should work with all current games. And there are indeed programs out there to map other controllers to Xinput (but I personally don't like having to use a 3rd party program to properly use my controller)
