You surely heard about Ubisoft pulling the plug on The Crew and talking about getting comfotable with not owning your games. the Youtuber Accursed Farms / Ross Scott started a campaign to get goverment attention about this issue with game/license ownership.

Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w70Xc9CStoE
Website: https://www.stopkillinggames.com/

i highly recommend to watch the video and/or visit the website.
here is a short summary:

  • The Crew was a single purchase game that was never offered as a subscription service, technically they took the money and left their customers with a defunct product
  • The goal is to keep the games in a functional state even when the publishers or affiliated parties decide they dont care about the game anymore (like giving the possibility to host private server, patch the game to work offline)
  • Ubisoft is a french company and the french are known for their high consumer protection laws. that said many countries outside of the US dont even have rulings on some video game practices or aren't even aware of this (this sadly also applies to France)
  • Games that are only planned for a period of times will never tell you this anywhere on the boxcopy or the storefront

My goal is to try to raise awareness on this campaign and try to help out to reach the goverment petition goals. this isn't just about Ubisoft or The Crew but this shutdown might be the best opportunity to raise awareness and make rules for the entire industry.

It pleases me to see the second thread crop up dealing with this fuckery already. Keep them coming!

They have been trying to get a movie off the ground since before COVID so you never know. Maybe this one will be spared the axe... unless they release The Division 3 of course. That was the only real problem they had with The Crew: they had released Motorfest and it was not performing very well and on the other hand you had this older game still with a vibrant active community... they had to kill it.

Yes there's new division game but it will be free to play. Personally i played both 1 and 2. Division 1 is more optimised and more smoother than 2.
