My favorite of the old games was the Viking Invasion expansion, and Napoleon of the newer games.
But the greatest Expansion of all time was Medieval II Kingdoms - which added 4 whole scenarios as big as the base game. Best value for money ever.

Edit: and the worst campaign, in my experience, is Alexander.

intentional omission. The poll also skips Three Kingdoms and Saga, because it's limited to 20 options

To tell the truth I remember I played some Total War games when I was younger but never got too deep in them but right now I have Total War: WARHAMMER and I need Total War: WARHAMMER II and also Three Kingdoms and Saga :P So propably I would vote for Total War: WARHAMMER.

Seems silly to include unpopular TW games and even campaign packs but to pass on some of the most popular games.

I skipped Warhammer because I consider it a separate thing (no matter how awesome).
I wanted to include Britannica and Three Kingdoms, but was limited to 20 entries. Also, people always have an inherent bias against the newest entries - either favorably because it's new and shiny, or negatively because of the changes.

The only one I've played to any extent is Medieval Total War Gold (a friend recommended it highly, and disliked Medieval 2. I trust his taste, as we like the same stuff, so i haven't tried M:TW2 yet)

Also, thanks for this timeline!

The first two games, the overland map feels much more like a boardgame (especially Risk). Starting with Rome, they changed the overland map to be more dynamic, and started developing more complex technology trees. From there on in, the tighter-focused campaigns (Rome, Napoleon, Shogun II, and some of the Rome II DLC) are much better, whereas the more sprawling campaigns (Empire, Rome II, Attila) are more of a mess.

Warhammer was a breath of fresh air, bringing in a lot of new mechanics and ideas, which were then introduced into Britannia and Three Kingdoms but I can't comment as I haven't played those yet

I never could get into the Total War series. After spending 5-10 minutes in one of those battles I forget what I was doing on the strategic level. I do better with games like Civilization or Paradox games where all the combat is abstract and simplified.

you could auto-win the battles. I do that in most Total War games.

"auto-win", LOL
I still remember one my playthrough, when auto-play resulted in defeat (repeatedly), and playing the same battle myself I got a heroic victory

Always a pleasure to play a NTW campaign with LME mod. Can't say enough thank you to those modders who made the game (and the others) even better.
I also liked Empire but for me Napoleon is better. My last TW game was Shogun II, you know when the serie became more Total KIT War.

Total War's an interesting franchise for sure. I personally love Rome 1 for the campaign management and Shogun 2 or Rome 2 for the battles themselves. I definitely do think that the strategic complexity of the campaign map itself has been extremely dumbed down and become unbearably boring with anything after Medieval 2. With economy management becoming even more basic, no stack splits, no reinforcement, no populations, no culture, no historical effects like slavery vs. population and no population happiness management. It's now just a "click this for money or click this for alternate bonus" type of management.
Not saying Rome 1 was complex, but it was definitely more complex than what it is now.

Haven't played anything after Rome 2 though, so hopefully it's gotten better.

I prefer the campaign management part of the game, which is why I couldn't get into Empire or Shogun II, and why Rome II got boring after a while Rome II is definitely too big

On the other hand, Napoleon's almost disregard for campaign management forced/pulled me in to the battles, and I thoroughly enjoyed that game

Favourite is by far Warhammer (not played Warhammer 2 yet). The reason for that is simple, Total War has always had a really lackluster AI. The AI ended up being really predictable, and that made the games feel repetitive. Warhammer has much greater unit variety that things feel more varied, so the AI issue does not cause the game to feel as repetitive.

IMO, Rome II's biggest problem was its size and scope. The smaller campaigns are tighter, and that makes them a much more enjoyable experience

With 50-60 provinces, for me the game becomes boring on the management aspect; on that point of view, Rise of Rome or Anibal at gates have more fun. But at the long term the big campaign have battles more interesting to me because the armies are more balanced.

In that aspect, Empire never gives me balanced battles in campaign (AI always comes with surreal combinations of artillery and elite troops), but I get fun thinking the action in three diferent theatres, without chances of get fast support on any there, is a nice challenge.

Loved Rome, and really enjoyed Attila. I know it wasn't popular but it was quite satisfying to finish the Western Roman Empire campaign :D

Definitely enjoyed medieval 2 the most. Probably also played it the most but i wouldnt know, seeing as i had it on physical disc rather than steam.

it also had the greatest expansion pack in history. Kingdoms added 4 campaigns that, though not quite as good, were as big in scope
