Just started watching Haikyuu over the weekend on a whim, ended up marathoning the entire series (that S4.15 animation though). After watching all these suspense thrillers, political dramas, tragedies, and what not, Haikyuu comes off as a breath of fresh air! It's got a great wholesome cast that will make you laugh your ball off, and the emphasis on literally all the characters gives it such a great sense of fulfillment (that Tsukki moment was oh so good!). But so did a lot of other animes before Haikyuu. So what makes Haikyuu so special (at least for me)? I tried to look back at some of the iconic moments in the series and Bokuto's speech to Tsukki easily stood out for me. There was such a sense of power in that scene, and that power was multiplied ten folds by that backing soundtrack! Then it hit me. Unbeknownst within all that story and drama, the soundtrack was one of the best parts of the series. Yuki Hayashi, take a bow. He might be the best composer in the anime industry right now.

Speaking of Hayashi, he also did My Hero Academia. That's two of my favorite anime soundtracks right there. And that brings me to the topic of this discussion. What anime soundtracks gave you the feels? I've been wanting to make a playlist of the best soundtracks, so hit me with the best you guys have got!

I have the 'cassette mix' from k-on! on my ipod, i listen to it ALL the time. I also really like Tsumugi's solo album.

And almost every song from LL! and LLS! are just the best.

It's been a while since I watched animes and I don't usually have a favorite something in any subject, but I remember some OSTs I really enjoyed:

  • Persona 4 The Animation's "Ying-Yang"
  • Darker Than Black's 1st opening (don't remember its name)
  • Attack On Titan's "Guren No Yumia"
  • Bleach's "Treachery", "Save The One, Save The All" and "Cometh The Hour"
  • Devil May Cry's anime opening (not sure if it has a name)
  • Final Fantasy VII Advent Children's version of "One-Winged Angel"
  • Madoka Magica Rebellion Story's "Absolute Configuration"
  • Naruto's "Girei"
  • Steins;Gate's anime's "Skyclad no Kansokusha"
  • RWBY's "Caffeine", "I May Fall", "Time To Say Goodbye", "Red Like Roses" and "When It Falls"

There might be more OSTs I enjoyed in animes, but it's really been a while since I last watched animes

Color me surprised that I've heard most of them. Haven't seen Darker than Black yet, so can't say much without listening. Rest are pretty great selection though! Thanks for reminding me of DMC though! Put it on my MAL and completely forgot about it. Although not from the anime, Devils Never Cry is one of my fav!

Haven't seen the series yet, so based on the shadow underneath ahem (or lack thereof), is the rightmost person a guy or a girl?

Space Battleship Yamato for the win. I find myself returning to Kiseijuu ost from time to time as well.

Oh yes!! Space Battleship Yamato is soo good! So well orchestrated <3
Parasyte is very situational. It fits the overall tone very well. Like those choices ;)

Dang you shuvam! You just sent me down anime music videos watching spree with this topic! And what's worse, it's very enjoyable!
New contenders I forgot to include earlier - mostly openings instead of full-blown soundtracks: basically all Durarara openings, Baccano! - both its opening and its theme, and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki kun opening.

Beautiful tracks! Liked Akane Sasu particularly. The accent sounds so western. Loved all of their arrangements! Thanks for the recommendations :)

Soundtrack? One Punch Man. Just try to skip that opening of season 1. You cannot.
Also very fond of Overlord, in particular the openings which just kept getting better every season.

But if by "gave you the feels" you mean something on the more somber or melancholic side, Fruits Basket (past and present reboot) is always a surefire way to give feels. Oh and that first Bleach movie, something about Into the Fire just gets me. And Gundam Seed... yep.

For something between the above epic and the feels, I guess Ao no Exorcist would do it for me. As much as I hate the direction the anime took, the OST is nothing to scoff at.

Also Tiger & Bunny, they just get the mix between super serious and comedic just right. Even in the soundtrack XD

Okay and, hear me out here, but Naruto Shippuuden has some great tracks. Moreso the in-anime themes than the OPs and EDs, but there's some good stuff in those too. Some of the themes, like the Akatsuki one, are in the top most played of my tracks haha.

I think about 80% of my music library is anime and game OSTs so it's kinda hard picking favourites if I'm completely honest.

also why is it that some one-shot OVAs of culture have cool soundtracks sometimes, it's not faaaair

But uuuh... if you want a list of composers, sorry, I'm just about as bad listing those as I am with matching songs to song artists, lol.

Love OPM themes as well. Mumen Rider's theme is so hype! Love the battle theme as well. Speaking of One, might I recommend the ending theme of Mob Psycho 100: https://youtu.be/BvKvO_irnik. Such a perfect track for Reigen's realization.

Never watched Overlord. Something about the isekai genre just turns me off. Quite a lot of recommendations though! Gonna give them all a listen. Just in the mod right now :)

I get that Isekai is kinda so overdone that even parodies of the Isekai genre are getting parodized, lol. Overlord is more like if you had to play D&D with yourself because your friends no longer had the time, so you might as well turn it into a book. Which, hey, is almost exactly what happened, lol.

Choose your isekai wisely, or Truck-kun will come for you!

No, I really like this personal tune, it perfectly fastens whole soundtrack and the movie. One of the reasons the movie is better than ova series even if the latter is longer and got more details inside.

It's disgraceful to have such a unique series butchered so hard. It's not like Japan doesn't have enough animators, and yet they chose the easy way out with cheap cg.

Carole & Tuesday has such a beautiful soundtrack and you chose that. I love it :p

Does the question also include OPs and EDs?

If not:
Tokyo Ghoul - Licht und Schatten
Hero Academia - You Say Run

Bungou Stray Dogs Dead Apple - The Door is also pretty nice imo, but way too short.

Nothing is excluded per se. Even Tanjiro's BOOM counts :p

Love all those you mentioned! I was addicted to You Say Run for quite some time. Still get back to it from time to time! PLUS ULTRA!!

Two specific OSTs i can remember off the top of my head from recent stuff:
Kaado tanjiro from demon slayer ep 19
Isabella's Lullaby from the Promised Neverland

I think they both complement their specific scenes very well. I especially love the latter and how it manages to paint the melancholic mood the story is setting.

Elfen lied - Lilium

Parasyte - Next to you

These two will always hold something special in me. If we're talking about ED/OP then it's plastic memories - ring of fortune and asayake no starmine, especially the latter after watching the whole season

I'd like to contribute some soundtracks that hasn't been brought up yet:

  • Steins;Gate has some pretty unforgettable OPs Example
  • Kimetsu No Yaiba has a pretty good orchestral OST and OP as well e.g. Zenitsu's Theme
  • Kaguya-sama Love is War: aside from the usual Mister, Daddy OPs it has a pretty high quality OST for a romcom as well Example_1 Example_2

Some older animes:
