Bought a copy of it using TF2 keys. Impulse buying.

Never had any experience with any Guild Wars games. I know the game is old, but it will run fine on my laptop.

What are your opinions on the game?

I've played it for about 2,500 hours. It was amazing for its time, but it's really dated. I cannot recommend it to new players unfortunately. It's pretty much dead too, making harder areas near impossible to beat I believe, NPC support or not.

I just realized. I was probably playing in hard-mode "back then". Normal mode might very well be OK without help.

It sounds like they intend to keep the servers going for a long while. Do you think playing with a single friend would make the content doable? (or at least enjoyable).

Yes, Guild Wars 1 was made for co-op. I was thinking of Hard Mode which renders some story missions seriously infuriating hard. :)

What about solo?

Got no friends here. :(

Like I said, I have absolutely no experience in the game. Still downloading.

I'll add you, if you don't mind, and I'll let you know when I start playing.

Thanks for the heads up.

All story missions are doable solo even in hard mode. A friend can just make things a bit easier.

Every missions in hard mode are soloable just get some heroes from EOTN and research some build and you will be fine and sometimes you will need to plan the placement of your heroes to make sure they will be safe from harm.

The only time you really need group are the end game dungeons like Underworld.

Fun thing about the game is its skill system where you can have a lot of variety with your character. If you have Factions, definitely give Ritualist a try.

I'm in the same boat. Am interested, and this is the first time I've seen it on sale. Still a bit pricey though. It looks like Eye of the North is highly recommended along with the trilogy since it offers game play improvements and also lets you collect things that carry over into GW2.

It's one of my favourite games. Some of the hard mode missions may be a bit difficult to complete without other players - especially if you're aiming for the bonus - but they aren't impossible, as long as you know what you're doing with your heroes. I'd recommend starting in Nightfall, since that's going to make things much easier for you to manage. ^_^

Thanks for the valuable advice!

I hope this game will get me into more fantasy and rpg games.

I hope you will enjoy it!

The official wiki is deadly useful by the way. It contains everything - and I mean everything - you may be curious about. You may also want to pick up a storybook early on since the rewards are really nice and most newbies overlook them~.

I'd buy it, if I had a chance.

Well GW-GOTY contains only the base game without any of the expansions and its pretty much doable solo though it matters what class you gonna pick(personally I would go for range class).

I was thinking about buying it but then I went and read on few forums that game is pretty much dead that everyone went to GW2. So yeah if you are buying it keep that in mind guys.

I want to get it...I'm just worried that if there's virtually no one online that I'll get stuck at some point and be unable to finish the main story stuff.

It was really a great game, but it's pretty much dead now as it's already been said, and even with your heroes some things will be impossible (both Underworlds, elite zones like the Deep and Urgoz if you're planning to play Factions or Mallyx for Nightfall, dungeons like Duncan for Eye of the North...), not to mention the PvP which may not be as full as it was (didn't try since a long time)

This being said, if you have like 2 or 3 friends to play with, it's still very enjoyable even with the outdated graphics. The lore is awesome, and well, after like 8k hours on the game, I won't tell you it's a bad one xD

Oh, 8k hours of Guild Wars...GOOD JOB! And also, outdated graphics... I really enjoy it! Graphics are really nice and it's the only game I can run on ultra with no lag :D

That was long ago... and I wanted my ranks... ^^ And yeah, graphics are kind of outdated, like not much reflections on water, static lights, no day/night cycle, the kind of things everyone wants nowadays... That doesn't mean it's not pretty, it definately is (OMG the pre-Ascalon zones ! How I loved those ones...), it's only not dynamic... plus you CAN'T JUMP ! How many times I raged over this... But the fact that every zone you enter is only for the group makes is playable even on old computers (which was the aim of GW from the start) without any lag at all, and it's highly appreciable compared to, for example, playing World vs World on GWĀ² and crying over the lag...

Guild Wars was my first MMO and it was fantastic back then!
If you can't find other players you may set up a party of NPCs: basically you can solo the game in normal mode. No monthly subscription required.
Highly recommended!

It's a very nice game, but it's basically an online single-player affair now.

It has been since the introduction of heroes to replace NPCs... only elite zones can't be done with them, and as I'm saying this I'm not even sure people didn't find ways to do those zones with heroes too...

Well, yes, that too, but what I meant was that the game is practically dead. Even major hub towns are empty. Which you already said, I now realized.

Oh yeah, well you can be sure the game is empty if no one even trash-talks at Kamadan during at least 10 minutes...

I have played the hell out of it many years ago, and I still reccomend it. I think it's a good game worth mainly if you are going to play it with friends, as it's not a proper MMORPG, it fits better as a Co-op game. You can play it solo too but with at least a friend it should be less boring. The game feels dated from graphics but the gameplay and general design outmatches many recent games, imho.

Had this gem back in the day. We moved and for some reason I lost all my log in credentials (my fault not theirs) Saw this on sale yesterday and picked a copy up for me and picked one up for my son. Loved the game back in the day started from scratch last night and it still is as fun as I remember
