Although I agree with your sentiment, I didn't mean it to be taken in that kind of way, just a silly poll xD

Holiday - haligdæg
from halig "holy" + dæg "day"
Holiday is far more religious than Merry Christmas

I usually wish people both merry Christmas and happy holidays. That way I don't have to choose between those two :)

Merry Christmas. A holiday is just any special day off. Besides, there is a Christ in Christmas for a reason. Even if you aren't a Christian or don't celebrate it, you can at least come up with a more creative name.

+1. The only time I would refrain from saying Merry Christmas is if you know the person doesn't celebrate Christmas or if you know they would take offense at it. Generally though even if you're not a christian I don't think most people would take offense at you telling them to have a Merry Christmas (at least in the US where it is a longstanding holiday both secularly and religiously).

I prefer Happy Holidays, but use both sometimes.

It really doesn't matter, and the "war on christmas" stuff is a complete non-issue. The phrase happy holidays has been around forever and nearly everything we do for the holiday, except the manger scene, was appropriated long before Christianity even existed on an organized basis. Legally speaking, the courts of the United States have (repeatedly) ruled that Christmas is a secular holiday when the issue was brought up. I'm really perplexed as to how some people can get offended at someone else's exercise of religious liberty.

I use Happy Holidays due to many years of retail brainwashing.
